Dorset / Tuckmill Farm nr. Hawkchurch
« on: Wednesday 26 August 20 05:48 BST (UK)  »
Does anybody happen to have a photo of Tuckmill Farm to the north-east of Hawkchurch, on the Dorset/Devon border? It is, or was, within the Beerhall Tithing. I have a map of its location but can't find any photos on the Web.
Same request for Thorn in Wooton Fitzpaine, Dorset which is apparently a Grade II listed building. I can't find any photos on the Web although I found an extensive description of the house.
My great-grandmother, Emma Holt, lived in both these properties when a child.
Many thanks.

Armed Forces / Royal Artillery career path
« on: Monday 17 August 20 08:08 BST (UK)  »
This is probably a really obvious question for anybody who has Army connections so I apologise in advance.
My 3xgreat-grandfather was a Major-General in the Royal Artillery. In the early 1820s, he seems to have been in the No. 7 Company, 8th Battalion; in 1841 he was "Colonel of the 6th Battalion, Adjutant's Detachment".
My question is this: are soldiers moved from one company or battalion to another in the same way that sailors serve on various ships throughout their careers?
Thank you for your help.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Holly Street, Gosport
« on: Thursday 30 July 20 08:00 BST (UK)  »
Does anybody happen to have a photo of Holly Street as it used to be, before it was lined with yet more red brick?
My grandmother was born there in 1891 but I can't find any photos of the old housing. I've tried various historic Gosport sites and have a couple of books of photos of old Gosport, but no luck in any of them.
I'd be really grateful if anybody can help.

Europe / Anybody living in or near Saint-Malo?
« on: Tuesday 21 July 20 05:09 BST (UK)  »
Hello

I'm looking for somebody living within easy reach of the cemetery in Rocabey (Saint-Malo) who could go and read a headstone for me.
The name is Pierre Auguste Emile Marie ROGER, born 5 May 1921, died 14 March 2008, all in Saint-Malo.
The grave is referenced as 2S - 56.
All information from the headstone would be helpful, in particular the names and date of the spouse and/or any children.
I live in South Australia so it would be rather far to travel, even if we were not in the middle of a pandemic!
This is a long shot but if you could help, I would be very grateful.

Dorset / Holt / Searle / Gapper / Legg families Chideok area
« on: Tuesday 02 June 20 06:55 BST (UK)  »
The attached photo was taken in 1938 during my parents' honeymoon in Dorset. My mother is on the left of the photo but I have no idea who the other people are.
I have other photos showing members of the abovenamed families who are relatives through my mother's grandmother, Emma Holt (1857 Charmouth - 1937 Gosport). She married James Lacy in Parkstone in 1882. The Holts are related to the Searle, Gapper and Legg families through marriages of some of Emma's sisters. Others married into the Hodder, Hawker, Trim and Charles families so the people in the photo may even be from these families.
This is a very long shot but does anybody out there recognise any of the people in this photo?
Many thanks for your help.

This is a very very long shot. I have found an old photo in a pile of photos of my paternal grandparents and am wondering if this is my great-grandmother, Jane Adams, born in Salisbury (Wilts) in 1856, married in Lymington (Hants) in 1884 and died in Portsea (Hants) in 1925.
Are there any Adams descendants out there who could confirm this for me, please?
As I said, it's a very very long shot.....

Sussex / George Edward Eastwood / Brighton / 1911
« on: Wednesday 18 April 18 05:45 BST (UK)  »
I'm helping a friend with her family tree and have hit a snag with George Edward Eastwood.

On ancestry.co.uk I found a summary of the 1911 census for Brighton, indicating that he lived at 2 North Street, but I cannot find the actual 1911 census to find out who the other people living at this address were and what their relationship to George was. I suspect he may have been lodging at the address as his family was living in Dover at the time.

Could somebody with access to the census please check this out for me?

Many thanks.

Lancashire / Holland/Scott - Prescot
« on: Monday 17 April 17 03:03 BST (UK)  »
I have been asked by a friend to help her with her family tree and we've already hit a brick wall. James Holland married Hannah Scott in Prescot in 1880. They had a daughter, Sarah, a couple of years later.
Hannah would seem to have been born in Prescot in 1860 and there are two possible likely James Hollands born in Prescot, one in 1856 and the other in 1859.
We can find no more information on either of them - no parents' names and, more strangely, no censuses from 1881, 1891 or 1901. Can anybody help, please?

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Lacy Bishop's Waltham
« on: Sunday 02 April 17 05:09 BST (UK)  »
I've hit a brick wall with this family. My 4xGreat-grandfather was James Lacy, born in BW in 1739, married Ann O'Neil in Easton on 5 June 1776 and died in BW on 29 Feb 1808.
I was told, by another descendant, that James' father was John Lacy who was married to Ruth Fry but I'm wondering if there was another generation between James and John - Wm Lacy, married to Mary Toothaker. Does anybody have any information on this family, please?
