The Common Room / Findagrave swamped with inaccurate entries?
« on: Friday 01 July 22 19:43 BST (UK)  »
Is it just me  - but I am finding that Ancestry links through to FindaGrave are oftentimes coming up with entries that do not relate to photographed headstones?

Seems to me some folk are at best harvesting Family History Society transcripts or at worst projecting their own, possibly flawed research.

In the spirit of the  apparent wishes of the FAG website I have over the years contributed photos and data, but on several occasions when I have contacted authors for clarification or challenge an entry I have often been convinced they don't actually know anything about the entry I am talking about. Some have refused to change their entry when I have produced documentary evidence  challenging what they have put.

Such a pity that such a useful website appears now to have lowered the bar in regard to the source of submissions.

Rant over.

Armed Forces / Anglo Boer conflict or India? What uniform?
« on: Tuesday 15 February 22 18:53 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone identify rank, regiment and location of this photograph please?

Internet searches regarding the uniform have proved inconclusive and I have no details about the provenance of the photograph.

Thank you, Ssxy

The Common Room / Free legal upgrade from Win 7 & 8 to 10
« on: Monday 19 October 20 18:51 BST (UK)  »
I've posted this here rather than the Technical board as this is not a query but to highlight little known fact that the Microsoft official site is still allowing free upgrades. As of this morning 19 Oct 2020 (UK) I was able to upgrade my laptop from Win 7 to Win 10.  :)

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

If like me, very nervous about attempting it I thoroughly recommend watching the video below beforehand which talks you through the process. I played the video on my PC and stopped and started it as I proceeded with the upgrade on my laptop.

Other than having to uninstall a redundant Microsoft app along the way the process was straight-foreword but took a while.

I have no connection with the author of the video.

Cheshire Lookup Requests / Marriage of Elizabeth Penson to John Kennedy Macclesfield
« on: Tuesday 28 January 20 17:58 GMT (UK)  »
FamilySearch has marriage of Elizabeth and John 10 September 1849 with image from Cheshire Parish Registers, but there are 2 further entries - "intended marriage" one 4 August 1849 and the second for an earlier marriage 14 February 1847; neither has an accompanying image.

I would be grateful if someone with access to these records could confirm that the earlier record exists, and is not a typo.

Perhaps someone got cold feet, then changed their mind a couple of years later!

Sussex Completed Lookup Requests / COMPLETED: Beckley marriage lookup please
« on: Saturday 23 November 19 07:30 GMT (UK)  »
Unless I am mistaken I can't find the Beckley OPRs on line, so would greatly appreciate help on the following:

Is there a marriage entry 26 Dec 1803 for William Standen of Beckley to Mercy Wenham of Ewhurst?

Thank you, Ssxy.

The Common Room / Previous married name or maiden name in OPR entry?
« on: Tuesday 13 February 18 21:29 GMT (UK)  »
Some years ago at ESRO Lewes in East Sussex I viewed the original OPR entry of the marriage of my 4th great grandparents William Eldridge and Ann Walter at Brede, Sussex 20 Sep 1788. It clearly showed that Ann was a widow.

I have just found a tree on IGI that has appended the baptism of an Ann Walter. If that information is correct, it suggests that the OPR entry is showing Ann's maiden name rather than the surname of her late husband.

Is it possible that the 1788 OPR entry shows Ann's maiden name rather than her previous married name?

Confusingly an Australian death certificate of daughter Ann Maria (Whiteman) gives Ann's surname as Pearce. Needless to say I have yet to find any evidence of any earlier marriage.

NB There are to this day some trees on the internet that have cut and pasted from my now defunct FTM site that call her Ann Widow Walter or Ann Walter Widow! :o

Sussex / Ye Olde TrippeAdvisor - 1833
« on: Tuesday 06 December 11 19:36 GMT (UK)  »
I thought some of our non-UK readers with Sussex ancestors might enjoy a contemporary view of part of the county written back in 1833. The book is entitled An Historical and Descriptive account of the Coast of Sussex and written by John Docwra Parry.

An index at the front of the book has hyperlinks to different towns and villages - so you don't have to read it all if your carriage is about to depart.
