Australia / John Hammer Harry from Cornwall
« on: Tuesday 21 August 18 07:30 BST (UK)  »
My great grandfather was a Cornish miner born 1837 St Mewan.
I believe he came to Australia 1858 on "Storm Cloud" arriving Port Adelaide. This is not proven. I cannot find where he was for several years.
By 1864 he had apparently settled El Dorado Victoria. In 1865 he married at Beechworth Victoria.
A large family was raised in El Dorado. In later years he lived in Rutherglen Victoria.
I now have evidence which suggests he may have taken a trip back to Cornwall in March1902 on "Sophocles" departing Albany W.A. It is unknown how or why he travelled via W.A. This is a mystery.
Apparently he returned to Australia late 1902 on "Moravia".
He died 1915 at Rutherglen and is buried at Carlyle Cemetery.
I am very interested to learn further details as by 1902 his parents and siblings with the exception of a younger brother Henry had died.
Henry was innkeeper at "Seven Stars Inn " St Austell. It is possible that was his destination.

Can anyone help with passenger lists or other snippets of information?
I think he travelled alone.

With thanks.

Cornwall / Marian Minear ( also spelling variations)bC1840 St Austell
« on: Wednesday 04 July 18 01:58 BST (UK)  »
Help appreciated in accounting for this person believed to be daughter of Jane (Guy) Minear , listed 1841 Census aged 1 living East Turnpike.
1851 Census transcribed as Mary Ann Mincer aged 11.
1861 Census as
Mary Ann Minear visitor aged 21 living with family of William (? a brother) Minear.
What became of Mary Ann ?Did she marry ?
Apparently her father could not have been William Minear as he had died 1832 , makes her parentage dubious.

With thanks.

Australia Lookups completed / Did John Hammer Harry Return to Cornwall ?
« on: Tuesday 05 June 18 07:59 BST (UK)  »
I think I may have discovered that my great grandfather John Hammer Harry 1837-1915 who migrated from Cornwall ,  returned home to Cornwall March 1902. on "Sophocles". Seems to be him on passenger list which I have accessed.
It was also reported in the Ovens and Murray Advertiser ( Beechworth) 15 March 1902 that John Harry formerly of Eldorado had left Rutherglen for Melbourne intending to make a return trip to Cornwall .
He died Sep 1915 Victoria so clearly returned to Australia.
I have found him on the Electoral Roll for Rutherglen Victoria 1909 and 1914.I wonder when he returned.
Whist he had 7 siblings back in Cornwall , with one exception they had all died by 1902.
A younger brother Henry Harry at that time was Inn Keeper at the Bugle Inn , Bugle Cornwall at least until 1914.
I am guessing he might have visited his brother.

I am looking for further confirmation of his travel including his return to Australia.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Derbyshire Lookup Requests / Birth/Bpt record for Joseph Wyatt/Whyatt b24 Oct 1862
« on: Wednesday 23 May 18 05:29 BST (UK)  »
Look up appreciated please.I am hoping to verify the birth location of Joseph Wyatt/Whyatt thought to have been born Glossop Derbyshire s/o Samuel Wyatt and Mary Cooper.
I believe he migrated to USA and died 1948 Rochester , Monroe City , New York.
His death registration states that he came from Devonshire not Glossop Derbyshire.
I need a birth/bpt record in order to verify I have the correct person.
The 1871 Census states he was born Glossop.

Cornwall / Sale of wife
« on: Saturday 07 April 18 04:07 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to identify this George Trethew(e)y who I think was living with Ann Gomow/Gommow 1841 Census Thallnick?? St Stephen in Brannel.
I have possible link to Ann.

The actions of George Trethewey of St. Stephen in Brannel quickly became
national news, the following being taken from the London newspaper The Poor
Man’s Guardian, 25 April 1835.

SALE OF A WIFE – One of those abominable
scenes which disgrace the morals and manners
of the present enlightened age, and is almost
unparalleled in the history of this country
took place Friday last in the market-place
of St Austell. A man named Tretheway, of St.
Stephen’s in Branwell, in consequence of the
supposed infidelity of his wife, resolved to get
rid of her by public sale, and about eleven
o’clock led her into the market decorated with
a halter. The husband who appeared to be
about sixty years of age, put her up for sale; 2d
was offered for the dame, but this being
quickly doubled by a person in the crowd, who
turns out to be an itinerant tinker, he was declared
to be the purchaser, and the woman
handed over to her new master. The farmer of
the market now demanded his toll, and we
blush to record the fact, that, despite the
“march of intellect,” in the town of St. Austell,
in the nineteenth century, toll was paid by
George Tretheway for the sale of his wife ! This
disgraceful business being ended the parties
retired to a neighbouring ale house, when a
new scene opened upon the astonished spectators.
A woman of about forty years of age,
stepped forward to claim the hand of George
Tretheway, and was quickly followed by a second,
who claimed a similar honour. A battle
between the women was the consequence,
which ended in favour of the first claimant.

With thanks.

Australia / Kitty Harry born Kapunda South Australia 1864
« on: Monday 02 April 18 08:27 BST (UK)  »
I have been unable to find a South Australian birth Registration for Kitty Harry said to have been 10 May 1864.
Her parents William Henry Harry , Mary Hancock (Minear), together with three young children arrived Port Adelaide 7 April 1864 on "Ocean Chief" after a voyage of about 91 days.
I think this must mean that she was born soon after arrival.

She married William Henry Treloar 24 Sep 1885 (by Rev. J. C. Hill) at the residence of her parents.

Assistance appreciated.

Australia / William Henry Harry arrived Port Adelaide Apr 1864 on "Ocean Chief".
« on: Saturday 17 February 18 07:05 GMT (UK)  »
I am researching William Henry Harry and family who arrived Port Adelaide 7 April 1864 on " Ocean Chief".
Whh 1831-1908 had married April 1853 St Austell Cornwall , Mary Hancock Minear 1834-1911.
I think they lived Saddleworth South Australia and may be buried Payneham.
They had at least 11 children. 3 came with them when they migrated.

Mary may be the base daughter of Jane (Guy) Minear.
I mam wondering if the middle name Hancock suggests a further connection.
I am hoping someone might have knowledge of this family.

My Harry family does appear to have Hancock connections.

Any snippet of information greatly appreciated.

US Lookup Requests / 1870 Census St Louis Missouri
« on: Thursday 15 February 18 05:34 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to discover what became of John Wyatt bC1833 Glossop Derbyshire UK.
The 1870 Census for St Louis Missouri has a John Wyatt labourer from England together with his wife Ellen and two young children born Missouri.
Co-incidently the children are Ellen and Joseph , perhaps named after his parents.
Three of his brothers migrated to Australia but no indication that JW went there also.
JW was still in England 1859.

Perhaps a marriage record would help resolve if this is him.

With thanks
