Kent / SIMMONS: Woolwich & Plumstead.
« on: Sunday 17 June 12 19:09 BST (UK)  »
Hello

I'm hoping that some kind soul(s) might be able to help me with the following brothers:

Ernest Albert SIMMONS born Jan-March 1894 Woolwich
Herbert Charles SIMMONS born April-June 1895 Woolwich.

I have found them on the census returns, (including the 1911):
Ernest Albert Simmons is age 17 - Barber's Assistant.  Born Woolwich.
Herbert Charles Simmons is age 15 - Govt. Bookeeper, Ryl Arsenal. Born Woolwich.

I have been trying to find out if either of them ever married and had children.  I may be doing something wrong, but I'm unable to find any leads.

Would greatly appreciate any help/advice.  Many thanks.
Lesley.

Europe / Unusual Greek/Cypriot Surname.

Hello There,

I am wondering if anyone would be able to help me with a surname dilemma?  The surname being:  SOURKOUNOUDES... and what the possible variants might be?  It may even be a misspelling, so, as you can see, it really is a 'dilemma', with not much to go on.  I'd greatly appreciate any help/advice you may be able to offer.

Many thanks in advance,

United States of America / Border Crossings Canada-USA
« on: Thursday 12 January 12 15:09 GMT (UK)  »
Hello & Warm Greetings,

I was wondering whether anyone had access to the Border Crossings from Canada to the USA.  I'm looking for information concerning the following ancestor:

Name:  James Demetrias Carteris Karteris
Born:  Greece
Arrived:  St. Albans, Vermont, USA.

I'm looking for a year and (hopefully) a date, and any other info would be a real bonus.  I'd be so very grateful for any help at all that's 'out there'.

Many thanks in advance,

LAS1015

Hello All,

I was wondering if anyone could possibly help me re: the late Demetrious Sourkounoudes born c. 1916.  Unsure of the correct spelling of either his first or last surname.  He anglicised his first name to 'Jimmy' and was, for a short while in the hotel business in Nicosia.  Any information, however small, concerning him or his family name would be most appreciated.

Many thanks,

Australia / Thomas 'Cannum' BALL - Emigrated 1837 on 'Lady Emma'
« on: Thursday 22 September 11 20:37 BST (UK)  »
Hello All,

Well, as the subject heading says ... I'm looking for any information concerning my 5 x great grandfather Thomas 'Cannum' Ball born in Kent, UK approx 1781.  He died 1866 at Woodside, South Australia.

I am descended from his son Amos Ball born 1814 in Kent - he died in 1836 at the age of just 22.  He married Sarah Gurr on Christmas Day 1835 at Frindsbury, Kent.  Luckily for me, Sarah was pregant at the time of their marriage ... their son Henry Ball was born 1st May 1836 ... five months later Amos Ball was dead.

Thomas 'Cannum' Ball emigrated to Australia on 4th December 1837 aboard the ship 'Lady Emma', along with his wife Elizabeth and other children.

I'd really love to know what became of my Australian family & descendants, (my cousins!) ... any help would be so very gratefully appreciated  :)  Many, many thanks,
Lesley

Kent / Amos Ball died 1836 Sittingbourne.
« on: Thursday 15 September 11 19:19 BST (UK)  »
Hello All,

I'm almost sure that the following person is my 4 x great grandfather:

Amos Ball buried 13 October 1836 at Sittingbourne.  Because of the date I am unable to obtain a death certificate and am therefore 'stuck' :(  I found this date on the updated 'Family Search'.

I'm sure he was the Amos Ball who married my 4 x great grandmother Sarah Gurr on 25 December 1835 at Frindsbury.  Sarah was pregnant with my 3 x great grandfather Henry Ball (bapt. 1 May 1836 at Frindsbury) ... little Henry was only 5 months old when his father Amos Ball died.

Sarah married her second husband, Charles Stevens on 20 August 1838.  Charles raised Henry as his own child.

I cannot find a birth record for Amos Ball - he is one of my brick walls.  I can only assume that he was quite young when he died ... maybe the result of an accident at work - very frustrating.  Would really, really appreciate any advice at all as to where to look next.  Thank you for taking time to read this - I hope it makes some kind of sense!

Lesley.

Warwickshire / Vampyre Photographic Rooms Unett Street.
« on: Friday 05 March 10 20:07 GMT (UK)  »
Hello All,

I was wondering if anybody would have any information re:  The Vampyre Photographic Rooms, Unett Street, Birmingham.  The photographer/operator was a J. WINKLES who took daguerreotype photographs during the period of 1845-1855.  Perhaps he appeared in a Trade Directory during this time.  I'd be so grateful for any help or information.  Many thanks.

Kent Completed Lookup Requests / Thomas Brown born Deal.
« on: Thursday 22 October 09 11:23 BST (UK)  »
Hello All,

I was wondering if some kind soul could help me with the following:

Thomas BROWN born c 1807 Deal, Kent.  He and his wife Elizabeth born c 1802 Strood (sadly no surname for her) :(  are my gt, gt, gt, gt, grandparents.

In 1851 they were living in Crayford with their children:
Phillis BROWN b 1830 Cuxton
Charles BROWN b 1835 Strood
Richard BROWN b 1837 Strood
John BROWN b 1839 Frindsbury
Emma BROWN b 1846 Crayford
Charlotte BROWN (granddaughter) b 1849 Crayford.

In 1861 Thomas & Elizabeth Brown are living at Challis[?] or Hill[?] Grove, Kent.  By 1871 they are living with their son John & his family at 20 George Place, Woolwich.

For some reason I am unable to find  Thomas & Elizabeth Brown on the 1841 census.  Also I'd really love to find out what Elizabeth Brown's maiden name was - I need to find their marriage - would any kind and wonderful person be able to help with this?

Many thanks for taking the time to read this!

Lesley
