Dublin / Location of Jessie Hawkins Will (Dublin Pricipal) 1874
« on: Friday 05 December 14 12:17 GMT (UK)  »
Hoping to find that the Will ( it is in the Index) of Jessie Elizabeth Hawkins who died 27 Mar 1874 in Dublin may still exist and not sure where I may find it. Also hoping that it may be available to read online. I'm trying to establish how she may have been related to the Thornberry name mentioned in the Index.
Her address was 119 Lower Baggot Street which in later years I believe to have been a notorious abode.

Could someone advise please.
Many thanks
Llij :) :)

Derbyshire / Peaches Workhouse, Ashbourne ... Unwin born 1857
« on: Tuesday 23 April 13 08:42 BST (UK)  »
I am still trying to obtain more information on my great grandfather CHARLES HENRY UNWIN.
I know that he was born (father unnamed) on 23 Sept 1857, address given as UNION STREET, ASHBOURNE. His mother Annie Unwin of Werrington, Caverswall.
I can find no likely relatives living in Union Street who may have taken Annie in at that time. However, there does seem to be a workhouse  (Peaches Workhouse) in Dig Street at around the time of Charles's birth. Maybe she gave birth here?
Does anyone know if records exsist that may be helpful to me please?
Kind regards
Jill

Cork / HAWKINS in Ireland from 1618 .. Bishops, Barristers and Baronets!
« on: Monday 25 March 13 21:07 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

In the last few months I have been making a fair amount of headway in linking the various Hawkins lines. I hope to tie in the Wicklow, Wexford and Devon ones, soon. Also, the Sir Anthony Hope Hawkins line.
However, I  am still trying to establish the parents of Sir Anthony Hawkins (Clerk of the Peace). I believe he was born in Cork in about 1775 but had several abodes, including Leopardstown, Dublin and London.  He married Ann Hagerty (various spellings) and they lived for a few years in Enniscorthy Castle (around 1803).  I have lots of information on him but cannot confirm parentage. Anthony was given as father on the marriage record my ancestor, Frances Hawkins.

I think the generations fall as follows:

Generation 1
Alderman William Hawkins b 1618 who died 22 Oct 1680. He was the William of Rathfriland Castle which was destroyed after the 1641 rebellion. He was successor after the Magennis family. Given the lands as a reward for his military achievements in the Civil War. He was also of London. He married .. Grace Thwaites. Their children were:

Generation 2
1.. John.. 1644 - 1689 buried Drumballyroney. Married Mary Johnstone from Gill
Hall Dronmore. The family inherited the Gilford Estate and built the Manor  House at Lessize, this
passed to granddaughter Theodosia Hawkins Magill (1743-1817) who was Countess of Clanwilliam. Theodosia married Sir John Meade, Earl of Clanwilliam.

2.. Elizabeth

3.. Mary b 1659 married Ephraim Thwaites, probably cousin.

(also generation 2)
4.. William 1670 - 23 Nov 1736.  Ulster King of Arms from 1698 until death. Lived Dublin. Married.. Elizabeth Mutlow.

Generation 4
John .. 1701 - 14 Aug 1758  married ..  Mary Magill had son:

Generation 5
James..   1724- 23 Jun 1807 (Right Rev) who became Bishop of Raphoe. He married .. Catherine Keane of Plymouth (sister of Sophie who married Rev George Hamilton of Ossery) had  son:

Generation 6
John ..  1 Aug 1757 - 11 May 1841 Reverend. Studied Trinity College MA. Lived ..The Hall Donegal. Married Anne Montgomery.  Additional information, after the birth date of the Sir Anthony that I'm hoping to find is:   Son of John b 1757 was:

James Hawkins .. 9 Jan 1797 -25 Mar 1880 (Barrister) Married Anne Isabella Law (b 1780) James and Isabella had:

James Staples Hawkins .. b 1837 d 9 Jun 1909  Justice of the Peace, who married Letitia Georgiana Brooke. Their son:
Herbert Reginald Montgomary Hawkins (Capt) 1869 -1946.

In case anyone needs the offspring of John Hawkins and Catherine Keane they are as follows:

John 1752, .. Clerk in Holy Orders, Killebeg married Anne Montgomery (already mentioned above).
William b 1759 d 1836 married Constantia Drought.
James Hawkins Whitshed.  Baronet of Killinecarrick. Admiral of the Fleet. Assumed Whitshed name, in accordance with mother's Will. Lived Scotland (3 years) Studied Astronomy at Oxford.Travelled to Denmark and Russia. Commander in Chief, Cork. Made Baronet 16 May 1834... Married Sophia Henrietta Bentinck 1766 -1852. Sophia came from a very nobel lineage.
Thomas .. in Holy Orders. Dean of Clonfort.
Francis ..   married Helen Barrington
Elizabeth ..  married Benjamin Ball
Catherine .. married John Puget.

Much of my information has come from Burkes peerage etc. and other established sources but some is from gathered notes on Irish visits, other family histories, and online archives.

So If anyone can help link Anthony to his rightful roots,  which I believe is somewhere above!
Or if you have any useful alterations or guidance ... I should be really grateful.

Kind regards
Jill

Dublin / Hyland in Kingstown, Dublin about 1845
« on: Thursday 28 February 13 13:32 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,
Still looking for the roots of my Heeland/Hyland  (William, a joiner born 1826 and Mary Bridget possibly McWay) family, in Ireland.
They arrived in Tunstall, Staffordshire area before the birth of their son David in 1847.
They had three daughters, which census states all born in Ireland, Bridget 1842, Julia 1845 and Mary 1846.
It did occur to me that the third daughter, may have been born there, while they were on route to England (potato famine time) and that perhaps they were not a Dublin family, merely passing through.
On the 1871 census in England it states that Julia was born in Kingstown, Dublin.
I have been unable to find a marriage for William or births for the daughters, could anyone help please?  Any thoughts welcome.
Thanks,
Kind regards
Jill

Staffordshire / Willaim and Annie Scott, 44 Tontine Street.. from USA
« on: Friday 16 November 12 09:18 GMT (UK)  »
Wondered if anyone may be able to point me towards records for two folk born in US, please?

On the 1891 census they were with their widowed mother Annie (a fish dealer) living at 44 Tontine Street, Stoke.

On the 1901 census Annie (her mother now running a coffee house at the same address)  is described as a British Subject.
Would there be any records showing her request and details of the British Citizenship?

I can't find a date for the return to England, of the family.
Mother Annie (nee Unwin) was born in Hanley.
Kind regards
Jill

Derbyshire / Removal Order for Charles UNWIN, Ticknall
« on: Friday 12 October 12 09:00 BST (UK)  »
I have discovered a Removal Order for Charles Unwin (a butcher), his wife Sophia and children Charles, Edward, Mary and Elizabeth. It was placed in 1834. They were removed from Ticknall to Repton (about 4 miles away).

Does anyone have access to this record that would give a reason for the removal, please?

The family were in St Werburgh by the 1841 census.

Kind regards Jill

Staffordshire / Scott/Unwin, Stoke area, Tombstone or Obituary records.
« on: Sunday 24 June 12 10:03 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
Just hoping that someone may have access to tombstone, memorial, or obituary  records for the Stoke on Trent area?
I am hoping that Annie Scott (nee Unwin)/ born about 1840,  formerly coffee house keeper and wet fish dealer,  who died in 1910 at 33 Nicholl's Street, will show up and give me additional information, on the family. Her late husband,  George (a grocer), I believe died  12 Jun 1900 at 26 Globe Street.
They had a son William John (mentioned in Annie's Will) and daughter Annie.

Kind regards
from Soggy Sussex
