Down / Davidson family Killough county Down
« on: Sunday 11 October 20 18:53 BST (UK)  »
Time for the annual dusting off  of my brickwalls to see if anything new has come up.

I start at the marriage of Robert Davidson to Eleanor McCullough on 26 February 1862 • Rathmullan Church of Ireland, Rathmullen, County down

By license. Witnesses William Murphy & Benjamin Robinson

He resided at st Johns Point Killough. His father is given as Arthur Davidson labourer.

I have also found an Arthur Davidson of St Johns Point with a father Arthur Davidson, labourer so am assuming this is his brother.  I have also found three other possible siblings Ellen, James and Mary Jane. I can follow these people forwards but am no further forward on finding Arthur senior or who was his wife or any other info going backwards. I have been to Killough and looked at the Killough church parish records and can find no Davidsons appearing earlier than these dates so think they moved into the area but where from? Downpatrick or further afield?

Eleanor McCullough father was Joseph Mccullough shoemaker of Killough. Again I have made no prgress in going backwards from her.

Any help in breaking down these brickwalls gratefully received.

The Common Room / posting from Gro to USA
« on: Wednesday 15 January 20 22:03 GMT (UK)  »
Just a quick question .

I (UK) am helping someone from USA with their tree and they will  need to order a marriage certificate from the GRO. Does the standard postage  ie  cost of £11 include it being posted to their address in USA or does it cost more?

Thanks

Down / McDowell - Downpatrick
« on: Monday 08 May 17 15:15 BST (UK)  »
Time to dust off one of my brickwalls ……

I have an eleanor mcdowell born according to her 1939  register entry  10 aug 1856 (downpatrick, County Down ireland).   she appears with her husband robert davidson (born Killough, county down ireland) and daughter annie in Warrington, Lancashire .

I have them in the 1891, 1901 and 1911 census living at 5 chester street, douglas, Isle of man. Eleanor’s  birthdate for these 3 census indicate 1862, 1863 and 1862. However her death entry in 1941 indicates 1856 too.

They claim to have been married 27 years so around 1884. Their first child named Eleanor was born 1884 at 8  chester street. I have not been able to find a marrriage for them either in I.O.M. or Ireland. They are not listed in braddon, I.O.M.  directory of 1881/82.  Her husband and 9 children are fine . I have info on them but eleanor  senior is a mystery.

I have been trying to look sideways at her siblings. I knew from a relative that eleanor had a sister Jane who married a James Ennett and had 2 children, Cissie and Albert. I have no idea what cissie was short for?  Cissie went on to marry James ennett and had 3 children – Albert, Barbara and William. The remained on I.O. M as sometime during the WW2  years my relative visited Cissie there.

Also I have two other names that I think belong to Eleanor ... siblings??

1, Elizabeth mcdowell born 1866 Downpatrick. She has a daughter elizabeth McDowell who was born in march 1890 at howe farm, bradden which is the same address at which one of eleanor;s daughters died in 1889.  Elizabeth (junior)  died of pneumonia in Sept 1890 at 8 chester street which was eleanor’s address at that time. Elizabeth (senior) appears on the 1911 census in Douglas, Isle of man as a servant  and single.

2.  Sarah McDowell born around 1869. She had a daughter Sarah on  5 July 1898. This child died 03 sept 1898 at 5 chester street which is eleanor’s address at the time. I have no other sightings of her.

However researching these three siblings gets me no closer to discovering the names of their parents or where they were before or after the events given. Can anyone help??

As far as I know all the above were church of Ireland/ England not catholic.

many thanks.

World War Two / help with uniform please
« on: Monday 16 September 13 16:13 BST (UK)  »
I have this picture of my father in WW2. I have  been told by older siblings he was something to do with signals and served in Burma. I was wondering if there is anything on his uniform which could confirm which unit he was with.

Thank you

Down / Davidson family in Killough
« on: Friday 06 July 12 12:45 BST (UK)  »
i thought i had posted about this family before but looking back though i have tried elsewhere before it does not appear that i have posted here.

