The Common Room / Dutch speaker needed please
« on: Monday 08 June 15 18:22 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I have an ongoing and interesting (I think so, anyway!) family history quest for which I've been directed to a site of digitised Dutch newspapers. Is there anyone who can read Dutch and would search them for me? Obviously I will explain it all.
Thanks in advance

Lancashire / Missing Lawes child, 1911 Blackburn
« on: Thursday 28 May 15 00:01 BST (UK)  »
In the 1911 census for Blackburn Robert Leonard Lawes and his wife Mary (nee Cross) claim to have one child born and still living. But this unknown child is not with them, nor with any other relatives such as grandparents that I know of. I cannot find its birth as there are too many Lawes births in the time-frame to know which it is. Does anyone know this family or is maybe a descendant?
Robert Leonard Lawes is the son of Robert Morrow Lawes and Sarah Ann nee Prosser.
Thanks, Ebba

Europe / What German place is this?
« on: Wednesday 07 May 14 12:51 BST (UK)  »
An ancestor emigrated to Australia in 1891 and in 1897 married Valentine Jacob Herman(n) in Charters Towers, Queensland. Valentine was German and I attach a part of a photo of his naturalisation application in the hope somebody might identify his place of origin.
Lockland Sauht See? It makes no sense to me as a German place. He arrived on HMS Conflict in August 1880 and disembarked at Cooktown. Could this place-name be not somewhere in Germany but somewhere else en route? Could 'Sauht See' be a German understanding of 'South Sea'?
There are so many possibilities, including his dodgy spelling.
I have tried to find a list of voyages for the Conflict that might give ports of call, but cannot find any so far.
I believe the S at the beginning of 'Sauht' is an S and not an L as it's the same as the S at the beginning of Sydney further down the document.
I do not need any genealogical information, I have plenty of that, but would like to clear up this place name.
Thanks in advance for any help,
Ebba

World War Two / Getting injured service personnel back to the UK
« on: Wednesday 07 May 14 11:51 BST (UK)  »
Some 10 years ago my late father wrote out his experiences of doing his National Service (1948-1950) in a Military Hospital. Among his clearest memories are going several times to Southampton to get sick and injured servicemen off ships and send them on to other hospitals in the UK. Given that this was at least 3 years after the end of war I'm wondering why it took so long to get them back. I understand that many were in far-flung places, but even so...
Can anybody tell me more about this?
Thanks, Ebba

Worcestershire / Hanks family of Alvechurch/Bromsgrove
« on: Thursday 24 April 14 00:21 BST (UK)  »
I have been searching for years for the descendants of Elsie Ellen Bishop and her husband Felix Alfred Hanks, who married in the Bromsgrove registration district in 1921. Felix was the son of Edith and James Hanks (baker), and in 1936 his occupation was dairyman.
Elsie and Felix Hanks had children John (1922), Kenneth (1925), Margaret Catherine (1929), and Christine Elaine (1936). They are my father's cousins and I have a certain amount of information on them all which I will not write here as they may be still living. I know of Christine's marriage, and of at least one child (born 1946) of Margaret's first marriage. I believe John was in the Marines and served in WW2 in the Arctic Convoys. In particular I would be greatly interested to know what became of Christine, who could not be found even back in 1979 when she was due  a very small inheritance.

Completed Census Requests / Missing year date on messages?
« on: Sunday 17 November 13 11:03 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
I'm finding it quite frustrating that although posted messages have dates and times I can't find the year of posting. This can make quite a difference to whether somebody is still researching something, or has made huge progress since the posting, or maybe even has disappeared from the forum.
Is it me? Is the year actually there somewhere and I'm missing it?

The Common Room / Family moved from London to Bristol
« on: Thursday 07 November 13 20:47 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone offer any sensible suggestions why my ancestors upped sticks from London and moved to Bristol, of all places, between about 1852-1854? They are an interesting family as father was Jewish and mother of Scandinavian (probably Swedish) descent. They were definitely only just holding things together financially as they lived in the very poor area around Covent Garden and Drury Lane (London). When they married they already had one son aged 9 and went on to have 3 daughters.
My thoughts/questions are: why leave London at all? All family and friends were there. I can find absolutely no connection to Bristol, or family there.
They did not profit financially as father kept the same job (picture frame maker) and they were as poor in Bristol as they had been in London. Mother died of consumption some time later.
If it was for health reasons, why go to Bristol and not some seaside place?
Surely it cannot be from the 'shame' of having an illegitimate child or being unmarried as why wait 9 years?
There was a small Jewish community in Bristol but parents (eventually) married in C of E and all children were later baptised.
I also wonder how much it would have cost them to buy the train tickets - how did they afford the journey?
Any ideas, please?
Thanks, Ebba

The Common Room / Family name change - and back again!
« on: Tuesday 22 September 09 17:51 BST (UK)  »
Dear All
I'd really like some opinions on why this family changed their name, and then changed it back again. Here's the info:

1841 census: Henry AHRENS aged 27, wife Elenor aged 25 and baby son John aged 2 are in St George in the East, London (looks like Salters Alley)

1851 census: Henry HORN aged 36, wife Elenor aged 34, and children John 11, James 9, Elenor 7 and Elizabeth are in Bethnal Green (50 Gibraltar Walk)

1861 census: Henry HORN 45, Eleanor 44, James 19, Eleanor 17 and Elizabeth 14 are at 46 Underwood Street, Stepney

1871 census: Henry AHRENS 54, Elleanor 54 and daughter Elleanor 27 are in Mile End Old Town. Elleanor jr has married Henry Holdstock and he is also here with their children Henry 5 and Elleanor 10 months.

1881 - no trace under any name

1891 census: Eleanor (spelled as Eleanorer) AHRENS, widow aged 74, is at 17 Gwynne Road Battersea.

One good reason I know it's the same family and not a series of weird coincidences is that I have Henry & Eleanor's marriage certificate so I know her maiden name was Soderberg(h), and in 1853 they were witnesses at the wedding of her sister. On the certificate both bride & groom give their address as 46 Underwood Street (Henry & Eleanor Horn's address in 1861).

I can understand them changing their name, especially from Ahrens which is difficult and German, but why change it back again?
Any ideas, please?!

World War One / West Yorkshire Regiment
« on: Tuesday 22 September 09 17:21 BST (UK)  »
My grandfather served in the W Yorks Regiment and luckily lived to tell the tale. Unfortunately, pretty much all he ever said about it was that he led a team of pack horses in Italy. Does anyone know where I can find out more about this?
Thanks
