Hello,

I have been working on the family of an old friend and found them in Cardiganshire but in the 1901 census I found an oddity.

The Father David EVANS is there with his second wife and with 10+ children.

Nellie EVANS born 1889 Meifod, Montgomeryshire, Wales
and TWO 'Step children'
Arthur Griffiths born 1886 Meifod, Montgomeryshire, Wales
Jessie Griffiths born 1887 Meifod, Montgomeryshire, Wales

These two children have the full rights of direct family Children (they are not listed as servants like some of the others) so what is going on here?

Any thoughts appreciated?

Thanks

Dorset Lookup Requests / "Chilham"? in Dorset ? Edwin Peach 1861 Census
« on: Wednesday 20 January 16 14:13 GMT (UK)  »
Yes, its another puzzle, sorry :-(

.....Hello Fellow Roots Chatters,

I am trying to 'fettle' the diminishing memory of an old friend whose adoptive Family ancestors seem to have come from Dorset and include a mysterious Edwin Peach. It seems to be doing some good.... fingers crossed. EDwins parentage isn't clear.... he may have been the son of Robert or of his daughter Sarah?

The Mystery is Edwin Peach his Gt Grandfather - finding his parentage and birthplace which seem to vary on Censuses. Some records showing him seem to be extensive but are confusing too!

1851 East Chelborough, Dorset... could this be "Chilham"? aged 8
1861 Martock, Somerset says born "Chilham, Dorset" aged 18
1871 North Peterson says or looks like "Halford" - enumerators lines!!! aged 27
1881 North Petherton, Somerset - looks like Stafford Somerset....38
1891 North Petherton, Somerset - says Martock aged 48
1901 North Petherton says born Dorset aged 60
1911 Holford, Bridgewater

His occupations are somewhat more consistent:
@Dairy House, North Peterton 1871
@Witts, North Peterton , Somerset 1881,
Dairyman @ Church Rd North Petherton 1891;
Farmer 1901
Farmer Glamorgan 1911

He died and was buried in Williton, Somerset in 1926.

So - we know Rapisham was known as Ransom - anyone know if Chelborough was "Chillham"

One more query - why would he name his son as Tom Hamilton Peach? I can see no connection with that name in the family?

Any thoughts or local knowledge most welcome!

« on: Friday 12 September 14 12:41 BST (UK)  »
Hello Fellow 'Chat fans!

I am looking for Bill HURD who would have been in his 60s when I last knew him in Harborne Birmingham. He was a Golfer - a member of HGC. I think he lived in Court Oak Road. I also seem to recall he was a soldier - My Dad mentioned him as Major or Colonel.

Any help most welcome - I am trying to help the Club find out more about him for Memories!

Glamorganshire Lookup Requests / Daniel Walters and Family in Nantyffyllon 1916-1938
« on: Thursday 13 December 12 11:24 GMT (UK)  »
Hi fellow Rootschatters,

I am trying to put together the natural family of a 75 year old lady who found out late in life she was adopted as a baby.

Her mother, when discharged with her baby to a London Workhouse after giving birrth recorded her fathers name as Daniel Walters and wrote his address as Hill Road and the writing isnt clear - it looks like Nanty Gallow, but since her birth was recorded in Nantyffyllon I suspect its one and the same.

Does anyone have access to any records that might help us to track down her family - her Mum was Elizabeth Ann née Rees.

Any help at all would be welcome - she says shed be delighted to find she has Welsh cousins!

Thanks for your time and help

Hello Rootschatter friends,

I have had a new challenge from an elderly friend who found out late in life that she had been adopted.

She has found a deal about her real origins but came up against a brick wall or three and didnt really know what she could rely upon.

We have found our way through some but are stuck to know how her Mum came to be in Polar Institution before and after her birth in 1937.

Does any kind soul have access to the Institutions records or Electoral Registers for the 30's?

