Kent / Alfred Wilson, civil engineer
« on: Wednesday 28 August 19 11:41 BST (UK)  »
Alfred Wilson (b1841) was a civil engineer based in Bexley, Kent. Apparently he designed something and there is a plaque commemorating it. He was in Bexley 1871/1881. Please can anyone help me discover what and where?
Many thanks

Sussex / Westergate near Chichester
« on: Wednesday 28 August 19 11:33 BST (UK)  »
The Wilson family moved to Westergate at the end of the 19th century. I have the census records, but would appreciate any trade directory entries. The men were market gardeners and the women ran a private school.
Many thanks

Technical Help / TalkTalk
« on: Wednesday 30 November 16 17:48 GMT (UK)  »
I don't think anyone can help, but I need to explode somewhere and rootschatters are good at listening (or rather reading). Having spent hours complaining about Talk Talk, the end of my contract has at last arrived. However, I thought about it and decided that I would continue with them as I could not face a change of email address. I received an email informing me that the cost of my package was to be increased. I was not amused and as I get very cross on the phone I used 'live chat' to complain (hoping for a reduction). After many minutes of typing I was eventually informed that Talk Talk have discontinued their  broadband only service (from tomorrow!!). My email did not state this it just said that the cost of my package was to increase. The agent has logged my complaint and someone is to contact me. I have checked the available services in my area and no-one provides a broadband only service. I have line rental from BT. I only use a pay as you go mobile phone for emergencies, I do not watch much television and I only use my landline when I have to so I do not need a package. I use BT 1571 as an answer phone as I have a phobia of phones and only answer it if I am expecting a call. I rely on email for communication. I really feel up the creek without a paddle. If I had been told that my broadband only service was to be discontinued I would have had time to explore my options, rather than throw a panic as I am now.

Is it wishful thinking or did James bequeath the farm to his brother Edward?
I would be grateful for the opinion of an unbiased pair of eyes.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Marriage register
« on: Monday 01 February 16 08:54 GMT (UK)  »
The FindMyPast transcriber read this as Oldluck, but can anyone suggest something different. The wedding was in Culmington (Shropshire) in 1686. Could it be Ludlow? I can find a baptism in Ludlow which would fit, but the more I look at it, the more doubts I have. Any suggestions gratefully accepted and I will scour my Shropshire maps.

The Common Room / Medical help needed
« on: Saturday 30 January 16 17:02 GMT (UK)  »
Whilst researching the history of Bridgnorth I came across this:
https://archive.org/details/b21522704
It gives an account of the weather which is what attracted me in the first place, but I am intrigued to know what the particular ‘ague’ would be called today. I have been reading about miasma theory and germ theory, but they only describe the way in which the disease is spread. Is there anyone with medical knowledge who could enlighten me please?

Shropshire / Bridgnorth hospitals
« on: Saturday 16 January 16 16:52 GMT (UK)  »
My 4x great grandmother (Hannah Gregory) was buried at St. Leonard’s Church, Bridgnorth on 14th May 1837. Her address is given as ‘hospital’. My query is which hospital? As far as I can see there are two possibilities – Palmers Hospital and Bridgnorth Infirmary. Palmers Hospital is located in St. Leonard’s churchyard and I believe was founded for the relief of poor widows. The infirmary was opened in 1836 and had 8 beds. Another entry on the same page as my ancestor gives an address as ‘Hospital Churchyard’ so that for this lady her address is clear. Bearing this in mind am I correct to assume that she died in the infirmary?  (Hannah was a widow). Does anyone know anything about Bridgnorth hospitals or can point me in the right direction to find out? Any suggestions gratefully received.

Shropshire / Bridgnorth burial
« on: Wednesday 13 January 16 17:32 GMT (UK)  »
The transcription of the entry below gives the burial of John Corbett as being on the 6th December 1694 at St. Leonard’s Church Bridgnorth. I read it as John Corbett his wife buried December 6th. However, does this mean John or his wife? Can anyone enlighten me please?

Technical Help / Microsoft Office
« on: Wednesday 30 December 15 20:11 GMT (UK)  »
One day I might find the time to get back into family history mode!! However:
I've been cursing the new laptop all day and tonight I attacked rather than thinking first. Stupid!! I ought to have known better. I installed Office 2010 and then wondered why when it appeared to install, it wouldn't run. I have now found that there is the new version installed waiting for me to pay for it after the trial period. How can I sort this out? Can I just uninstall the new version? I am hoping that Office 2010 will run, but it doesn't stand a chance with the new files in place.
