Hi
This is a photo from a box of stuff of my parents.
I have absolutely no idea who the people in the picture are.
Would anyone like to guess the roundabout date it would have been taken and/or judge the approx ages of the sitters?
The reverse of the photo is printed so that it could be sent as a postcard but is otherwise blank.
This made me think it was a studio photograph but the quality is really not that good!
Do the clothes give any idea of status or  geographical location ?
I'm pretty sure it must have been taken in the UK.
Any ideas welcome
Thanks

Family History Programs, Tree Organisation, Presentation / Legacy Software Version 9
« on: Thursday 18 January 24 18:55 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
I'm owning up here to still being a User of Legacy software for my family history...
I've tried numerous free trials of other software but somehow nothing really fits.
A force of habit thing I suppose....

I know Legacy is pretty much of a disaster on the visual front but I'll ignore that for its clarity of outlay. The only thing that I really  don't like is with its fiddliness with photos.
The blurb on the latest (and that's already old!) Legacy 9 Deluxe is that photos can now be added with Drag and Drop.
I'd like to know if that does work with edition 9 and if it really is that  easy.
It also promises a Cloud backup....anyone any experience of this?
Grateful for any user comments!

Scotland / Missing Scotsmen ...where to look now?
« on: Thursday 11 January 24 15:32 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there,
Using the site Scotlandspeople, I can trace my ancestor Hugh Knox Pollock back to his baptism in 1814 in Scotland.

Through this, I have the names of his parents (Walter Pollock and Isabell Knox...Isabel with various spellings) and a number of siblings, all in the parish of Houston and Killellan.

Walter Wilson   Pollock b 1807
Margaret                     b 1812
Isabell                         b 1819
John                           b 1821

I  can find neither a marriage nor the deaths for the parents.

Son Walter Wilson marrries Janet McCallum in 1831 with occ sailor but that's all I have.
He is NOT the Walter who is later a gamekeeper ...I've checked the death cert, wrong father.

As to my Hugh, he marries in 1837 in Liverpool  and is a stoker (fireman) in the merchant navy. I can't find him on a census until 1871 in Southampton Workhouse, after his wife has died.
The age in 1871/81/91 is consistent but 10 years too old but as he was lsited as a No 3 (Idiot or Imbecile) I suspect this is understandable. He dies, still in the Workhouse, in 1897.

I've had no luck with the other children.
Where else can I look for the parents and brother Walter?
Any ideas please?

The Lighter Side / Christmas Day 2012
« on: Friday 20 October 23 12:11 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I'd never noticed this little snippet of info before at the bottom of the Rootschat landing page :
"Most Online Ever: 3,256 (Tuesday 25 December 12 20:30 GMT (UK) ) "

Christmas Day and nothing on the telly or what ?!

Perhaps we should try and beat that record this year!

The Common Room / Death Certificate...no cause of death ?
« on: Friday 29 September 23 18:36 BST (UK)  »
Hi
As the GRO has reduced its prices, I have in the last couple of weeks ordered several death certificates. They have been much more useful than I thought!
A "lost" relative who registers the death, in the case of a woman her deceased
husband's name and his occupation, addresses and the like.
But yesterday I received a certificate from 1844 where the cause of death was just left blank. That was the first time I had seen that.
The chap in question was 73.
If no one actually knew the cause, the least I would have expected is "Senile Decay" as a sort of alibi answer.
Has anyone else experienced similar?

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Barebones....Barnsley St John.....Burials
« on: Tuesday 26 September 23 19:01 BST (UK)  »
Hi there
A family group of mine were listed in 1851 as living in "Barebones"
This area seems to have been in Barnsley St John.
St John is not covered by Ancestrys WRY parish record collection ( I must admit, I've only just realised this)
I have several deaths in this 1851 period and I can*t find burial records for any.
Any idea where to access ?
Thanks for any pointers

The Common Room / Family Trees at Ancestry
« on: Monday 11 September 23 11:04 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I was wondering :
When searching Family Trees at Ancestry, how are the results displayed?
Are the trees listed according to the date they were created/uploaded?
I can't see an alphabetical connection to the User name and it doesn't appear to have anything to do with the amount of individuals listed.
Or is it completely random ?

For some names, there are just too many hits to work through! And some trees are just plain copies. Is there anyway of telling which tree would have been the original?

Thanks
Rebel
