Family History Programs, Tree Organisation, Presentation / Mapping Tool
« on: Friday 31 July 20 07:08 BST (UK)  »
Hi - hope this is the correct board, please advise if not.
I have a relative who was in the East India Company. I'd like to find a world map, preferably from the 1800's that I can show his voyages from the UK to the East and simply mark in the place names.
I'm not brilliant on new software and would like to draw in the voyage and mark key places visited: Teneriffe; Macau; Hong Kong; Chennai etc.
Would anyone know of such a thing. I've Googled and there seem to be one or two that might work, I guess I'm looking for recommendations.
Many thanks in advance.

Australia / DIXON John & GILBERT Emma
« on: Tuesday 08 October 19 05:58 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for advice on where to go next.  John DIXON and Emily GILBERT's children were all registered in Liverpool, NSW. (James 1845; Thomas 1847; Frances 1854; George 1857; Emily Agnes 1859). Baptisms seem to have been at St Luke's Liverpool. Two other children deceased at the time of Emily's death in 1862.
Emily's death certificate records her as being born in Liverpool in 1828 and also the marriage in 1845 in Liverpool.  The Death place is Enfield (the family seems to have moved to the Enfield/Ashfield area).
John's name is recorded as 'Dickson' in relation to the marriage though as witness to the burial, he is recorded as 'Dixon'.  Emily's Death certificate does not record her parents. An unsourced Tree indicates that Emily may have been indigenous.
I have no information on John (name is common and many came as convicts; assisted and unassisted immigrants). The only unsourced information is that he may have been Irish.
John was deceased by 1875 when his daughter married. Have checked NSW BMD, various cemetery records, shipping records, convict indents etc for clues. Nothing stands out.
I'm looking to at least find out when and where John may have arrived in NSW.  Would really appreciate any suggestions of where to look. Thanks in advance.

Lancashire / John LEA/LEIGH/LEE of Tyldesley - a Tailor
« on: Thursday 29 March 18 05:51 BST (UK)  »
I'm seeking assistance in establishing birth and apprenticeship records for John LEA (spellings vary).

The verifiable facts that I have state that he married in Cheadle, Cheshire, to Elizabeth Lawton in 1828.  From 1829 until 1839, their children were born in Tyldesley, baptised in Leigh and the baptism records indicate that John was a Tailor.

I am fairly confident that he died in Tyldesley in 1839, the burial record states that he was 44. John is not recorded on the 1841 Census and Elizabeth remarried in 1847.
If the 1839 death is the correct John Leigh, then birth year would be around 1795.

I’ve checked Ancestry, Family Search, Find my Past, Lancashire OPC, Cheshire Parish Register Data Base, Free Reg and just about anything else I can find.

The marriage record has his parish as Cheadle.

I am trying establish his birth details and his apprenticeship details. For apprentice records, I’ve checked Ancestry which seem to be the National Archives records. Still haven’t had the chance to check the apprenticeship records on FindMyPast at the library.
There is a possible baptism in Leigh in 1795 – to Thomas and Martha (the name Martha was given to their 3rd daughter).

My thinking is that he may well have been born in Leigh (given he started working there immediately after his marriage) and then served an apprenticeship in Cheshire where he met his wife. Comments/thoughts please?  I’m beginning to think I’m clutching at straws.

I have not yet been able to find an apprenticeship record online (I’m in Sydney) that could fit.  Perhaps someone could point me to a source I’ve not yet found.  If he served 7 years as an apprentice, that would put a record around 1803, given his marriage in 1828 and possible birth in 1795.
Or maybe after puzzling over this for years, I just accept that there is nowhere else to go.  I’ve put this on the Lancashire Board but happy to be re-directed.

Thanks for your thoughts in advance.

Lancashire / Sarah WADDINGTON nee OAKES
« on: Thursday 09 November 17 01:23 GMT (UK)  »
Good morning from Sydney,
Seeking some advice/maybe reassurance that I'm not missing the obvious. This is the  information I have to date. (Lancs OPC, Ancestry, Family Search).

I have Thomas WADDINGTON marrying Sarah OAKES in Deane in June 1819 both of that parish. She is a spinster (thought at one point she may have remarried).
Now trying to establish her parents.
1841 Census Sarah b Leigh 1789 (52 yo)
1851 Census Sarah b Atherton 1799 (52 yo) All other details for the Waddington family are correct on both Census' so would it be beyond the realms of possibility that the birth year/age are incorrect on the 1851 Census? Are they two different Sarah's?
1861 Census has a Sarah Waddington living with her daughter, Ellen Green, (BTW I can't find her as a daughter of Thomas and Sarah) b Atherton 1786 (75 yo) and 1871 Census still living with Green family, this time b Leigh 1787 (84yo).
Are the birth locations likely to alternate between Leigh and Atherton? or again, are there two Sarah's, each  marrying a Thomas Waddington?

If Sarah was born in Leigh around 1789, there are two possibilities: D of Joseph and Sarah of Bedford bapt 1787; or Sally Oakes D of Richard and Betty of Atherton bapt 1788.  Sally a diminutive of Sarah? though not called Sally anywhere else).

I had thought that Sally was the best bet as forenames for subsequent generations included Richard and Betty, but now am thinking maybe too much reliance on naming patterns.

Would really appreciate comments/criticism of where I am thinking.

Thanks so much.

Lancashire / WADDINGTON, John - from Cotton Spinner to Watchmaker?
« on: Wednesday 06 September 17 04:45 BST (UK)  »
Is it possible that John Waddington moved from being a cotton spinner to a watchmaker?

