Down / McAvoy family, County Down HELP Please!
« on: Thursday 26 May 11 20:33 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

This is my first foray into hunting for Irish ancestors, so any help or advice would be hugely appreciated.

So far I have traced the family I am researching in the 1901 and 1911 Census returns for ireland and the info I have is the following:

1911 -
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Down/Magherally/Tullyrain__Tullylish_P__/212824

In the 1901 Census the family from Henry as far as his son of the same name are listed (all around 10 yrs younger of course) and as visitors there is a Maggie McAlinden (margaret from 1911?) aged 10 and a Mary McAlinden aged 20

I was hoping somebody would be able to help me in tracing this family further back? Where would I start considering there are no earlier census returns to search. And how would I narrow down where within Co. Down / Armagh each was born (online)?

Any help or advice would be invaluable.

Many thanks,

Karen

Canada Lookup Request / Lookup request for Canadian birth / marriage info please :o)
« on: Thursday 28 April 11 19:07 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

This is the first time I have used this site for anything other than British family tree research but I have been asked by a friend to try to get some info so here goes.

I should say right off that I have my friends permission to give her name as she is in fact trying to get the reference for her own birth registration (!) as well as details of her mother's maiden name (although I assume that the latter would be recorded on her birth certificate if she is ever able to obtain it - she has written to the Canadian department responsible and they have written back asking her for her mother's maiden name of which she is uncertain although she believes it to be a Polish name along the lines of PERZAK / PORZAK / PORZUK / PERZUK)

Anyway her name is (*) and she was born on the 1954 in Toronto, Ontario in Canada. her mother's name: L Greenberg nee PORZAK (or alternate spelling?) who she believes was born in Saskatchewan, Canada.

Any help obtaining her birth registration reference or her mother's marriage / birth details or advice on how to go about finding them would be hugely appreciated...i have tried the Library edition of Ancestry.com to no avail.

Many thanks,

Karen

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Help! Dairies in Hackney 1950
« on: Wednesday 06 October 10 14:20 BST (UK)  »
Hello everyone,

I'm hoping somebody has access to a Business Directory for Hackney / East London for around 1950 as I am trying to find any information on my grandfather who worked as a milkman in 1950 in Hackney. The only other information I have for him (apart from his name) is his address in 1950 from the electoral register. I am hoping that if I contact all of the Dairies which served the Hackney area in that era I may get lucky and find his employer and any info they may still have in their archives. I have already contacted Dairy Crest (which was United Dairies)  and  The Co-op. I just wondered if anyone could look in the directory for any other Dairies of the time.

Many thanks,

Karen  :)

Ireland / Advice needed please :o)
« on: Friday 16 October 09 00:40 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I'm totally new to Irish ancestor hunting. I have a grandfather whom I believe to have come from Ireland to England in the very early 1950s (he was not in Hackney, London where he subsequently lived, in 1949 to register to vote but was there in the 1950-51 registers).

I was wondering if there are passenger lists for ships which sailed from Ireland to England in the '50s? Also, how many ports in Ireland there were in 1950 from which ships sailed to England? If there are lists are they searchable online? Any other ideas for how to go about obtaining any info other than his presence on the electoral registers for 1950 (which apart from his name and the names of the two people living with him who share a surname is all I have on him to date)?

Any help would be hugely appreciated as, like I said, I'm new to searching for Irish ancestors.

Many thanks,

Karen  :)

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / COMPLETED 1861 Census help please :o)
« on: Friday 02 October 09 13:04 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I would very much appreciate help locating two people in the 1861 census.

The first is Robert Samuel GODDARD who would have been about 13 in 1861 (in 1871 he was, I believe, mistranscribed as ALBERT Samuel GODDARD aged 23 although in all other census returns he is ROBERT) he has various places of birth recorded in different census returns (1871 = Mddx, St. Pancras, 1881 = St. Giles, Mddx, 1891 = London).

The second is Eliza or Elizabeth HORSLEN who would also have been around 13 yrs old in 1861 and has her birth place given as Essex, Hockley in 1871 although I believe she died before 1878 when her widower husband remarried. She married Robert GODDARD in 1869 (May 2nd) at St. Pancras, Old Church (Thank you, Tati!)

Any help would be hugely appreciated, many thaks.

Hello,

I would like some help finding an Elsie May Fuller b. London c1896 (she died in Bethnal Green 1982 aged 86) she eventually married a John McKenzie but I doubt that will help as she was only about 4 or 5 in 1901. Her mother's maiden name was Bristow but again I wonder how that can help  ::)
