Renfrewshire / Dissenting Churches Records on Scotlands People
« on: Thursday 06 July 17 19:24 BST (UK)  »
Anyone looking for records in the newly added Scotland'sPeople "Other Churches" section - you may temporarily have to expand your search.

Recently while checking in Lanark for some relatives in the relief Churches I found quite a number of records from  Paisley Churches. SP have replied to my report of this and acknowledged the error which they intend to correct.

US Completed Requests / US World War 1 Draft Cards (COMPLETED)
« on: Friday 09 June 17 13:25 BST (UK)  »
I have been looking at a few of these World War 1 Draft Cards recently from Indiana and in the physical descriptions of the individuals recorded (only on some of the cards) there are statistics showing as :-

Height - Tall,  Medium, Short - with a tick or cross against that fitting the individual
Build -  Slender, Medium, Stout - with a tick or cross against that fitting the individual

Does anyone know what general measurements these classifications actually fall into ?

Thanks,
Robert

Technical Help / Windows Creators Update -coming soon.
« on: Wednesday 12 April 17 14:17 BST (UK)  »
The latest update to windows "Windows Creators Update" starts its official roll out.

1. its a major update and takes quite a while to download and update - on the plus side no files or installed programs were removed or damaged during process

2. All of those annoying "live tiles"/ report to Microsoft links that you turned off have been turned back on by default.

3. Most of the changes are internal but some of the utilities have had a face lift (eg the snipping tool). Paint is now Paint 3D and as the name suggests it now works with 3d images. There is a "mail" link now stuck on the taskbar

4. Boot up & shutdown seem faster

5. Apps(Program) and Internet integration has been stepped up

I've been running it for a few weeks now and so far, no problems.

Scotland / James - a female forename ? COMPLETED
« on: Friday 24 March 17 12:31 GMT (UK)  »
Recently while checking some census transcriptions on  a cousins lineage I found the family in the 1901 census and one of their children  has piqued my curiosity...

This child's forename is JAMES - listed in the transcription as daughter gender as female. I must admit that I believed that the transcriber had mucked up but upon downloading the original from Sotlands People I saw that the transcriber had transferred exactly what was on the record.
I still believed a mistake had been made somewhere until this morning. Checking some old Parish Records I found another entry (from 1841) listing the burial of another child with the forename James also listed as daughter.

Although I have come across some pretty unusual names and "creative" uses of surnames as forenames this is the first time I have come across the use of what appears to be a male name for a daughter without any adaption e.g Georgina for George, Roberta for Robert etc. - can anyone throw any light on this ?

Armed Forces / Regiment Identification - COMPLETED
« on: Monday 21 September 15 17:57 BST (UK)  »
I have found an individual who I believe was my Great x3 Grandfather but I would like to know more about the regiments he served in.

25th March 1844 in Ireland, aged 18, he joined the 27th Regiment of Foot and by 1849 had been promoted to Sergeant (according to his discharge papers) and transferred to the "1st or Royal Regiment 2nd Battallion".

Can anyone provide further information on these Regiments for me.

Thanks.

Robert

Lanarkshire / Geography Lesson Needed (COMPLETED)
« on: Thursday 11 June 15 10:28 BST (UK)  »
I have been looking through Old Parish Records and Mortcloth records for Carluke trying to break through some Hamilton family brickwalls  .....

I have found several references to :-
1. John Hamilton in Law
2. John Hamilton in Park of Mauldslie (Mauldsley) and
3. John Hamilton in Law of Mauldslie

(all from 1750 to 1800)
Are these different locations and so 3 different individuals or could they be the same place and possibly then 1 person
