Australia / Death and Burial of Miguel (John) Garcia
« on: Tuesday 15 January 08 07:28 GMT (UK)  »
Miguel Paschal Garcia has eluded our family for years.  See http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=278783.new

He was born in London about 1835, married in Dunedin 1868, lived in Richmond, Melbourne in the 1870/80s and may have moved back to NZ in about 1888, or died earlier in Melbourne, Victoria or elsewhere, or perhaps left NZ in the 1880/90s to parts unknown, including possibly Melbourne.

He appears to have been also known as Michael Garcia or John Garcia.  He was variously a clerk, draughtsman, and bookkeeper and his movements to Dunedin, Victoria, and Thames NZ indicate a connection with gold, but perhaps only in providing ancillary services.

He was aged 46 in 1881 when his mother died in Richmond.

Any help would be appreciated.  This is a last-ditch effort before a Garcia family reunion in New Zealand this week end.

Kind regards

Shadwell

New Zealand Completed Requests / Death and Burial Place Miguel (John) Garcia
« on: Monday 14 January 08 09:53 GMT (UK)  »
Many relatives have been looking through various records over the years for the death and burial place of my great-grandfather, Miguel Paschal Garcia - most likely around Thames between 1889 and 1908.  He was born in London about 1835, married in Dunedin 1868, lived in Melbourne in the 1870/80s and moved back to NZ in about 1888.  He appears to have been also known as Michael Garcia or John Garcia.

His wife Mary Jane Garcia died in 1908 and is buried at Shortland Cemetery, Thames, but no sign of Miguel.  John Garcia (aka Miguel Garcia?), Totara Point, Thames, is listed in 1889 as a guardian of James Garcia (my grandfather) in the Thames High School Register of Pupils.

Any help or suggestions would be gratefully appreciated.

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Methodist or Presbyterian
« on: Thursday 08 November 07 10:04 GMT (UK)  »
The census of 1851 shows my ancestor Miguel Paschal Garcia was born in Shadwell in 1835 or 1836, but I can find no record of his birth at parishregisters.com. His mother, Elizabeth Garcia (nee Graham), was buried in Melbourne by a Minister from the Methodist Free Church and Miguel was married in 1868 in the Knox Presbyterian Church, Dunedin, NZ.  Can anyone help me locate church records that could provide more details about Miguel Paschal Garcia's birth/christening?
I'd also be interested if anyone came across a marriage between Elizabeth Graham and Miguel Garcia (Miguel Paschal's father was also Miguel) between 1820 and 1835.
Many thanks

Australia / James GARCIA birth Richmond VIC 1876-78
« on: Monday 05 November 07 09:37 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there
None of my family have been able to find details of my grandfather's birth or christening in Melbourne despite visits and searches of commonly available records there and in NZ.† We believe James GARCIA was born on 13 January 1876 (NZ school admission record, although anytime 1875 to 1878 is possible) in Richmond, Melbourne (Cyclopaedia of NZ) or at least Melbourne (death certificate).† His parents were Miguel Paschal GARCIA (sometimes known as John GARCIA, emigrated from London) and Mary Jane GARCIA (nee AMY, emigrated from Jersey, likely of Presbyterian faith).
The Garcia family lived in Richmond (Charlotte St, Rowena Parade, Brougham St) from 1876 to about 1887 (Directories).† Jamesís early education was at Yarra Park State School in Melbourne.† The family also had a son named Stanley GARCIA, born on 14 or 16 August 1882 (NZ school record, probably in Melbourne) who we believe was adopted.† Possibility, therefore, that James GARCIA was also adopted, which could explain why we are unable to find his birth record.† The birth details of James GARCIA are an important link for our family as a GARCIA family reunion looms in January in New Zealand.† We would be grateful for any help to find James GARCIA's birth details or other Australian information on this GARCIA family.† Kind regards.† †

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Miguel GARCIA birth 1835 or 1836
« on: Sunday 07 October 07 02:14 BST (UK)  »
We would like a lookup please of the birth of Miguel GARCIA.† The 1851 census states Miguel GARCIA was aged 15 and born at Shadwell about 1836, but family considers more likely 1835.† He was 5 in the 1841 census and living with Elizabeth Garcia, whom we assume to be his mother.† I've tried parishregisters.com without success.† We have a GARCIA family reunion in New Zealand in January and would appreciate any details of Miguel GARCIA and his parents.† Many thanks in advance.† †
