London and Middlesex / Frank Yarnold 1863-1948
« on: Tuesday 30 January 24 10:56 GMT (UK)  »
Do any Rootschatters have an interest in the family of Frank and Edith Yarnold who were living in Harberton Road, Islington (1911 census and thereafter)?  If so, I should be most grateful if you could send me a personal message.

Thank you  :)

Any assistance please with this passage from a will drafted in 1669.  It concerns the wishes of the testator as to the treatment of his daughter.  I think he is instructing his son that if he wishes to turn her off some piece of land then he has to pay her recompense, but I'm not sure:

The Common Room / GRO Can't Find Indexed Marriage
« on: Tuesday 25 October 22 11:26 BST (UK)  »
Hi All:
I recently ordered a Marriage Certificate from the GRO for Mary Hutchins/William Phillips, 1839, Q3, Penzance, Vol 9, P 257.  I double-checked the details given in the indexes both on An***y and FreeBMD.  The GRO have responded with:
"There is no trace of the above mentioned person at the reference you quoted."
Has anyone else had this happen?  If so, were you able to discover whether the indices are incorrect or did asking for a second search provide the marriage details in the end?
I'm not sure how to proceed!  Any advice, please?

London and Middlesex / Looking for the Islington Register Office (1839)
« on: Tuesday 31 May 22 22:10 BST (UK)  »
In 1839 my gt-gt grandparents married before the Registrar and Superintendent Registrar in Islington. I should like to find out where the Registry Office was.  Does anyone know, or know how to find out, please?

This image was taken from a recently re-discovered ambrotype.  Looking at the pagaoda sleeves and geometric trimming on the dresses, I think it was taken in the early 1860s.  Would other Rootschatters agree?

It looks to me as if the dress on the lefthand sitter doesn't really fit which makes me wonder if the clothes were borrowed or perhaps kept by the studio as much props for the portrait as a background cloth?  Does anyone know if that was something studios might do?

I'm also hopeless at guessing ages - any ideas as to the ages of the girls, please?

England / An Unknown Infant: Documentation Questions Raised by a Sad Tale
« on: Tuesday 11 February 20 09:41 GMT (UK)  »
These questions have come up as a result of following a 1842 newspaper story - which lacks a documented conclusion.  The background is: a package containing the body of a newborn is pulled ashore in Essex.  An inquest is held and the verdict returned that the infant was dead before being dropped in the Thames, whether born alive or not it was impossible to say.  The woman arrested on suspicion of dropping the baby's body into the Thames from a boat was supposed to have given birth to the child in Surrey.  She was committed to trial for concealing a birth  - there is no newspaper report of such trial ever taking place and no prison records survive to evidence her immediate fate.

My questions are these:  would the birth and death of the infant be registered?  If so what would be given as to surname as the accused woman did not speak to confirm or deny that she (a) had given birth at all or (b) had disposed of the body?  Would the law require that the birth be registered in the assumed birth registration district and the death there also - or would the death be registered in Essex where the body was brought to shore?  Or would the Courts simply bypass the whole registration issue (therefore technically "concealing the birth" themselves!)?

I assume the body would be buried in unconsecrated ground in the parish where the inquest took place - would there be any record of this?

I'm not being morbid but trying every avenue to accurately establish the identity of this woman and child so, ideally, need to find as much documentation around these events as I can.

Suffolk / Rudland/Rudlen/Rudlin/Rudling, in and around Ipswich
« on: Monday 03 February 20 15:37 GMT (UK)  »
The above group of surnames originally cropped up at the periphery of my research in 2008 and I got no further with them.  There appear to be a few Rudland/len/lin families living in and around Ipswich at the beginning of the 1800s; two with heads of household named Samuel.

I am now following a news story, possibly involving an ancestor of mine, and the names have popped up again.  Please, has any other Rootschatter any Essex/Ipswich-based Rudland/Rudlen/Rudlins in their tree - any information on members of either the family living in Ipswich St Clements (possibly previously from Colchester), or the other based around Boxford, might help me to untease my tangle of half-leads!

Armed Forces / MOD Service Records for a Multi-Service Military Man
« on: Wednesday 02 January 19 20:48 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking into the history of a man whose Medal Index Card (WW1) bears a Territorial number, then a Royal Engineers number, followed by an RAF number.  He remained in service post-war and was still in the RAF Regiment in 1925.  Things get a bit cloudy then as he may have transferred to MOD Police or back to the Army.  He was certainly posted abroad.  By the time the 1939 Register was compiled he was out of the services BUT was Sergeant Quartermaster with an Anti-Aircraft battery (Royal Artillery).  My question is, who will have his service records?  Will it be the Army or RAF - or both?

Berkshire / Albion House, 27 Oxford Road, Newbury
« on: Monday 01 May 17 00:05 BST (UK)  »
The building named "Albion House" that stood on the site of 27 Oxford Road, Newbury, was demolished some years ago and the site re-developed.  In WW1 it was used by the Red Cross as an auxiliary hospital and before that, during the 1850s-60s, it had been a school.  I am looking for a picture of the building and have searched the net but have not been lucky so far.  Any ideas of where I might be lucky enough to find such a picture, please?
