Northamptonshire / Parish church Northampton
« on: Tuesday 19 November 19 08:34 GMT (UK)  »
If a couple married in 'the parish church of St Edmunds' in 1955 what church would this be?
I read that the ecclesiastical district of St Edmund's was formed from that of St Giles so would it be St Giles church or All Saints?

Wiltshire Lookup Requests / Compton Chamberlayne
« on: Monday 20 May 19 14:33 BST (UK)  »
Anyone familiar with the history of Compton Chamberlayne?
An ancestor died in 1777 and his occupation is recorded in his will as a millwright
I understand a mill was identified in the Domesday records of 1086 and literature says this was removed and another was built in 1635 'north of Compton House at southern end of the Northern lake'.
Ive searched on various oldish maps online but cannot locate exactly where it was located
There is another mill at Dinton that seems to be called Compton Chamberlayne's Mill but this is located further north of the village so I think this is a red herring
I'd very much like to find where this ancestor lived.... can anyone help?
ps
In his will he left leases to 2 houses callled Snooks and Hascalls. Seeing as there were Snook and Haskell families present in the village at this time I assume the cottages were named after these tenants and the names didnt continue for more than a few generations.

Does anyone know if the records of births and burials for Little Staughton Baptist church post 1811 exist? I've found those for 1710-1811 but would like to have a look at later entries
Many thanks
Chris

The Common Room / Ancestry auto renewal
« on: Wednesday 02 September 15 06:46 BST (UK)  »
I've always 'unticked' the box for auto renewal of my subscription to Ancestry so was surprised to find that they've taken the money from my account.
I've recently gone over to the new version and it looks like this overrides the old in terms of being in control of the renewal
Sneeky so and so's

The Common Room / Burial ceremony performed by ?
« on: Monday 10 August 15 11:53 BST (UK)  »
In two burial entries [1904 and 1909] in parish records  for Ellel in Lancashire in the column 'by whom the ceremony was performed' there is entered 'certified by R Stirzaker' and added also to the latter 'special permission given by vicar' . The two people being buried are both Stirzakers [aged 14 & 21] with a father Robert who was a lock keeper and not as far as I can find qualified to perform a burial.
These are the only 2 burials R Stirzaker performed so it's a mystery. Was he their father or maybe a different religion. Any ideas anyone?

Westmorland / James Bolton Orton/Musgrave
« on: Thursday 30 July 15 15:28 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone can help me with this query
According to census returns James Bolton was born 1779/81 in Musgrave. However a Settlement Certificate says his lawful place of settlement was Orton [he lived with his wife and family in Warton, Lancs ]
Has anyone access to either of these villages parish records so as to confirm which entry is correct?

Thanks

Sussex / Cavendish Place North Brighton
« on: Sunday 17 May 15 06:04 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to locate the position of Cavendish Place North in Brighton. From census returns 1851, 1861 it appears to be near Peel Place and Cheapside but in maps I can't find it. In the National Archives there is a purchase of the pub North Star in Peel Place by the railway so I assume that this along with Cavendish Place North was demolished to make way for the railway expansion in the town

Norfolk / Mill - Downham Market
« on: Thursday 30 April 15 09:04 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to ascertain as to whether Heygates Mill which was formerly Birds Mill in Bridge Road was in the 1840's owned by G A Ward Mustard manufacturer & seed merchant.
The person I'm researching, according to his obituary in 1844, worked the steam mill at G A Ward's and was stated in the 1841 census as a mustard manufacturer.
The various trade directories of the time has Ward's in Bridge Road and so I was wondering if it's the same large mill as Heygates/Birds or a smaller one that has no records
