Hi,

I'm hoping someone can help.
I have a John Harry Phillips born 1871 Ellesmere.  He married a local Ellesmere girl Sarah Ann Davies (from the age on her death cert she was born 1874), but I'm having trouble finding the details.  The added thing thrown into the pot is that whilst John was registered with the middle name Harry, throughout his early life he seems to have used the middle name Henry, and later in life then used Harry as his first name.  Their first son Francis John was born 1895 (got the certificate to check MMN), so I have been looking around that date and found a marriage in Ellesmere for John Henry Phillips in 1893, which I though was them, but the Sarah Ann for that entry has the surname ROBERTS!  Could this be a mistake?  The only others I can find are one in 1886 (too early) and one in 1890, which is possible but on the BMD entry there is no female listed for the entry, just John.  How do I go about finding out who the female for that marriage is?  By the way I use Ancestry for my research - is it possible that the 1893 entry is wrongly transcribed?   I'd like to see if I can narrow it down to avoid having to buy extra certificates.
Thanks

Northumberland / Newburn 1891 - what sort of area was this?
« on: Tuesday 28 September 10 22:45 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I'm wondering if anyone can tell me what sort of area Semington in Newburn and Newburn hall were in 1891 and 1901.
I have a family who have all been coal miners for as far back as I can trace them which is to 1811 so far.  When they marreid, they married into more coal mining families.  The addresses on birth and census records up until 1891 were mining villages in Durham like Old Rows, Collierly, Usworth and Washington and then suddenly in 1891 they have moved to Northumberland and are living 'on their own means' in Loraine Terrace, Semington and then in 1901 Tyne Vale terrace in Newburn Hall.
I have no idea where they would have got any money from and am curious to know if there was a big difference in the addresses they had in Durham and Northumberland.

Thanks

World War One / Occupation - military and normal?
« on: Thursday 08 April 10 13:09 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
Can anyone tell me if it was normal to have a military rank/occupation on a marriage/death certificate in addition to a normal occupation?  Could it be that he was a reserve and not a full time soldier?  He was in his early 40s at the time.

I have John Harry Phillips, whose wife died in May 1917 in Lancashire and on her death certificate, under occupation it says ' wife of corporal 7321 John Harry Phillips Kings Shropshire Light Infantry, then underneath it says ironworker.  Iron worker was his occupation on the 1911 census.
On his 2nd marriage one month later (yes 1 month!!) in Shrewsbury Shropshire it has his occupation as Corporal, K.S.L.I and then butcher.  Butcher was his occupation up until 1906 at least and the occupation he continued in later in life as various certificates have him listed as a master butcher.
I have tried to find records of John Harry Phillips on Ancestry but have drawn a blank, the only one I could find that may have matched was a medal card but it was for a private with a different regimental number.

Thanks

Lancashire / Iron Works - Lancashire
« on: Monday 15 March 10 15:55 GMT (UK)  »
I have managed to find (finally!) to find someone I've been looking for for ages on the 1911 census (still can't find him in 1991 or 1901 but it's a start).  Anyway, on the1911 census, under occupation it says   'contract Faggaton iron Works'.  At the time he was living in Wellington Street, Widnes.  Can anyone tell me if there was a Faggaton Iron works anywhere near Widnes in 1911?

Thanks

The Common Room / Phillips - help needed
« on: Monday 01 March 10 20:08 GMT (UK)  »
I've posted this here because, based on the information I have to date, I have no idea where to look for this family.  No-one in the family (hubby side) seems to know anything about their father's history or his parents.  I'm hoping someone can help me track them down.  Please bear with me, I'll try and get down everything I know and have done to date to try and find them.

Ernest William Phillips b1903 Station Road, Ellesmere Port Cheshire (my hubby's grandfather)
Albert George Phillips b1906 Enfield road, Ellesmere Port Cheshire
Parents were Harry and Annie Phillips (nee Davies)

On Ernest's birth certificate his father's occupation is given as master butcher.  I have searched the 1901 census for a Harry Phillips, butcher/master butcher and can't find one.  The nearest i can find is a 14 year old butchers assistant in Birkenhead listed as nephew to Frank and Florence Petit - but that would mean that harry would only be 16 when his first son was born.  Is that likely?  Also, i can't find a marriage for him in that area (assuming he married shortly before his chldren were born and in the same area).  I also cannot find a married Harry who is a butcher with a wife Annie.  I then tried to track the family down in the 1911 census as I have the birth dates (and for Ernest his certificate), but I can't find them anywhere.  I have recently been told that there was a third brother - I don't know if he was older or younger as no-one knows who he was as it seems there was some family rift and he went off and was never seen again.

