Herefordshire Lookup Requests / William Carpenter b Hereford c1811
« on: Saturday 26 April 08 15:56 BST (UK)  »
My gt gt grandfather Willian Carpenter, who married, worked as an exciseman and died in Welshpool, Montgomeryshire, Wales, was born in Hereford in 1810 0r 1811, if the age given on the 1851 census is reliable. On his marriage certificate he states that his father was "William Carpenter, Schoolmaster".

On the 1841 and 1851 censuses there is a William Carpenter (1772-1858) who was a schoolmaster at the Blue Coat School, as were his sons Thomas and Robert Hobart. The IGI list 8 christenings between 1797 and 1809 for William Carpenter and his wife Mary, the first two at St John Baptist and the rest at All Saints, but my William is on the list. Neither is Emma who is living with William and Mary in 1841, aged 25 according to the census meaning she was born between 1811 and 1816, presumably another daughter.

There is a christening on the IGI for a William Carpenter in Hereford, 29 November 1812, but the parents are John and Susannah Carpenter

Is there anyone out there who has any further information about my William Carpenter's birth or any other information regarding the Carpenter family and their work at the Blue Coat School? Or could anyone willing to do look-ups in Hereford put me on their list?

One more thing worthy of note is that another son of William Carpenter Snr, James, named one of his daughters Olivia Tyrconnell Carpenter, which is interesting when you realise that the title of Earl of Tyrconnell was held between 1723 and 1812 by three successive George Carpenters. This could indicate a remote link between the humble schoolmasters of Blue Coat School and the Carpenters, Earls of Tyconnell, or, as is more likely, is a case of wishful thinking by James Carpenter, who, in 1841, gave  his occupation as "Writer", only to end up in 1881 as the more respectable-sounding "Clerk to Commissioner of Taxes".

Is there anyone who can elucidate?

Am I right in thinking that most Chiswick/Isleworth/Brentford birth have not been added to the IGI?

I have been trying to trace the birth of a John House which took place in Chiswick or Isleworth probably between 1770 and 1780.

"John House of the Surrey Cavalry of Chiswick" married a Grace Hill or Heal in Barnstaple in 1797 and their first child, Elizabeth, was christened in Barnstaple in 1798. John appears to have been demobbed there and the couple were subsequently mentioned in a North Devon settlement examination:

"John House of the Surry Cavalry, born in Ilesworth(sic) Middlesex; lately married to Grace Hill of Barnstaple May 1797"

I haven't been able to examine the details of this settlement examination, so the next thing I know know about the couple is from the IGI which shows they had a further 5 children between 1803 and 1814, but all of these were christened in Mortlake, Surrey, just across the river from Chiswick and Isleworth.

By 1841 Grace is a widow and working a servant in the household of George Hood, surgeon, in Mortlake. There is also an undated miniature of her belonging to a descendant
of hers living in Canada, of which I have a scanned copy. In 1851 she is in the almshouse at East Sheen (Mortlake) and she dies in 1855.

There is no record of a birth of a John House in Mortlake or Barnes, so I am given to believe that the sources stating that he was born in Chiswick or Isleworth are correct. Yet I can find no mention of Chiswick on the IGI or Hugh Wallis and the latter gives data for Isleworth only appears for the period 1813-1852. As to the year of John's birth, his wife was born in 1777, so he is likely to be of a similar age or slightly older, and so I should say between 1770 and 1780.

I live in Sardinia so I can't go bombing around West London looking up parish registers at the moment. Could anyone who has access to them please do me a favour and see if they can find a birth for my gt gt gt grandfather John House?

Berkshire Lookup Requests / Anyone going to Berks RO - Pain in Winkfield
« on: Sunday 20 April 08 18:21 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone in Berkshire help me with my research?

I can trace my Pain ancestry back to Joseph Pain, wheelwright, his wife and Mary of Priest's Bridge, Mortlake, Surrey. They are recorded on the IGI as parents of Thomas Pain, my great great grandfather, christened in 1807, George (1816) and William (1818), all in Mortlake St Mary. Joseph died in 1839 before censuses began and there is no record of his being born in Mortlake. If the age given on his death certificate is correct he was born in 1769 0r 1770 but goodness knows where: there are several Joseph Pain born around that time and around the country but none seem to fit the bill.

His wife, Mary, who died at the age of about 95 in 1873, consistently gives her birthplace as Winkfield (usually recorded as Wingfield), Berks, on censuses 1851-71. Her year of birth is 1778 or thereabouts. On the IGI there are no Marys born in or around 1778 in Winkfield except for Mary Boyce who was apparently the daughter of George Boyce, vicar of Winkfield, and who and was still around in Winkfield in 1841, a spinster living with her brother Thomas.

My first request would therefore be, if anyone has access to other birth records for Winkfield, for any other Marys born around 1778 in Winkfield.

Secondly, for reasons too long to explain here, I believe Joseph and Mary had a daughter Elizabeth, who states on the 1851 Welsh census that she was born in Wingfield (sic), Berks. My second request is therefore if there is any record of a birth or christening of a Elizabeth Pain/Paine/Payne in Winkfield or thereabouts between, let's say 1799 and 1804.

Thirdly, seeing as their (possibly) youngest child was born in Winkfield, it would be convenient to be able to find a marriage in the area for a Joseph Pain to a Mary around the turn of the century and at least before 1807 when I know they were in Mortlake.

Regards,

Chris Pain in Sardinia
