Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Where did Ann Eagan Live?
« on: Wednesday 17 November 21 08:26 GMT (UK)  »
Hello

Can anyone work out the address of the bride on this snippet of certificate please?  I can see that the groom lived in Foundry Street but can't quite make out the bride's address.
Thank you.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / What was Elizabeth's maiden name?
« on: Sunday 13 December 20 14:51 GMT (UK)  »
Here's a snip from a marriage certificate.  Adam Macdonald married Lilias Turnbull in 1918.
What was Adam's mother's maiden name?  It looks like Tyne but I'm not 100% sure.

Thanks!

The Common Room / GRO During Lockdown - Delay
« on: Monday 06 July 20 10:12 BST (UK)  »
Sorry if this has been asked recently.

I ordered three full certificates on June 25th.  One birth, one marriage and one death.
The estimated despatch date for all three was July 1st.  The marriage certificate was despatched on July 1st and I have received it.  The birth and the death are still showing as 'in progress - despatch estimate July 1st'

I appreciate that there might be a delay during the lockdown but how long should I leave it before I contact them?

Has anyone else experience a week's delay?  Is is odd that the marriage came on time and the others (ordered at the same time) didn't?

Thanks for any thoughts.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Southampton - Where are these places?
« on: Thursday 14 May 20 14:20 BST (UK)  »
I have a birth certificate from 1866.  The child was born at 1 Dorset Terrace, Southampton and the mother's residence is given as 12 Saint Mary's Place, Southampton.

I can't find either of these places on any maps.

The mother was on her own and the child illegitimate.

Can anyone help me please?

This photo of a young girl was in my great aunt's belongings and I know nothing about it.

Somebody suggested it might be a confirmation photo.  All I know is that it was almost certainly taken in east London.

Can anyone suggest a date and what she might be holding?

Thanks in advance/

London and Middlesex / What happened to Sarah Williams?
« on: Thursday 12 July 18 12:38 BST (UK)  »
This might be quite long.  Sorry.

Sarah/Sadie Romain was born in the Netherlands in about 1889 and came to the UK with her family.  They lived in Whitechapel/Spitalfields and we have her in the 1891 and 1901 census records living with her parents Jonas and Betsy Romain in and around Whitechapel.

In January 1909 she married Harris (Harry) Chinsky and in October that year their daughter Deborah was born.

In the 1911 census she's living alone in a shared house in Whitechapel back calling herself Sarah Romain and single.  No sign of Deborah.

In 1914 she married Joseph Williams and in 1925 they have a daughter Eugenia who was born in Hackney, London.

Deborah re-appears living with her grandmother Betsy in 1939.

I've found Eugenia who (it turns out) was brought up by another of her father's wives in Essex but after 1925 Sarah/Sadie disappears.

I can't find her in 1939, as far as I can tell she didn't marry again and I can't find her name on any passenger lists.  She just falls off the planet.

I don't have an exact date of birth for her and I've investigated the obvious death in Hackney in 1958 and it isn't her.  Where aren't I looking?

Essex / Can't Find Street in 1939 - West Ham
« on: Friday 13 April 18 08:38 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,

I have a passenger list dated 1957 where the passengers I'm interested in were coming from New York to the UK.
The address given that they would be visiting in the UK was 34 Leabon Street, West Ham (typewritten so no mistake of the name).

I can't find any mention of this street in the 1939 register and it seems to have been re-developed since 1957.

Anyone know how I can find out who was living here either in 1939 or 1957 or any of the dates in between?

Many thanks.

Denbighshire Lookup Requests / Where was Owen in 1871?
« on: Saturday 31 March 18 16:27 BST (UK)  »
I have Owen Pritchard (born 1833) in every census from 1841 to 1901 but I can't find him anywhere in 1871.

Born in Dolyddelen, he married Ellen Davies (born c 1831) in 1854 in Llanwrst.  They have children Ellen (1857) Catherine (1858) and Ann (1866) and latterly grandchildren David (1876) John Owen (1879) and Margaret Ellen (1880).

Where did they all go in 1871?

In 1861 they were at    Tydu     Esgorebrill Eglwys Fach RG09 4304 61 11

 and in 1881 they were at  Glan Y Wern  Llandrillo-Yn-Rhôs (Denbigh)  Denbighshire  RG11 5582 79 5

I know they must be there somewhere but I just can't find them.  Can anyone help?

Thank you!
