Staffordshire Lookup Requests / Raincoat factory in walsall
« on: Wednesday 15 March 23 01:31 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I know it’s a long shot but I think My dad was related to the owner of a raincoat and rubber factory that was behind mill lane, butts in walsall. I remember it as a child as my grannie lived at No 81 mill lane and her garden wall met the factory land and the factory with lots of blacked out windows was to the left. Now 45 years on from my memory the factory has gone. I don’t know of the name of it or who was the registered owner and have tried to do some research but to no avail. I live in the northeast in Darlington so I’m not close either to go to the walsall archives either. Can anyone shed any light on this factory and it’s owner? My dad was born in 1928 so it’s the owner around that time I’m
Interested in. Thank u for your time and any help u can give me

Shropshire / Margaret RICHARDSON - Wellington?
« on: Thursday 25 February 10 23:46 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find my Great Grandmother Margaret Richardson who lived in Kings street, Wellington, Shropshire when she gave birth to my Nan Dorothy Ricahrdson on 27th April 1908.
Margaret is listed as 'Domestic Servant Housekeeper' on the Birth Cert and that is ALL the info i have on her! I sent away for my Nan's BC to find her Fathers details are not given and this info about her Mother. My Nan was in Wellington Workhouse until aged 13 and no other details are known.
I cannot find either of them on the 1911 census, and there is ONE Margaret Richardson on the 1901 census in Shropshire which may well be her.
ANY help or info you can give me on Margaret Richardson would be greatly appreciated as me and my Sister have been searching for her for ages without success.
Thank you and kind regards.

Armed Forces / John Job Briscoe - Royal Garrison Artillery - Gunner - 1423981
« on: Tuesday 27 January 09 14:16 GMT (UK)  »
Hello to you all,

I am trying to find out some more info on my Grandad John Job Briscoe.
I have recently discovered that he served with the Royal Garrison Artillery as a Gunner (1423981).
I was always told as a child that he lied about his age and joined up aged 14 in 1914 (dob: 14 Nov 1900, Hanwood, Shrops). Apparently he spent 7 years out in India in the Army before returning after being invalided out after a bad accident while riding the lead horse of a troop pulling gun carriages (?) while fighting Afgans on the borders. He recovered in Cottsbrooke Military Hospital in Shropshire.
I don't know how much of this is correct other than serving in India. I didn't know that the Garrison
Artillery served out in India in WW1?
I have no access to Ancestry records so if anyone can be of any further help to substantiate any of these details or can find out any other information i would be very grateful.
Thanks and kind regards, Erica.

I wondered if anyone could do some digging for me as i have no access to Ancestry? It regards my Husband's Great Grandfather (Benn) and Great Uncle (Harry) who served throughout the whole of the war in the RAMC.
I unearthed some info i found in some old papers belonging to Benn Dawson, which may help anyone to ascertain that they have the right man when doing any digging for me! (I have a strong feeling that Benn's name was mis-spelled though on documents as 'Ben' which doesn't help)!

Benn Dawson - Reg No: 343034
Unit: 34 bbs(?) RAMC
Enlisted on 23 Nov 1914 and mobilised on 5 Nov 1915
Left as a Lance Cpl

Private Harry Dawson - Reg No: 43100
No1 Platoon, 16th Manchesters, RAMC

I would be very grateful if anyone could find them for me and any information would be greatly received. Thank you.
Kind regards, Erica.

