Glamorganshire / Lymmer and Porth Parish
« on: Monday 07 December 09 08:50 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I'm trying to do a bit more of a friend's tree for him for Christmas as he has hit a brick wall.

His Grandfather's marriage cert in 1905 says the groom Robert Palmer's residence was 'Parish of Lymmer & Porth, Glamorgan', his father was Edward Palmer deceased.

On the 1911 census  Robert said he was born in Pontypridd in 1880 but we can't find him on any other census.

Is the Parish of Lymmer and Porth part of Pontypridd? I have looked on Genuki Glamorgan and can't find it there and the four Pontypridd parishes seem to have different names.

Need a bit of local help with this one please.

Thank you

Armed Forces / Devon Militia
« on: Tuesday 04 August 09 23:24 BST (UK)  »
Seeing as the people here are so helpful I thought I 'd ask about another of my strange lot.

Cornelius Palk who seemingly lived all his life  in Halberton, Devon married Sarah Morrish of Exeter in St Woolos Parish Church, Monmouthshire in 1855. His occupation was Private in Devon Militia.

Where would I look for details of the Militia and what would they have been doing in Wales? More especially why would his wife be in Wales too?  Or am I being dense?? They didn't appear to stay long and were in Halberton the rest of their lives.

Armed Forces / Dublin 1865 - 1886 ish
« on: Monday 03 August 09 09:29 BST (UK)  »
I have a James MIHILL who was a Sapper Royal Engineers in Dublin from about 1865 when he married his wife Emma Zumach in Dublin until around 1881 when Emma remarried. I am unable to find out what happened to James MIHILL and have even searched some of the Royal Engineers documents at Kew.  Is ther any other way I could find out? I know nothing about him other than his father was also James MHILL a painter.

Emma's second husband was George WOODWARD my Great grandfather. George was given as a 'Baker in CTC' or possibly CJC.    His father was also George, a limeburner. The marriage was in Dublin but again I have no other knowledge of him.  The family moved to Birmingham around 1886 and a daughter, my Grandmother, was born in 1887 by which time George seems to have disappeared never to be seen again!

Any ideas how I can take this further. I am unable at present to go to Dublin.

Armed Forces / Uniform photo help please
« on: Sunday 02 August 09 22:42 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

This pic is probably my Grandfather. Can anyone tell me please what the uniform is and why it would have been taken in Dublin when he lived in Birmingham and we have no knowledge of him ever being in Dublin??

Thanks.

FH Documents and Artefacts / Military/Old Photos
« on: Sunday 02 August 09 00:45 BST (UK)  »
I have 2 old photos from around 1910 showing a chap in uniform and one a bit older in civvies. Where can I get these looked at to see what uniform it was and to decide if it is even the same bloke!! One pic was taken in Birmingham the other in Dublin. If it is who we think it it is we have no knowledge of this guy ever being in Dublin so it would help to solve a mystery.

Montgomeryshire / Evan EVANS, miller, Newtown
« on: Sunday 19 April 09 00:20 BST (UK)  »
My Great Grandfather was Evan EVANS a miller who variously said he was born at Abergethy/Newtown/Montgomeryshire depending on which census you read.  His father was also Evan EVANS also a miller. I have no knowledge of any of his family whatsoever other than his father's name on his marriage certificate.

Now with a name like that I can't find any clue as to which of several mine is. I have searched the 1851 census of Newown and there appear to be several.  There are also several born in 1844 with similar father's names.  The place name Abergethy does not appear to exist and I can't find anything similar.

By 1871 Evan jnr was living in Birmingham and went on to have grocer's shops.  The story fed down through the family was that he walked to Birmingham to find work.

He has been my brick wall for over 10 years so anyone's ideas to  help me find the real Evan Evans would be most welcome.

Travelling People / John PENFOLD b1879
« on: Tuesday 07 April 09 18:50 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for this family on 1901 census and before

John Penfold b 1879  in Newton Abbott married an Ellen and had 4 children Mark b 1895, Eliza b 1898, John b 1902, Vashti b 1908. The 1911 census said they had been married 16 years, making them both 15 when they married.

Vashti married Harry Manley in 1928,  the marriage registered in Honiton.

I can not find the right John on any census.  Does anyone know who he is??

Travelling People / ATTEWELL
« on: Tuesday 17 March 09 10:36 GMT (UK)  »
A fellow researcher has sent me fairly conclusive proof that one of my Manleys moved to the USA c 1875.

Amelia (Maily) Manley was the daugher of Henry MANLEY and Matilda WELLS and was born about 1849 in Bridport, Dorset.

In 1871 she was on the census as Amelia Atwell along with John Atwell and 2 children Drusilla and Richard.

She married John ATTEWELL in Sebastian, Arkansas, USA in May 1874, had at least one more child Hester who died aged 2 months in Ridgely, Illinois in 1887 and died herself in 1887 in Ridgely. Newspaper reports of their marriage describe them as Gypsies

John ATTEWELL said he was born in Blackwood, Glamorganshire in 1845.  I have been unable to trace him prior to the 1871 census.

I wondered if anyone else knew of this family.

Travelling People / Anyone use findmypast.com ? Search tip
« on: Thursday 05 March 09 17:55 GMT (UK)  »
I have had some success using the address search feature of the  censuses by typing variously caravan/tent/van/cart in the street section.

Results that then come up are mostly travellers and the like. Occassionally of course you get a 'tent street' and a load of people you dont want but it's worth a try.  Found 2 of mine this morning like that.

I'm possibly repeating something that's already been said  so apologise if I am.
