Kincardineshire / Isabel Watson?
« on: Sunday 23 February 14 15:09 GMT (UK)  »
My G-G-G-Grandfather James Gove married Isabel/Isobel/Isabella (Various spellings I've found), Watson on 29th June 1799 in Benholm. I've found that James & his twin Brother John were babtised on 5th May 1776 also in Benholm.

I'm now trying to find out about Isabel. From Scotlands People I've found a possible Isabel Watson, b 27/8/1766 to Andrew Watson &  Elspit Falconer in Bervie.

I'm wondering if I've got the right Isabel, and how could I check?

Any Ideas??

(By concidence, I was also married on 29th June, and my name is James! How spooky is that?)

World War Two / Looking for Margaret Gove - WAAF - WW2
« on: Sunday 29 September 13 20:56 BST (UK)  »
My Mother's youngest Sister, Margaret Gove was in the WAAF during WW2. She died in the 1970's, and although I remember her well, I know nothing of her wartime service, where she was stationed, what she did Etc. Her parents were Munro Gove & Bridget Gove (MS Watt), and she was born in Kincardineshire, Scotland. She never married, and lived in Epsom, Surrey after the war.

Any ideas as to where I might get more information??

TIA
Jim

Armed Forces / Scottish Rifles - Numbers
« on: Saturday 25 February 12 10:50 GMT (UK)  »
My Grandfather, James Irvine joined the Scottish Rifles on 5th Jan 1899.  I have his army records which show his number as 6404.

A second cousin in Australia has a couple of medals which he thinks belonged to my Grandfather.  The only thing is, they have "RX4-199757 PTE.J.IRVINE A.S.C." inscribed round the perimiter.  He has a hand written note that is in the same box which can be tied back to my Grandfather.

His army records show that he was in South Africa & India up to 1907, then transferred to the reserves.  He then went back in 1914 an was sent to France, and discharged in 1916.

There is no mention anywhere in his records of the numbers on the medals, but everything else ties in. Are they his, do you think?

Anybody got any ideas as to how to solve the puzzle?

Thanks
Jim Irvine

Donegal / Thomas Dorian - Bridget Campbell
« on: Sunday 23 October 11 22:05 BST (UK)  »
I started a topic in 2008, see below -

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,278602.msg1622338.html#msg1622338

Since then, I've found out a wee bit more information.

For example, it is Bridget Campbell and not Elizabeth as I first thought.

I've also found a record in the Scottish census of 1861 for Stonehaven, which gives -

Bridget - head, age 44, born Ireland
Nancy - Daughter, age 21, born Ireland
John - Son, age 19, born Ireland
Charles - Son, age 16, born Ireland
Thomas - Son, age 13, born Linlithgowshire - there is no such county in Scotland!
Mary - Daughter , age 8, born Stonehaven.

No mention of Thomas senior. However, on Bridget's death record in 1869, it states that she is married to Thomas Dorian, labourer. This asumes Thomas is still alive otherwise she would be described as "widow of. . ." I can find no death record for Thomas anywhere in Scotland.

I then started looking at the old parish records for Linlithgow (town) area of Scotland for a birth record of Thomas junior, without success. I then wondered if perhaps the family were of the Catholic faith since they came from Ireland, and when I looked at the Catholic archives, BINGO, there he was. There is a record of his birth and baptism it the records of St Francis Xavier's church in Falkirk!

This now leads on to the next questions -

What happened to Thomas senior? Did he go back to Ireland after the death of Bridget, or since Bridget is described as head of the household in the 1861 census, had he "disapeared" prior to this?

My g-grandmother was Agnes Ann Dorian, who would have been the same age as Nancy. Are Agnes and Nancy the same person?

Is there anywhere on line that I can search the Irish Catholic records? I am almost sure that they came originally from Letterkenny in Donegal.

Any help and advice are most welcome.

Jim

Kincardineshire / James Begg-Mary Christison Marriage
« on: Sunday 07 February 10 21:29 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to find any record of a marriage between James Begg and Mary Christison.

Here's what I have so far -
James must have been born around 1788, probably around Angus/Kincardineshire, but if anyone can find a birth record for him I'd be most grateful.

He died on 22 Jan 1859 age 72 when he fell off the gable end of a house that was being demolished in the parish of Fettercairn. His parents are given as James Begg & Margaret Hogg

Mary Christison was born about 1808 in Edzell and died on 23 May 1882 in Fordoun.

They had at least one child, Martha Begg (my G-Grandmother) born 2 Sep 1837 in Fettercairn.

Any information on this family most welcome.

Cheers

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Duncan McKenzie occupation
« on: Saturday 12 December 09 16:13 GMT (UK)  »
The attached is part of the marriage record of Peter McKenzie & Hellen Low.
Peter's parents are Duncan McKenzie & Mary Littlejohn, but what is Duncan's occupation?

Looks like "Mafson (deceased)" to me.

I thought "Mason", but the third letter looks life a "f".

Any ideas?

Armed Forces / Names on war memorials
« on: Tuesday 24 November 09 19:57 GMT (UK)  »
How does one find out more about the names on war memorials?

Who compiled the lists of names, and can they still be found?

Let's say I go to some village where I think one of my ancestors may be commerated, but there are 2 (or more) A. Smith's, or whatever. How do I find out which, or indeed if any, of them are mine?

Any help much appreciated.

Jim
