The Common Room / Genealogical history of the Halliburton family 1983
« on: Sunday 07 July 19 02:39 BST (UK)  »
Can anybody tell me if the version of 1983 has additional information of the Halyburtons from Egliscarnie, Bolton, near Haddington, than in the 1973 edition.
Also does anybody know where this ended up?

the large carton on a dust covered shelf in a basement. In it were hundreds of parchment documents dating from 1567 to the late 1800s. Mrs. King said she got "goose pimples all over" as she read decree after decree: "By the grace of God and Charles II," "By the grace of God and George III," and others. Each was signed and sealed in wax with the Great Seal of Scotland. In one envelope folded like a road map was a 10 foot long legal document dated 15 July, 1544,, in Edinburgh, Scotland, describing the castles, lands and holdings of the Haliburton and Maitland families. The carton contained an amazing genealogy and complete family record, including scores of letters, covering a 300 year span of the two families.

Scotland / Marriage Contract 1652
« on: Monday 16 July 18 03:51 BST (UK)  »
Robert Bennet noted covenator of Chesters was married to Anna Douglas
One source I saw claimed she was a daughter of Archibald Douglas of Cavers and sited a marriage contract of 1652 being signed at `Yearlsyde' (i.e. Earlside)
A Hawick Word Book by Douglas Scott has wrongly it seems named her as Anne daughter of Archibald with Archibald's daughter Elizabeth being married to Sir John Murray of Philiphaugh, most souces have this last couple as John and Anne.? And later he has them correctly identified.
So How do I find a marriage contract from 1652 from Yearlsyde?
Regards Colin

South Africa / Looking for James Goodwin 1868 - 1958
« on: Saturday 02 June 18 07:01 BST (UK)  »
He seems to have served in Roberts Horse and then in the Commander in Chief's Body guard as a Lieutenant and then he was transferred as a Lieutenant to Kitchener's Fighting Scouts
some how he seems to have managed to be back in England and married there 25 July 1900 to Lizzie Hines
There was an excellent article in the Cape Town Family History Society newsletter regarding him, but hoping some listers may have more knowledge about his service or where to find such?

He claimed that he knew Lord Roberts, Lord Kitchener and Cecil John Rhodes.
His sister in England, Aunt Bettie as she was known to the family, was connected to Alfred Beit, and given his connection to Cecil Rhodes, I wonder if it was this connection that saw him going from a private to a Lieutenant in such a brief period, and maybe supports his claims:
That he was ended up in Volksrust, running the town on behalf of the army until peace was declared.
Went to Rhodesia with Rhodes and being given vast tracts of farming land or finding the Wankie coal mines.

He died 1 September 1958, his residence was that of his daughter and son - in - law 74 Prairie Street, Rossettenville, Johannesburg.
The death certificate said he was born 27 Feb 1868 he was married in Harpenden, Hertfordshire, his wife died in June 1952
He had 2 children Irene Elizabeth Suckling and James Earle Goodwin

I am trying to find out if he is the man who was born in England in Herefordshire and was married in 1880 at Hoxton, London to Eliza Jane Goodwin, she returned to England before 1891 when she had two children baptised there.

Wondering if it would be possible for some one to look at this record and see if it has any identifying information. His widow married in 1917 so assume he had died by then?

One reference said that he had been associated with Alfred Beit

Appreciate any help

The Common Room / Divorce and the insane

Wondering if a man was in an insane asylum, if the wife could divorce him to marry someone else, or would she have to wait for him to die?

Roxburghshire / James Douglas of Jedburgh
« on: Friday 15 December 17 01:52 GMT (UK)  »
In the Testamentary papers of Margaret Douglas, daughter of the deceased James Douglas, merchant and provost of Jedburgh, and wife of William Knox, of Mayshiell 29 Mar. 1786.
Her son in law Thomas Pringle, refers to a disposition and deed of settlement dated thirteenth day of July One thousand seven hundred and fourty seven years,  registered in the court books of Jedburgh 5th February 1749, burdened son and Heir John Douglas,  with the payment to the said Margaret Douglas of 100 pounds Sterling,  of additional provision to her over and above what was provided to her by her contract of marriage.
Does anybody know if these records would survive and how and where to obtain copies or typescript.
There seems to be no testamentary papers for either James Douglas or his son John?
There were several James Douglas's in Jedburgh about this time.
Cheers Colin

This Family was from Kolomyya this is from the birth of the daughter in 1909, I think the 1915 date relates to when the parents went through a civil marriage, they were Jewish but the state did not recognize these.
