Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Place of Birth
« on: Wednesday 06 October 21 23:43 BST (UK)  »
Greetings!

I've been going back and looking over some miscellaneous records that I had saved a while back and came across one birth certificate in particular that has left me confused.

The birth certificate in question is from Knoydart in 1860, and try as I might I just can't quite figure out what the specific place of birth says. I'm pretty familiar with the area in question. It was and still is a remote, out of the way area and I'm familiar with many of various names of old settlements and shielings that are scattered along the coastline. However, I'm unaware of anywhere that matches what appears to be written here.

It looks like it says Inveryorkel, but a quick google search brings up zero results for that. I thought perhaps it could have been Inveroykel, but that is approx 150 miles away and nowhere near Knoydart. The only name that is even remotely close would be Inverguseran, which is on the Knoydart Peninsula, but I'm almost positive that is not what this says.

Appreciate anyone's thoughts or input on this!

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / dating and restoration pretty please
« on: Thursday 18 February 10 23:47 GMT (UK)  »

Hello all,

Attached is a photograph of a mystery lady, the younger woman on the right, who may or may not be a relative of mine. I think that its possibly a great-great-great aunt of mine who married in London in 1886, although I could be mistaken as the only link really is that marriage was in London, as was the studio in which this photograph was taken. I'd also be interested to see what anyone can do restoration wise as I have neither the skill nor the time to do it any justice.

Many thanks in advance,

Ceitidh.

US Lookup Requests / Mary MacMaster
« on: Friday 05 February 10 20:16 GMT (UK)  »

Hello all,

I am looking for more information on a Mary MacMaster [or McMaster, its interchangeable] who according to US census records was born in New York around 1911-1912. The census records do not specify where in New York she was born. Her parents were Angus MacMaster and Hanna Larson; Angus was from Scotland and Hanna was from Sweden - they were married on April 4th 1910 in Manhattan County, New York. Basically, the only information I have about Mary is from the 1920 and 1930 US census', I have failed to find her thereafter but it is entirely likely that she married and thus changed her name. I believe that Angus and Hanna both died in the 1950's in Los Angeles, I wonder if perhaps this was where Mary was living as it is a long way to move.

I have looked on Ancestry and come up with nothing, but I wonder if any kind soul can direct me to any other online resources or lend any advice/suggestions.

Many Thanks,

Ceitidh.

United States of America / Montana death certificate.
« on: Monday 17 August 09 10:00 BST (UK)  »
I have managed to locate from the Death Indexes available on Ancestry, a possible date of death for an ancestor of mine who has been eluding me for quite some time now. The information available from the index is minimal however and I was wondering how I would go about trying to obtain a death certificate for this person? I have tried both vitalcheck.com and the Montana Office of Vital Statistics, both without any success. I wondered if anyone could enlighten me further or point me in the right direction as to what to try next? I live in Scotland, so its a little confusing and frustrating sometimes trying to do this online!

Thanks very much in advance!

Durham / Where to begin?
« on: Tuesday 12 May 09 08:34 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,

Having successfully traced my Scottish family back as far as seems possible at the moment, I feel its now time to pay some attention to my Grandmother's elusive family. She was Elizabeth Jeanette Hadlow, born in South Shields on August 9th 1936, and her parents were John Hadlow and Mary Bailey. Sadly, my Grandmother died shortly before I was born and I know very, very little about her family. She married my Grandfather, John Cameron MacMaster in 1955, I forget the exact date.

I'm very familiar with the Scottish resources and records available, but I'm less familiar with whats available when it comes to the English records. I would ideally like to find out more about Elizabeth's parents, but am unsure where is best to start. Can any kind soul point me in the right direction? Any advice etc would also be gladly welcomed!

Many Thanks,

Ceitidh.

Occupation Interests / Donald Bain MRCVS
« on: Monday 09 March 09 14:15 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I'm hoping someone will be able to give me some guidance regarding an ancestor of mine, one Donald Bain. Donald was born and bred in Waternish, Skye and there was always an old story in the family that he became a vet. The story went that his father had to sell one of his cows in order to afford to send his eldest son off with a pair of new trousers! It wasn't until I received an old notebook that belonged to one of Donald's nephews, that it was confirmed by way of an address entered in the book, that he had in fact been a vet. What i'm curious about, is whether there are any existing resources available that would enable me to find out when/where Donald qualified as a veterinary surgeon, a sort of historical register of some kind?

Thankyoo.

London and Middlesex / Looking for 1886 Marriage.
« on: Monday 29 September 08 09:43 BST (UK)  »

Hello,

I'm wondering if any kind souls can offer me any advice/assistance in trying to track down the marriage of one of my ancestors. The family that I am researching are Scottish, so i'm not very familiar with the use of the English records.

I'm struggling to find a marriage for one of my Scottish ancestors who, according to her daughter's birth certificate, married in London. There is no further information on the certificate, nothing to specify which part of London she and her husband were married in. All I have to go on is the very limited information on the birth certificate of her youngest daughter, who was born in Glasgow. I've attatched an image from the certificate. According to the birth certificate, Jessie MacMaster [3x Great Aunt] married Philip Markey on July 16th in London, England.

Is there any way that I am likely to be able to locate a certificate for this lady? I have had a look on Ancestry at the BDM and have come up with nothing, I'm just not very sure where to look next!

Help!

Scotland / Missing: Ann MacMaster.
« on: Monday 08 September 08 23:10 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,

I'm wondering/hoping if someone may be able to offer some advice as to how would be best to proceed in the search for one of my ancestors. The person in question is one Ann MacMaster born on January 21st 1871, daughter of Ronald and Mary Cameron MacMaster. Born in Knoydart, Ann appears on only one census record, the 1881 census where she is ten years old.

I am really struggling to find any further sign of her after this. I have searched deaths on SP between 1881 and 1891 and have come up with nothing. I've searched Scottish Marriages on SP between these dates and a little further on, and again have come up with nothing. The way I see it, these are the possibilities:

* Ann moved out of Scotland to live elsewhere.
* Ann emigrated and married someone in her new home.
* Ann married someone and then emigrated.
* Ann died in another country.

What i'm really struggling with is how to go about searching for her now. I don't know who or where she married, and if she even married at all for that matter. I also don't know where she went to, if she indeed did leave Scotland, however I am assuming that thats the case due to her seeming disappearance from the records.

Any idea's anyone?

Ta muchly in advance!

Inverness / Knoydart Burial Grounds.
« on: Wednesday 20 August 08 22:59 BST (UK)  »

I have some ancestor's who lived in the Knoydart area; some along Loch Hourn and some who lived along the Sound of Sleat and Loch Nevis. What i'm trying to establish is the possible burial grounds in which these people may have been buried. I know how remote this particular area was/is and sort of assumed that the burial areas would be used for people over quite a wide area.

I have a number of people whose place of death is Barisdale Bay and Rhunival, both on Loch Hourn. These date from 1855 to 1926. Likewise, a number of my ancestor's died in Inverguseran and Airor; these dating from 1855 up until 1908. My 4 x Great Grandmother died in Inverguseran in 1856, the burial place listed on her death certificate was Kilchoan.

I'm planning a trip up to Knoydart in a few weeks and was wondering if anyone knows of the likely burial grounds for these areas? I've visited the area a couple of times before and I know just how remote this area was/is. I'm assuming that due to this, its likely that one or two burial grounds would have served the areas in question?

Many thanks in advance!
