Have just unearthed this photo of my late husband in his masonic garb.  We went with friends to Portsoy some years ago and whilst we were there our husbands visited one or two lodges so am hopeful that someone can tell me where this is.

Looking forward to hearing from some of you.

Canada Lookup Request / McLeod/Macleod in Nova Scotia
« on: Tuesday 05 November 19 10:30 GMT (UK)  »
I wonder if there is anyone studying this name.

I have a William Macleod married to a Jane Watson but don't know the date or whether they married in Scotland or Nova Scotia.  They were both born in Scotland.  Don't know when William was born but Jane was born circa 1816.

The children I know definitely about are Sarah Ann born 1848 in Nova Scotia, William c 1851 and Elizabeth Bethia c 1854.

I have found the family I think on the 1871 census for Nova Scotia District 201 Sub-District ?  Also on this census are some more possible children - Mary c 1844 and Daniel c 1847.  It also has my said William and Elizabeth but how can I prove it's the right family?

I have also found two death certificates one for Daniel W born 1849 died 1931 and a Henry? born 1851 died 1928 in Point Edward.  Both these certificates bear the name of the parents Capt Wm MacLeod and Jane Watson.

Here's hoping someone can help me.

The Common Room / John Black Quarter Master Sergeant Royal Sappers and Miners
« on: Tuesday 30 January 18 17:12 GMT (UK)  »

Have at last found some concrete evidence of his existence.  He was my 3 x great grandfather and I don’t know for certain when he was born but it was round about 1770.  Also don’t know where he was born – possibly Scotland.
His death was 1829 and his headstone is in the churchyard of St Mary Magdalene, Gillingham.
He was married to Ann (no maiden name) and the children I have for them are
Mary Ann baptised 18 May 1800 in Alverstoke
Henry baptised 14 Nov 1802 in Alverstoke
Elizabeth Ann baptised 11 Sep 1804 in Alverstoke
Jane Black baptised 19 Oct 1806 in St Mary’s Portsea
Harriot Black baptised 21 Aug 1808 St Mary’s Portsea
Eliza Black born approx. 1815 in Guernsey
On the 1841 Census Ann appears as a nurse at the District Ordnance Hospital, Gillingham
Ann – according to 1851 census – was born in Portsmouth about 1771
On the 1851 Census at 1 Manor Street, Gillingham she is head of the household and widowed and her occupation is East Ind Comp Pensioner
Please can anyone help me to find out about his service record.  I would love to know where and when he was born and who and where he married.

The Common Room / How can I get further back with my Black Family?
« on: Thursday 31 March 16 16:33 BST (UK)  »
This is what I know

John Black (don’t know when born or where) married Ann (don’t know maiden name).  According to family tales he may be Scottish
Ann – according to 1851 census – was born in Portsmouth about 1771
As far as I know they had six children
Mary Ann baptised 18 May 1800 in Alverstoke
Henry baptised 14 Nov 1802 in Alverstoke
Elizabeth Ann baptised 11 Sep 1804 in Alverstoke
Jane Black baptised 19 Oct 1806 in St Mary’s Portsea
Harriot Black baptised 21 Aug 1808 St Mary’s Portsea
Eliza Black born approx. 1815 in Guernsey
I have absolutely nothing on John except that he was a Sergeant Major but where or when I don’t know.
On the 1841 Census Ann appears as a nurse at the District Ordnance Hospital, Gillingham
On the 1851 Census at 1 Manor Street, Gillingham she is head of the household and widowed and her occupation is East Ind Comp Pensioner
I have researched the children of John and Ann Black and, apart from Mary Ann, I have hopefully found their marriages etc.  Actually there is a possibility that Mary Ann married John Higman in Portsea in 1826

If anyone could give me advice I would love to hear from you.

To begin at the beginning, I have various family trees using Family Historian that I would like to export to a laptop belonging to our local history group.  I already have FH on two computers so need another program to view them on.

These trees are for old families in our village and I would like to display them to our group.  The information is mostly obtained from parish records and is quite basic.

Would Legacy do what I want or please can anyone recommend anything else.

Technical Help / Need help please with Windows 8.1 update
« on: Monday 20 January 14 10:07 GMT (UK)  »
I updated to 8.1 yesterday and am having a bit of bother with the display being too big for the screen.  I'm not really very good at altering things and wonder if someone could tell me how to get the display back to normal!

I tried reducing the screen resolution but this made things a bit jittery.  Hope someone can help me.

I have the names and dates of birth for these people and am wondering if it is a Ruby Wedding celebration for the two seated on the left.  These are my grandparents and if I have guessed right it would be 1938.  However, I'm not too sure about the fashions!  What does anyone think.
