« on: Tuesday 04 March 08 14:19 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

No idea where to post this, trying to locate the meaning of the surname BAMSEY and how it could also have been spelt over time to try and find out the origins.

Many thanks.

Devon Completed Lookup Requests / FOUND: War medal documentation for OLIVER
« on: Thursday 12 July 07 11:21 BST (UK)  »
Had a phone call from Tescos in Honiton yesterday as some documentation was found in their photocopier.

If anyone knows anyone who has lost anything to do with war medals for the name OLIVER recently please contact Tescos Honiton. The number for tescos is 0800 505555, 9am to 6pm Monday to Saturday.

The kind lady there was going through all the Oliver's in the phone book trying to find the owner when she called me.

I hope these find their owner soon!

World War One / Searching for regiments
« on: Sunday 01 July 07 14:14 BST (UK)  »
I have this information on my grandfather about his role in WW1:

Fought at Flanders Belgium during WW1.
Awarded the Victory and British medals (Roll=RGA/141B, Page=4048)
Corp: RGA
Rank: Gunner
Reg No.: 78234
Catalogue Ref: WO/372/22

As I can't find his death certificate is there any more info I can find using any of the above information?

This is the first relative that I have knowledge on fighting in one of the wars and this is a completely new area to me.

Devon Lookup Requests / WOODCOCK, Torquay/Torbay abt 1969
« on: Sunday 01 July 07 14:12 BST (UK)  »
I've been trying to locate the death of my grandfather, Celestine Cyril Woodcock so I can order the death certificate and try to get hold of his war records during WW1.

I know he was buried in Torquay (only just found this out) and I've searched on FreeBMD, Ancestry and FamilySearch to no avail.

If someone is able to help track him down I'd be extremely grateful.

Devon / Advice required
« on: Sunday 17 June 07 17:39 BST (UK)  »
After tracing the Harris' in my tree (grandmother's side) I've taken them through Oxford, London, Wales and then back here in Devon. As it happens the location in Devon happens to be the same city my sister lives in which means I travel there regularly - Plymouth! I've even got the area of Plymouth, Stoke Damerel.

I also know that the husband (my GtGtGtGrandfather) was a confectioner in 1851 (master of 3 men - employer?) and was born 1786.

I've never visited anywhere before to research anything and am really after some advice like things to take, what to look for (and maybe ask for!) and those sort of things.

Many thanks.

The Common Room / Unable to read address

The address is in Boston, Lincs and I can't read where it is!

Does the schedule mean the house number?

The Common Room / What's wrong with my search?
« on: Saturday 16 June 07 12:13 BST (UK)  »
I'm on FamilySearch.org and having never (ever!) figured out how to do an exact search I thought I'd ask for help.

The attached GIF is a grab of my search criteria stating:

you must fill in only first name and last name or last name only

I have filled in only first name and last name only - what's up?

World War One / Medal Cards
« on: Friday 15 June 07 20:17 BST (UK)  »
I've read the info page on National Archives and am still a bit confused.

1. Under "Remakes" I've got "K.1880" like a lot of others have. I know that my relative came home from WW1 (otherwise I wouldn't be here)
2. My relative was from Birmingham yet the corp has "Bedford R" and "Essex" - does this mean this isn't my relative?
3. Under "Victory" and "Bedford R" I've got a "+" (plus) symbol with 4 dots - does this mean anything?

Many thanks.

World War One / Royal Fusiliers/Uniform identification
« on: Friday 15 June 07 19:47 BST (UK)  »
Hi, with the help of Rambler I've downloaded a medal card for who I believe could be one of my grandfather's brothers.

Since I have his corp, rank and regiment number is there any further I can go with this information? Is there anywhere I can lookup someone using the information to see where they came from or the like?