World War One / Info for relatives who served in WWI
« on: Saturday 17 January 09 21:11 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Further to my post regarding getting info on my relatives war service
( http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,353882.0.html) , here is all the info i have on them:

PETER MCPOLAND - DofB - 12/11/1878 - Dalton, Cumbria (I think he served some of his time in the Sutherland and Argyll Highlanders before remustering to the Army Corps i think) Survived the War

BENN DAWSON - DofB - 28/12/1873 - Kendal, Westmorland. (Served in the RAMC - lied about his age to get in!) Survived the War

HARRY DAWSON - DofB - 1898 - Crooklands, Nr Kendal, Westmorland. (Benns Son also served in the RAMC and also lied about his age to get in!) Survived the War

WALTER DOWNING - DofB - 26/04/1890 - Walsall, Staffs. (He was in the Territorial Army from about 1909 i think then joined the regulars but was medically discharged at some early - ish stage? Served in the South Staffordshire Regiment)

GEORGE BERNARD DOWNING - DofB - 1888 - Walsall, Staffs. (Walters older Brother who also served in the South Staffordshire Regiment and was killed on 23/04/1917 at the Battle of Arras with no known grave)

WILLIAM BLOUNT - DofB - c1862 - St Martins, Warwickshire. (Served asa regular Soldier for many years before being pensioned off sometime before 1911. I believe he re-entered the Army on the outbreak of WWI and died whilst serving at a Depot? sometime before the end of the war. Not sure which Regiment he was with but may have been the Shropshire Light Infantry???)

JOHN JOB BRISCOE - DofB - 14/11/1900 - Hanwood, Shropshire. (I think he served with the Royal Horse Artillery but may be wrong! he lied about his age to get in but unsure what year he actually joined. I DO know he carried on serving after WWI and was in India for 7 years before returning home after being medically discharged due to accident).

I would be really grateful if anyone could do any digging on the Army srvice of these relatives as i have no access to Ancestry etc. Any info you can find out would be much appreciated.

Many thanks and kind regards, Erica.

Armed Forces / Records of relatives who served in WWI & WWII
« on: Friday 16 January 09 23:51 GMT (UK)  »
Hello to you all,

I am wondering how to go about looking up the military records for 8 men inmine and my husbands family? I have all their names, most DofB/PoB, and SOME of their regiment names. I also know the DofD for one of them in WWI.
I am really interested in now knowing where they served and what medals they were awarded. Does anyone know how to get this info for free or cheaper than joining Ancestry which i find expensive?
Thankyou. Regards, Erica.

Shropshire / Harold Guy Kirkpatrick RICHARDSON - born 1875 or 1875?
« on: Wednesday 14 January 09 12:42 GMT (UK)  »
Hi to you all!
I am in a two year long search for the family of my Nan (Dorothy Briscoe - dob - 28 April 1908 in King Street, Wellington, Shrops) who was adopted from Wellington workhouse/orphanage aged 13 by Emily Blount.
Her birth certificate gives no Fathers name or details but her Mothers name of Margaret Richardson.
I can't find Dorothy at all in the 1911 census info?!? and there are 3 Margaret's listed in Shrops at that time. I have found another Richardson who lives in KING STREET, WELLINGTON, SHROPs in the census but he is a man - Harold Guy Kirkpatrick Richardson - married - age 36 - born 1875 - Political Agent - Born Hanley, Staffs. He is a Boarder at this address in King Street with the owners and 3 other male Boarders. I know he may not be Dorothy's Dad but was he her Uncle perhaps? Where is his Wife? What is she called?
Is one of the Margaret's her Mother? 2 are in service, and 1 is a single sister of a Doctor.
Is this the link with Dorothy i have been searching for all this time to finally find out about her family? Can any of you clever people out there find anything out for me as i'm not sure where to go next and don't have access to census info etc.
Thank you for any help you may be able to give to me - it is much appreciated.

Hello to you all!

I wondered if anyone could help me. The other night my destructive two year old got hold of a frame and ripped up a very treasured picture (see below). It shows yours truly aged approx 3 months with my older Sister and my Mom. My Mom passed away 6 years ago and photos of her when we were small are rare so i was devastated as you can imagine.
I have managed to find all the pieces (bar a slither) and glued them together to scan. This is the best i could do.
I wondered if anyone could improve this photo for me as i have seen other results on this page.

Thank you so much for your help.
Regards, Erica.