I have John born 1832 to Thomas (a weaver) & Sarah in Tyldesley in 1832.

John married Ellen Holliday in 1852 in Prestwich and his occupation is given as a 'mule spinner'.
In the 1861 Census John and Ellen are living in Kearsley and he is a 'cotton spinner', they have 3 children:Sarah Anne (1853), Charlotte (1858), Richard (1860).
In the 1871 Census they are living in Farnworth and John is listed as 'Watchmaker & Jeweller', they have 5 children: Sarah Anne (1853), Charlotte (1858), Richard (1860), Selina (1862), William (1865).
In the 1881 Census they are still in Farnworth (Ellen is listed as 'Helen) and John is a 'Clock & Watch Maker. There are 3 children still at home: Richard (1860), Seline (1862), William (1865).

Is it at all possible that a cotton spinner in his mid twenties could have become a watchmaker?
I initially thought I may have the wrong family but the dates and the children fit almost perfectly. Given the names are not all that common in the family, the combination of names and birthdates is convincing me.
Would be grateful to you all if you could confirm the possibility of such a career change, or let me know what I have missed and am barking up the wrong tree.
Many thanks

Down / Pronunciation 'Rathfriland'
« on: Sunday 06 August 17 05:30 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
After years of researching my ancestors originating in Rathfriland, it occurs to me that it would be useful to know exactly how to pronounce the name  :-[
Those of us several generations, not to say continents, removed, could use some local knowledge, please. So, any assistance (did google searches for assistance, no joy) in learning how to say 'Rathfriland', 'Drumballyroney' and 'Drumgath' would be gratefully received.
Thanks

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / KEMPE Kathleen - possibly
« on: Wednesday 19 April 17 06:42 BST (UK)  »
Hi there,
I was given a batch of scanned family photos. There is nothing other than the photo,  for example I don't have the back as I've not seen the original. I'm unable to access the original now as the contact is no longer with us.
I'm guessing that this is of my grandmother, Kath Kempe.  If it is, she was born in April 1897 in NSW Australia.
The photo does need some restoration (if anyone has a chance to do so, I'd be grateful) but wondering if there are any hints that might help with a date.  The child seems to be around 18 months old which would date this as late 1898.  Is there an expert who might be able to pick out something in terms of dress, decoration etc that might definitively place this in Australia? My grandfather who is the other possibility was born in Belfast in 1898.
I'm inclined to think it was my grandmother as that family were financially comfortable and in a position to afford to have a photo - I'm guessing that these weren't cheap at the time.
There seem to be some biro marks on the child's right shoulder as well as the dog's face.  The fact that the child seems to have bows in her hair make me think it is more likely to be a girl.
Kath was the only girl in the family, she had 6 brothers, so perhaps all the more reason a photo was taken.
Any help in confirming or refute all this is thankfully received.

Antrim / Haldane Court from Griffiths Valuation
« on: Tuesday 03 January 17 00:27 GMT (UK)  »
Good morning, I'm seeking some local knowledge in what I think is a street name change. have spent best part of two days on this, and getting nowhere.
Joseph MAY of 3 and 5 Haldane Court, Shankill in the townland of Townparks in Griffiths, page no 517, O/S map 21
Using the askaboutireland website (which has been brilliant) and clicking on maps - both large and small with no map appearing. It could be my computer is slow and it's a large map but have left it for 20 mins or so and still nothing.
What I'm trying to do is find map of Haldane Court to include in the family history.
I tried finding it on a modern map and working back from there, but no luck, seems the name must have been changed since 1860. No mention of Haldane St either - the Court runs off it.
Have tried searching for various subjects along the lines of 'old street names Belfast' and found nothing. A number of the links to old maps are broken. I've searched for parish maps of Shankill and townland maps of Townparks to at least find the general area then trying to find Haldane Court. no luck there either.
Would any of you kind people know whether the name was changed and if so, what the modern name is? And whether it's just me having a problem downloading this Griffiths map? If so, then I can get to a better computer at some point.
I'm writing up the family history (NFP) and had no problem downloading maps in and around Rathfriland in Down. Is this just a problem because of the size of a Belfast map?
Or am I being thick as a plank and missing something obvious?

Thanks in advance

Midlothian / Drysdale Baptisms
« on: Monday 03 October 16 05:30 BST (UK)  »
My question reveals my ignorance of church organisation in Scotland, apologies in advance. Am reading up but still confused.

George Drysdale b 13 Dec 1779, son of John Drysdale and Katherine Miller seems to have been christened twice:
  • Bristo Associate Congregation, Edinburgh (19 Dec 1779), and
    Edinburgh Parish, Edinburgh(30 Dec 1779)

I was wondering whether one was religious and the other administrative?

Two of his siblings: John (b 1781) and another George (b 1782) are recorded similarly.

Three of his siblings: Katherine (b 1784), William (b 1785) and Christian (b 1788) are only recorded as being baptised in Edinburgh Parish. I did note that there were internal divisions within the Bristo Congregation and that 130 members left in 1785 to form the Broughton Congregation.
Bristo seems to have been Presbyterian Non Conformist and Edinburgh Parish was Church of  Scotland, so wondered whether that had anything to do with it?

Also there is no specific church mentioned, so wondered if it was purely an early version of a civic record.

I have the OPR  of John's birth in 1781:
"John Drysdale Merchant and Katherine Miller his Spouse Tolbooth Kirk Parish, a son Born 4th February named John - Baptised in Church"

Many thanks ...