I am visiting northern ireland in September to do genealogical research so am looking for any further info that i could research whilst there.

this is my family line and all that  i know about them

DAVIDSON, ARTHUR - poss born c 1814

Residence Feb 1862 Killough, County Down, Ireland (labourer  on Robert Davidsons marriage certificate to Ellen McCullough)

  Children ( I think?)
1.Davidson, Arthur b.  c1838 killough Ireland married Catherine Smith
2. Davidson, Mary b.  c1838 Killough, County Down, Ireland
3.  DAVIDSON, James b.  c1838 Killough, County Down, Ireland married Sarah Bell
4. DAVIDSON, ROBERT  b 1838 Killough, County Down, Ireland married Ellen McCullough.her father was a shoemaker called Joseph.  I have their marriage certificate.

Robert Davidson had 5 children– all baptised Killough.

Robert Davidson born 1864 ( my g grandfather and i have his birth certificate). The  other children were Anne Jane born 1867, Margaret born 1869( died 1870) , Joseph born 1871 and William born 1874.  . I don’t know what happened to Robert's siblings except
1.   Anne Jane appears as single in killough 1901 census and then appears to have a child Jane Davidson born isle of man who appears in killough with Ellen McCullough Davidson  in 1911 census
2.   Margaret died aged 1
3.   Joseph = nothing at all
4.   William = nothing at all
5.   Robert junior himself moves to isle of man sometime around 1884 when his first child is born there. he is there on 1891, 1901 and 1911 census. In the 1911 census he states married 27 years ie around 1883 but I have not been able to find his marriage to Eleanor McDowell who came from Downpatrick either on isle of man or in  Ireland. From the 1891 census  onwards I can follow all his family down to the present day. Family story says that one was protestant and one catholic and that there was tension between families because of this and that is why they ran away to isle of man. Whether true or not I cannot say. If it is true then Eleanor McDowell must have been the catholic one.

i would love to work backwards from Arthur , learn more  about the two Ellens family and also find out it there are any living descendants still living in Killough

many thanks for any info that can shed more light on this branch of the family

US Lookup Requests / grifiths/williams pennsylvania and new york
« on: Tuesday 10 April 12 14:48 BST (UK)  »
Looking for info on Jane Griffiths, born 1872 Amlwch. She emigrated to Edwardsville, Pennsylvania as a friend/companion/servant to the Williams family sometime around  1886. She married Thomas Williams around 1888/89. I cannot find her entry in US or her marriage. Her first child Marnie (or Mamie) Grace  was born c1890. Marnie died in about 1900/1901 ( diptheria outbreak?) and here lies one of my problems. Relatives say she died in Edwardsville and she is buried in a cemetery there. they say they have visited it and it was a cemetery next to a river that flooded and the coffins floated free and had to be reburied.  i believe this to be the forty fort graveyard. The problem is that the family later  moved to Clinton New York and seem to be  there in the 1900 census. the family consists of sophie e Williams 1892, Jane Griffiths Williams, 1894, William Williams 1896 and Mary Elizabeth Williams 1898. another child Charles T Williams was born 1901. Family stories say Marnie died the day before Charles was born and that they didn't move to new york until later. Later census say all children were born new york which would indicate they had been in new york since 1892 so why/how would Marnie be buried in edwardsville. i am trying to find out for sure where the children were born and where Marnie died.

Jane snr died in Oneida in 1932 and i have her obituary and will. I have her in 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930 census

Also looking for info on younger sister Elizabeth Griffiths born 1880 amlwch wales and emigrated to US .i have her arrival in 1905 aged 24 when she was going to join her sister in Clinton, New York( in fact she puts thomas Williams as who she is going  to see although he had abandoned family by then we understood) She became a servant/housekeeper  to a NY stockbroker who invested some of her wages in stocks/shares for her and she became quite wealthy. She never married or had children. she returned to wales around 1824 and paid for  a slate headstone on the family grave. she returned to US and lost all her money in the wall street crash of 1929. According to family history this slightly unhinged her and she died around 1950 in a psychiatric hospital. i have her possibly in Oneida, utica ward in 1920 census. Anything else  would be appreciated.eg her death, her visit to England details, other census info etc
Many thanks
