Wiltshire / Wilts & Berks Canal - Lacock
« on: Sunday 10 September 23 20:34 BST (UK)  »
Is anyone able to explain the canal when it came from Chippenham to Semington Junction in particular as it passed through Bewley Common and Lacock, where there was a supposed hand bridge over the canal, then a bridge by the Bell inn, a wharf, with Wharf cottage, and also I believe a brewery and Toll. Then going further on to three locks, two being Queensfield and Melksham Forest. Can anyone put some meat onto the bones for me. Any old maps, photos of such like material would be most welcomed. Thank you.

Can anybody take the ALLARD marriage of James ALLARD to Mary Potter in 1773 any further back? They were married at All Saints Church, Wetheringsett, Suffolk. Anything would be appreciated, parents, siblings, baptisms, etc.

Armed Forces / Special Mission. Greece. (Archipelago) May-Dec 1943
« on: Friday 06 January 23 16:14 GMT (UK)  »
My uncle was a Phantom Radio Operator during the war, and after doing a few sortees in the desert of North Africa for which he was awarded the MM, he was then sent on a Special Mission, Greece, (Archipelago) between May to Dec 1943. I presume the mission was actually called Archipelago. Any information would be most appreciated on what this mission was. I do know that later in the war, June 1944 he also took part in Special Mission (Bergamotte) for which he was awarded the Croix De Guerre, with Palm Leaf.

World War Two / Brave Uncle - North Africa
« on: Sunday 20 November 22 18:08 GMT (UK)  »
My uncle Richard Robert Francis LANGMAID was awarded the Military Medal and Croix de Guerre (with palm leaf) for carrying out two sorties behind enemy lines with a French Lieutenant Chevalier as a W/T operator. He was a Cpl in the Royal Signals and a Phatom, wearing the P insignia on his sleeve. The two of them spent a total of 70 days in enemy territory sending and receiving over 50 accurate messages, showing complete disregard for their personal safety and a constant devotion to duty. On the citation it states:
In view of the secret nature of this NCO’s tas, details should not be published
Would anyone be able to rely me what these may have been, and if anything is known about Lieutenant Chevalier. There sorties would have been between 26 April - 17 July 1942.
Any assistance or information would be most appreciated.

World War One / HMS Victory 1920
« on: Monday 14 November 22 20:54 GMT (UK)  »
Yes we have just held another ‘Remembrance Day’ so there will be lots of people asking questions I appreciate. However near to where I live there is a cemetery that holds a few Commonwealth Graves, one that I visit every year and put poppies on as he was in my Corp and died some eighty years ago. However near to him is another service grave (Portland Stone) with the following inscription upon it:
M F Hemings
Able Seaman RN J/7529
HMS Victory
??th March 1920 Age 25

I have to say the M is well worn as is the J, and the date really quite difficult to make out due to weathering. Can anyone shed any light on this young man, or the HMS Viictory that he was serving upon. I know that HMS Raleigh was formally HMS Victory and a training base for naval recruits.
Any information would be most interesting. Thank you.

Armed Forces / Capt F Peatling Queens Regiment
« on: Saturday 19 February 22 16:21 GMT (UK)  »
Trying to find out a little bit of information on a Capt, maybe Major F Peatling who served in Singapore in the 1950’s. I am led to believe that he was in the Queens Regiment, but believe this only came into being in 1966. So not sure what he was serving in as there were four Home Counties regiments. He sold my father his car, a Austin 7, and then bought a new Austin Somerset. This would have been around 1953/4. Any assistance would be most appreciated.

Armed Forces / Troopship Passenger Lists
« on: Sunday 23 January 22 23:32 GMT (UK)  »
I have found passenger lists of the troopships following the war, such as SS Orduna, MS Dilwara etc. but they only see to show any wives and children who were on board. I know that husbands did not share cabins with their wives during the voyage and that indeed maybe up to four wives with their children may have shared a cabin. The troops sleeping in a totally different part of the ship. Where are the lists of these troops to be found though? I would like to be able to prove that my mother and father both returned on the same ship.
Any assistance would be most appreciated.

Suffolk Lookup Requests / Abraham/Robinson Marriage
« on: Wednesday 12 January 22 17:23 GMT (UK)  »
I would love to find out where and when Ruth Ayliff Robinson, the daughter of Lt Col MacLeod Bawtree Robinson of Pound Hall, Long Melford, Suffolk (1858-1935) married Arthur Abraham before emigrating in 1913 to Vargas Island in BC, Canada to join her husband, a rancher. Sadly, he as a Capt with the 23rd Bantam Battalion of the Manchester Regiment was killed in WW1, he received the Military Cross. Ruth returned to Pound Hall in 1919 as a widow. She left Montreal on the ship Melita arriving back in the U.K. on the 9th November 1919. Her brother in law Edward Abraham was my great uncle also living on Vargas Island, but thankfully survived the war and took my great aunt Dorothy Abraham (nee ALLARD) as a war bride. Information on Ruth and Arthur’s marriage would be most appreciated. Thank you in anticipation.
