United States of America / Searching for Gordon in Mass?
« on: Tuesday 23 September 08 22:35 BST (UK)  »
I have reason to believe that my late husband`s half-brother may have emigrated to the USA
date unknown, perhaps he was taken there by his mother as a child, or went when he was an adult.

His name is GORDON GRAHAM STUART STRINGER, born Jan 1918 in Brightlingsea Essex, mother was   Blanche Stringer nee Fraser
I would love to find him or ,  his family if any, to discuss details about his mother Blanche.

I doubt if he knew he had a half-brother, my husband never knew about him.

Please please if you know about him or know anyone who knows him, please help, I would be so grateful for any information Possible he was last in Massachuttes, his name is mentioned as being there  on Ancestry. I have access to Ancestry UK, but the full information would have been on the World section, which I do not have (not able to afford that unfortunateyl, being an OAP)

Thank you in advance for any help offered, I wait in hope.

US Lookup Requests / Help needed please
« on: Tuesday 23 September 08 11:57 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help please with this query.

Somewhere in Massachuttes, there may be the person I am searching for.
His name appears in the Mass.City Directory, and if the correct person, he is the half-brother of my late husband, which I very much doubt he knows about. I found it on Ancestry, just giving that detail but unfortunately no address or any business it may have been connected with.

So if someone in Massachuttes could vey kindly look up that detail for me, and let me know what information has been supplied, I would be very very grateful. I have been searching for any information about him  since 1993 (when I discovered who he was, sadly my husband never knew about him,and I would love to make contact, especially to discuss details about his mother (Blanche, her maiden name was Fraser)

His name is GORDON GRAHAM STUART STRINGER, If the entry is about the correct Gordon, he was born 9 Jan 1918 in Brightlingsea, Essex, father stated to be George Stringer, a Sapper in the Australian Army, he was wounded.
during WW1, and was returned to Australia. His birth was registered in Ilford Essex, mother was
Blanche Stringer nee Fraser

I will wait with hope that some can do this for me, thank you.

Perthshire / Army How can I find out?
« on: Thursday 21 August 08 17:40 BST (UK)  »
I have seen on the Scottish 1901 census that my grandfather(James Barr) had been a soldier,  however, this was the first indication that he had been , his wife was noted as "wife of a soldier Reservist"
Because of the year, I imagine he could have been involved in the Boer War, but how can I find out which part of the army he would have been in?

He died in 1913 so would not have been involved in WW1.

He  lived in Greenock, Scotland, so probably would have been in a Scottish regiment, is there any way I can trace him as a soldier, no other records I have about him, makes any mention of this.

He had been in a Reformatory school (Kibble, for which there are no records now available) and its possible he could have been sent into the army upon his discharge, would anyone have any idea of
what regiment he may have been sent into?

He had been sentenced to 6 years for stealing newspapers, so would have been about 17 or 18 years old by the time of discharge.

Any advice given would be very much appreciated, thank you.

Perthshire / Elusive gt grandmother help needed
« on: Sunday 03 August 08 17:38 BST (UK)  »
Myg gandmother Mary Hannah Grant nee Copeland b.1850 in Derby, was last sighted in Perth  with her husband George Nelson Grant b.1841 Edinburgh, and their daughter Mabel (my g.mother)
on the 1881 census.
Normally they lived in Derby. However, in 1881 their son also George Nelson, was in an Industrial School, for which no records now exist, he had been sent there for stealing newspapers and was sentenced for 6 years.
I do`nt know why he was in Perth, but I believe there may have been relatives there.

Mary Hannah disappeared after this time, and it appears that she & George Nelson had seperated
he had a new "wife" by 1891 Annie Packer, they married in 1910, George stating he was now a widower.
I assumed that Mary Hannah may have died then, but to my surprise, I recently saw on someone`s family tree, the death of "my"  Mary Hannah given as Oct 1919

With great excitement I contacted the author, only to be informed that she knew nothing about Mary Hannah!
I have since seen a message on Ancestry, stating that this person "lifts"names from other peoples trees, why she wants to do that I`ve no idea ! I cannot see the purpose in listing someone not connected to you. (But whose tree did she find the info on?)

The main problem in trying to trace Mary Hannah is in her surname, she obviously adopted a new one, her new partner`s perhaps? and without knowing what that is, I cannot find her.I`ve
tried searching for her under the name of Copeland & Grant on the death indexes (for England) but with no success.
Its possible however, that she may have met a new partner in Scotland, but what was his name???

Can anyone help,do you know Mary Hannah and who her partner was?
or can you offer any advice on how to find her?

I have been searching for some years now without success, and I would be so grateful if anyone can offer a solution

Immigrants & Emigrants - General / Anyone researching this family???
« on: Saturday 15 December 07 11:22 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to discover more information about my gt uncle GEORGE NELSON GRANT, he was with the army until 1920 in Bombay India.
I have a photo of him with his family take in India, obviously after 1920 which shows a young child not mentioned in the army record, this could signify  that he had remarried (his wife had died previous to 1920 according to the army record)

I have obtained the birth cert of the eldest son, which shows that his mother Mary Jane, nee McCarthy orMcGuinness, was born in Malta.I may have difficulty in obtaining her birth cert as I do not know her m other`s name.

I know that the British library may have info about them and my son will be visiting there in January, being disabled I am unableto travel there myself, but in the meantime I would welcome any advice on anywhere else I could find information.

I know so far that he worked for the Central railway in Bombay, in the audit office, perhaps his son also worked there? his name was also George Nelson, he was in the army for a very brief period in 1915, from June until Sept when he was discharged ( I wonder why?, he was not wounded, I have his army record but it does not explain why he was discharged)

Two sets of twins were in the family, one of girls and one of boys (twins do run in my family)
I would dearly love to know if there are any descendants.

My gt uncle is on a passenger list for 1929 travelling back to Bombay after having been in England,
perhaps he had gone to visit family?

Possibly he remained in India and died there, but when? where else can I check for information about this?

Sadly my mother would never answer any questions about the family, and there are no living relatives now who may have known the answers, my only hope is in finding any descendants
Iam keeping my fingers crossed!
