Lancashire / THORNBER. THOMBER, STARKIE, STARKEY
« on: Saturday 27 June 09 07:06 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find a marriage for Martha Thornber/Thomber, b. 1759 Gisburn and Edmund Starkie/Starkey.

Martha is believed to be the daughter of John Thornber who lived at Hill Top, Barnoldswick when he died 1782 (b. 1711 Gisburn).  Martha had an illegitimate son, Joseph Bracewell, at Hill Top in 1781.  I believe that this son is the same as:

Burial – Gisburn
Jos Thornber of Watters, Nr Austwick – 27 Jul 1792

Between 1791 and 1793 Edmund and Martha Starkie/Starkey are living at Waters Farm, Austwick, but I have never been able to find a marriage or if this was     the first marriage for either of them.

I am also trying to find the deaths of Martha and Edmund, last heard of living at Nether Gale Farm in Tunstall in 1807 and in 1814 Edmund gave consent to his daughter's marriage at Warton (Carnforth) in 1814.  I haven't been able to find any sign of them after that, or where they were living in 1814.  There is no record of them dying at Tunstall or around.

I have listed this on the West Rising list as well as I am not sure where the event might have taken place:

Lancashire / Too Many Birth Records!
« on: Wednesday 11 February 09 13:32 GMT (UK)  »
Hi – I have a question that has been bothering me.  I was searching the newly extended searchable Birth records on Ancestry (1916-2007).

I should explain that at the time of my birth and my brothers birth - our mother was totally separated and divorced from her first husband.  The father of my brother and myself was.......

I find the following certificates all the correct mother and places:

My brother registered as:

Why registered so many times and the changing of names?

The other strange thing is that one of the records for myself and one for my brother won’t allow the image to be opened in Ancestry.cu.uk but refers to Ancestry.com which  I am not subscribed to so can’t open them.

I haven’t yet looked to see how many registrations were made for my other 6 siblings and 2 half siblings!!   Can anyone explain these anomalies?

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Bailey Street
« on: Sunday 04 January 09 12:08 GMT (UK)  »
I wonder if SLS has a copy of an old photo or picture of Bailey Street, Sheffield.  I know it was and is near the very centre of Sheffield and have found accounts of what life was like around the area, and recent photos - but would love to see an old picture of Bailey Street, Jackie

Lancashire / Velvet Walks
« on: Saturday 03 January 09 14:46 GMT (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone has any info or photos of Velvet Walks, Bolton.  I have ancestors who moved there from Ireland,  They were tailors and on the 1851 census it seems that most people on Velvet Walks were tailors.  Would they trade from their homes or have market stalls - or work at home or elsewhere for someone else?  Velvet Walks sounds lovely but I gather they were slums.  Jackie

Lancashire / LATIN TRANSLATION
« on: Saturday 06 December 08 13:03 GMT (UK)  »
Hi    can anyone translate this little phrase.  It is in a 1704 Baptism:

Margreta d. Aehidij Batty de Collingholm, Tunstall Par.  Quodam de Nethergale.

There are several other baptisms within 10-15 year of this for ofspring of Aegidij Batty but all just say de Collingholm, Tunstall Parish.  Its the last bit 'quodam de Nethergale' that I need - here's hoping - Jackie