Ernest married in Shrewsbury in January 1927 but the address for him on his marriage cert is 118 Bow Road, Bow -presumably London. My mother in law didn't know anything about this London address.

Ernests brother Albert also married in Shrewsbury in 1931 and it has been assumed all this time that he came to Shrewsbury with Ernest - but no-one actually knows.  The question is where were they between their births in 1903 and 1906 and their marriages in 1927/1931 - I can't find them anywhere.   The parents names of harry Phillips and Annie Davies are so common it's impossible to track them down.

Any suggestions on what to do next gratefully received or do we just have to accept that we're not going to find them.  :-\

Thanks

Northumberland / Obtaining a copy of a coroner's report
« on: Wednesday 22 July 09 16:46 BST (UK)  »
My grandmother Alice Urwin was killed in an accident in Newcastle in 1958.  I have a copy of her death certificate, upon which it states was provided by the coroner for Newcastle Upon Tyne following an inquest on 6th February 1958.

Can anyone tell me whether I would be able to obtain a copy of that report and where from?

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / Can anyone find Europe in 1891 & 1901?
« on: Monday 20 July 09 13:47 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I've posted this here because I'm not sure whether to put it on the Wales boards or the English.  I have an ancestor Europe Euphrates Thomas b 1865 Montgomeryshire, Wales who I can't find anywhere on the 1891 or 1901 census.
In 1871 he is in Welshpool, Montgomeryshire, with his father Samuel and siblings, William, Mary, Rosalana(incorrectly transcribed - she is Rose Helena) and Charles and also a Jane Jones, listed as sister to Samuel.
In 1881 he is still in Welshpool with his father Samuel and brother Meschach.  Also with them is a housekeeper, Maria Allen.
Europe then disppears until I find him again in 1904, when he marries Margaret Shaw in West Derby, Liverpool.  I know his brother Meschach (known as Edward) was in West Derby, Liverpool in 1901 and that might explain him turning up there in 1904, although as I understand from family, Edward left Liverpool around 1903 to work in Hong Kong.
I have now found Europe on the 1911 census living in Birkenhead Cheshire with his wife Margaret, which has enabled me to find a death index for him for 1923 in Birkenhead.

As his name is quite distinctive I thought he'd be easy to track down but he seems to have completely disappeared for 20 odd years between 1881 and 1904. .  Does anyone have any ideas about where he might have been between 1881 and 1904, as I can't seem to find him anywhere.

here's hoping

The Common Room / Sailing to Hong Kong in 1902
« on: Friday 12 June 09 14:36 BST (UK)  »
Hi,  I'm not sure if this sits here but I don't know where else to post it.  I am trying to find out which route a great grandfather took when he sailed to Hong Kong about 1902.
Edward Thomas went to work on the Hong Kong harbour somewhere between 1902 (when his second and last son was born) and 1906, when he arrived back in the UK and died.  We have photographs of him working on the harbour and are told that he was the clerk of works there (unfortunatley no dates on the photographs).  To enable me to try and trace him on passenger lists and therefore find the date he went out I need to know the route he would have taken from Liverpool, where he was living in 1902 to Hong Kong.  I have not found any lists that give me the ability to put in Hong Kong as the ships destination.  Edward came back in 1906 and died upon his return following a short stay in hospital. We are told he was 'put off' a ship on his way home due to illness and finally travelled home by alternative means but don't have any documentation to say where he sailed from or the intended route
Hoping someone can help

Canada / Records of land sales in Watrous
« on: Thursday 26 March 09 22:05 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I am returning to a brick wall that I've had for a few years now in another attempt to knock it down.  Can anyone tell me if there is likely to be any record of land/farm sales anywhere for Watrous for land that I know was owned in 1911 and was supposed to be sold about 1912-13? (could be later - the person who was supposed to be selling the land and returning to the UK never ever turned up).
Thanks

Nadine