If so could you polease see if you can find anythin about Mildred Walters for me and her 75 year old natural daughter?

Thanks in anticipation ;-)

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / BIRTH: Hill, Esther c 1897 London area OR?
« on: Monday 09 August 10 15:37 BST (UK)  »
Hi fellow chatters!

Esther Hill was the daughter of Edward James Hill and Emma Grace Hill, neé Parrington.

She appears on the 1901 C at her grandparents in S Norwood / Croydon with Mum, where she is aged 4. Suggesting a birth date of between April 1896 and March 1897...?

E J Hill and E G Parrington married on 24 Sep 1896 at St. John's Church, Kensel Green, Chelsea, London. They lived at 26, Droop Street for a time.

There must have been a problem because on 10th February 1901 Emma Grace married again, in Chelsea to another man with whom she stayed and had a number of children.

In an unnamed 10 year later record ;-)  Emma states that she had 6 live births but only 5 remain, so perhaps I should be looking for a death date for Esther somewhere between 1901 and 1911.

Esthers Dad was still around at both dates a waiter living in a Pub in one and a waiter, visitor, in West Ham later. James claims still to be married in each case.

I have been unable t find Esther's birth or death. Can any kind soul help. Emma and her second child moved north to Warwickshire and later Daventry.

If any kind person can crack this one, Emma's Grandson would be very grateful.

Thanks

Warwickshire Lookup Requests / Baptism Hillmorton C 1901 Flavell OR Hill, Evelyn?
« on: Saturday 07 August 10 18:25 BST (UK)  »
Hi fellow Rootschatters,

Last week I lodged an enquiry here - about a parent of this young lady - which seemed to have tickled everyones fancy ;-) I hope this one will too!

I am looking for a record of the birth or baptism of a young lady who was born at or around the turn of the century.

Her Mum MAY have been married twice... to different men... to the second when the first was still alive...! But thas almost another story ;-)

At the time of the 1901 Census, having married her second husband in February - Mr F S Flavell (from the respected family of Upper Street, Hilmorton - we have them there in 1881 and 1891)  Mum - Emma - was visiting her parents in Croydon, with her 4 year old daughter Esther Hill.

Evelyn Annie was born in late 1900 or early 1901, one family rumour says Jan 31st, but we can find no solid evidence of it.

We suspect that she may have been registered as Evelyn Annie Hill and baptised as Evelyn Annie Flavell but we dont know. We know that in 1911 they were in Daventry.

Does any kind soul have access to the Hillmorton, Warks church records for this time and could they very kindly look up this name to see if a Birth or baptism or either is recorded there. We have been unable to find a name change or anything else and the one Evelyn Annie recorded at this time was regd in  Rugby and the Certificate, very disappointingly for us, shows a totally different pair of parents.... unless???

Any help as ever would be very much appreciated by her great nephews other half who is being driven round the proverbial in trying to solve all these convolutions ;-)

and yours truly...

The Common Room / Husband sentenced to Penal Servitude - a right to remarry?
« on: Thursday 29 July 10 10:45 BST (UK)  »
Hi Friends,

I have a new puzzle for fellow Chatters!

A lady marries in 1896 and then for a second time in 1901.

She has a non-usual and very clear name cited precisely for both marriages which took place in C of E Church.

Both marriages appear on FREEBMD and both certificates seem to be in order - married name is listed as surname on second cert!

There is no sign of Hubby 1's death in the meantime.

There is no mention of them on FMPs Divorce list.

There is an Old Bailey report of a man of the right name being found guilty of Arson in the right time scale and being committed to 10 years penal Servitude.

My Q...

Would commitment be a justification for dissolution of the marriage

Where can we find records of dissolutions and or annullments of marriages.

She may simply be a bigamist... but it seems never to have been pursued by the Law.

Her second marriage took place in Feb 1901 and she had a baby with the new mans surname in May 1901... sounds like desertion?

Any thoughts would be appreciated ;-)

Colin
