Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / What's the occupation?
« on: Wednesday 24 November 10 13:57 GMT (UK)  »
Chatters,

After the details of a person's burial in 1700 was his occupation/status or whatever.  There were other examples of it in the same burial records.

Any ideas as to what the word is please?

Chatters,

If your forebears were methodists from the Dursley area you might find my recent posting in resources illuminating.

Good luck.

Chatters,

I transcribed these over five years ago and until just now, I thought I'd lost the floppy they were on.

I wish all church records were as informative.

Good hunting

Gloucestershire / Old maps
« on: Sunday 14 November 10 11:55 GMT (UK)  »
Chatters all,

On an old map from http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html I noticed that the surveyor had given the types of some trees!   One way of keeping so busy that ones job is safe?

But seriously, the maps are super - have a look for your birthplace 100 years ago perhaps.

Chatters,

Using the LDS library catalogue to find an LDS film number for a particuler parish - St Mary de Lode say - in Gloucester is not possible (perhaps they do not update the catalogue very often) and one might assume that the LDS has not filmed any of its records.

However, the LDS has filmed the records, so how can you find the film number so as to hire and search it at an LDS FHC?

Go to the Pilot site and look for a common surname - Davis say - in Gloucester, Gloucestershire etc. and you'll be given quite a few.

To find the film you need you'll have to eyeball the list for a Davis baptized  in the subject parish in the particular time window.   Checking the entry's details you'll see a film and batch number.

The film's details can be found in the LDS library catalogue and the batch number entered at any parish in the Hugh Wallis site (no surname) will give ALL the entries in it.

Example:- Found in Pilot: a  Michael  Davis  bap/birth 4 Dec 1793 in St Mary de Lode.  Info. from Film 855623 in Batch I020653.   I do not know if a double extraction procedure was used.

Checking the LDS library catalogue gives more films of St Mary de Lode records and using the batch on the Hugh Wallis site shows it only contains 29 extracted entries.

The Common Room / LDS films

Chatters,

Arranroots suggested posting my GLS message nationwide:-

Any LDS films shown in the LDS library catalogue q.v., can now be ordered and paid for on-line by credit/debit card.

You will need to create an account - see https://film.familysearch.org/

When the film is despatched to your nearby LDS FHC, you will be sent an e-mail as will the FHC's personnel.

You then have three months for film searching at the FHC.

Gloucestershire / Freemen of Gloucester 1641 - 1838: Completed

Chatters,

A few years ago a GLS researcher gave me the book shown in the attachment because she had finished with it.  She asked me to find it a good home one day so I'm hoping to do that now.

In exchange for the book I ask for the cost of the postage and packing to be given to the Salvation Army's Haiti Earthquake appeal.  The book weighs 2 pounds 5 ounces so any Post Office will give you the approximate postage cost info. and the price of a Jiffy bag in which it will be enclosed.

If you are interested please contact me by P.M.

Regards

Chas
