Scotland / Jonah Nicholson or McWhirter family
« on: Friday 13 February 15 08:31 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
I wonder if there is anyone who can help me elaborate on the family-dates-places etc. of Jonah Nicholson and his family?
or indeed the McWhirters?

I descend from the McWhirter family and can only get back to John McWhirter who married Mary Nicholson daughter of Jonah (born 1726) and his wife Mary Carruthers.

The only leads from there are that he married Mary on the 3rd or 31st July 1756 according to Parish records
he was a Tobacconist and Admitted Burgess of Dumfries 9th January 1797

Died 01 July 1780 age 54  Dumfries?

Any help much appreciated

The Common Room / Marriage Mix Up?
« on: Wednesday 27 April 11 22:38 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone can help with this marriage mix up  :-\
My problem is that I have two entries of Marriage for Frederic William Barton born Etchingham Sussex
Marriage 1901 Jan - March Volume: 2a Page: 389  in Croydon, Greater London
it would appear that his wife was either Emily Kent or Emily Mary Tuckey as they both have this same date, Volume and page no

from 1901 Census I know his wife's name is Emily - from 1911 Census she is Emily Mary born Hillmorton Warwickshire abt. 1872 both are on members trees at Ancestry  ???
Is sending for certificates the only way of finding out for sure?

Thank you

Other Countries / Hearsey/Salmon family Hon East India Co
« on: Tuesday 03 February 09 13:24 GMT (UK)  »
I have an account of the tragic death of Miss Marian Salmon (below) The Hearsey family and William Broome Salmon were all well connected to the H.I.E.C. but were originally from England with other family members here.

My Query is that I have never been able to find an account/report of this death in newspapers or Gazettes - have I been looking in the wrong place or was it common for news of this kind not to reach home?

The tragic journey began in the rains if 1827 when William and Marion Salmon and their daughter Marian met Mrs Salmon's brother John Hearsey in the Garhwal Hills of Ramnee. Mrs and Miss Salmon were ill at the start of the trip but soon recovered.
On the return journey in crossing the Nundakme River the log bridge broke in two, Marian Salmon and Sir John Hearsey were dashed into a boiling snow torrent from a considerable height. John tried in vain to save her, being all but drowned himself.
They stayed the bank of the torrent for 3 days, when the body of the drowned, young girl was recovered 14 miles lower down the torrent lodged by a broken tree and partly in the water.
A case was made for the body and her mother folded a cerement around it saturated with turpentine from a neighboring village, then laid in a mass of powdered charcoal and the case was carried before them in a funeral procession for five days until they arrived at the civil station Hawalpagh near Almorah where it was buried in Mrs Traill's garden there with a tomb erected over it.

I would be grateful for any information
with thanks

The Common Room / Do you think these photo's are of the same person?
« on: Wednesday 20 August 08 19:48 BST (UK)  »
I have no proof these are the same ancestor, although it looks possible - what do you think?

These are from originals and below are two restorations kindly done by Niksmum and Saddles.
