Ireland / Best genealogy website for Irish family tree?
« on: Monday 16 September 13 11:04 BST (UK)  »
I have an Ancestry membership and most of my family research is focussed in England, for both myself and my husband however my mum is Irish and I'm finding that Ancestry is not particularly helpful for this side of the family.

Is there are a better website to use for Irish research?

Dublin / Access to workhouse records
« on: Monday 16 September 13 10:58 BST (UK)  »
I'd like to get some more information as I discovered through my great-grandmothers birth certificate that she was born in South Dublin Union Workhouse in 1907. I'd like to know more about this and whether the rest of her family were there etc.

I'm in England and won't be travelling to Ireland anytime in the foreseeable future - is there anyway to access these documents remotely?

England / Struggling to find birth & death for Margaret Barrett
« on: Sunday 15 September 13 21:27 BST (UK)  »
I'm struggling to find either a birth or a death for one Margaret Barrett.

Margaret was born in the Liverpool area and her date of birth is sketchy as it varies wildly over the different censuses.

She married Isaac Rollason (sometimes Rawlinson) in 1837 in Prescot, Lancashire before moving to the Aston area of Birmingham where I have located her in 1841 (age 30), 1851 (age 32), 1861 (age 40), 1871 (age 49) and 1881 (age 59).  I'm starting to think she was probably around 20 in 1841 rather than 30.

In 1851 she is listed as a widow, though I've not found Isaac's death as yet, and she married John Newbold in 1857 in Birmingham. I believe she died pre 1891 census as on that one her daughter is listed living with John who is described as a widow.

I can't seem to find a death for a Margaret Newbold in the Birmingham area between 1881 and 1891 and drawing complete blanks on her birth!

Any help would be very much appreciated - I can no see the wood for the trees!

This has been transcribed as "Octron" on Ancestry. It's a snippet from the 1861 census, and it's a two year old girl.

Worcestershire / Mary Ann Minett Tyler & her family
« on: Tuesday 19 February 13 09:33 GMT (UK)  »
I've been struggling with this one for a while but have had a bit of a breakthrough this week.

I have been trying to find out the parents of Mary Ann Minett, born abt 1854 in Worcestershire for sometime. She is the mother of an ancestor and her name was on the birth certificate.  I've traced her back through the censuses and found her in 1861 aged 7 living with her grandparents Thomas and Mary Ann Tyler. From FamilySearch I then found a baptism - which is where it clicked and why I was struggling to find her. The baptism record has her name as Mary Ann Minett Tyler baptised 1854 in Martley Worcestershire, mother Ann Tyler. I've looked back again and found Ann Tyler in 1841 living with her parents, aged 4, in Hallow, Worcestershire.

I can't seem to find anything else about Ann Tyler and can't follow her on the census into 1851 or further. I don't know where she was born but it was in Worcestershire and must have been about 1837.  I've found a few possibilities but I can't be sure. I also don't know who the "Minett" is but she went on to have at least two other children with this surname as they are also on the 1861 census.

I've found a birth for a Mary Ann Tyler around the right time so I shall order the certificate today but was wondering if anyone with more expertise can locate Ann in 1851 onwards.

I've also always struggled to find Mary Ann's marriage to Thomas Butler. Thomas was born in Worcestershire in the 1850s but lived in Birmingham from 1861 onwards so I guess the marriage could have been in either Worcestershire or Birmingham.

As an aside, Mary Ann Minett Tyler's grandmother Mary Ann Tyler isn't on the 1851 census with her family but she does appear in 1841 and 1861. All the mis-spellings on Ancestry aren't helping me!

Thanks for any help/advice!

Edited: Since posting this morning I've traced the siblings Thomas Minett abt 1856 and 1858 John Minett and found their baptisms on FamilySearch. Thomas James Minet, 1856 parents Charles Minet and Anne. John Mynett, 1858 Charles Mynett and Anne.   Just can't find a marriage for Charles and Ann now!

Staffordshire Lookup Requests / Lookup, St Matthew, Walsall
« on: Wednesday 26 September 12 22:18 BST (UK)  »
I was wondering if anybody has access to the Banns of Marriage or the parish registers for St Matthew, Walsall.

I am looking for the marriage of William Marshall to Maria Lewis, 18th February 1822.

I was wondering if there would be any parents details (unlikely), witnesses, or at the very least if the Banns could tell me where William was from.

Thank you.

England / How can I confirm this?
« on: Wednesday 26 September 12 21:38 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find out the parents of William Marshall (born abt 1796).

I have found him on 1841, 1851 and 1861 census. On the 1841 and 1861 census his place of birth is listed as Walsall, but in 1851 it's Stratford-upon-Avon. He married in Walsall in 1822.

I have a found a birth for a William Marshall in 1796 in Stratford-upon-Avon and the parents are listed as Thomas Marshall and Catharine.

The problem I have is if there are no parents on the register (which I believe there weren't pre 1837?) then how can I confirm that these were in fact his parents and this is his birth?

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / 1871 Handwriting

This is from the census in 1871. The address is one I've come across a few times but not seen this next to it, only in 1871. I thought it said fruit shop but the head is a gun finisher?
