Suffolk / Mary Steadman & John Crispe
« on: Sunday 18 November 12 16:06 GMT (UK)  »
I have Mary Steadman, born in Raydon in 1695.
She married John Crispe in 1722 in Raydon.
They had their family in Great Wenham.
Can anyone throw any light in their parentage?
Many thanks for reading this.

Suffolk / Does anyone know Abigail?
« on: Tuesday 09 October 12 16:24 BST (UK)  »
I have an Abigail Parker who was born in 1669 in Elmswell and was married in Troston in 1698 to Henry Bantock. I can find no actual records for Abigail, and as the 1st child I have for the couple is Mary in 1689 (d 1700) then a long gap till Thomas in 1699, I wonder if these dates are correct. ???
I'd be grateful for any information.

Northumberland / Dancing in Slaley
« on: Thursday 13 September 12 14:54 BST (UK)  »
One of the aspects of Family Tree research I enjoy is learning about our ancestors occupations! Today I came across one I hadn't come seen before!
I was checking the records for Slaley in the Durham Bishops Transcripts. I came across this -
Feb 25 1771
'Then was Baptized John the son of William Durick and Mary his wife a Travelling Dancing Master and Mistress. Note the said John was Born at the Chapple House in Hexham-shire.'
I have come across itinerant workers before, but this is a new one. I wonder how they introduced themselves, touted for business, and what they did for music!
Liz

PS
I've just come across -
Baptism at Slaley for 1770
May 9 Then there was baptised James son of James Taylor & Christian his wife Strangers and Travellers
Burials at Slaley for 1782
Jan 31 Mary Broadwood, a Sojourner
How was Slaley such a magnet for the Wanderers!

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Can We Decipher Mary's Birthplace?
« on: Wednesday 12 September 12 16:41 BST (UK)  »
Hi, please can you help me with the birthplace of Mary Chicken,( born Swinburn)1843, wife of Thomas, 1841?
in 1871 she  is living inMonkwearmouth Durham,  is born in Northumberland, in  ??? Morpeth, but from then on - the names are very variable
in 1881 it could be Harkfen
in 1891, it has been deciphered as Needlepchale
In 1901 the Welsh recorders didn't do any better than those in Durham & came up with - Needlip Halimon
in 1911 - it was Wodlen Hall Moor.
I presume it's near Morpeth, but even scrutinising maps hasn't helped. ???
Thanks

Northumberland / Boags & Chickens of Newcastle upon Tyne
« on: Tuesday 28 August 12 15:36 BST (UK)  »
Hi David, hope your Charleton quest has gone well. I said I'd start a new topic for Boags as people won't be looking for Boags under Charleton. This may help others, too.

Your Frederick's Dad & Mum were
William Boag bapt 28 Jan 1822 Newcastle
Isabella Chicken bapt 1 Mar 1818 All Saints Newcastle
they married on 23 Aug 1836 at St John's
& had 8 known children,
Hannah 1836 - 91
Ambrose 1844 - 71
Mary Ann 1846 - 68
Thomas 1851 - 61
John 1853 - 94
Elizabeth 1855 - 92
Frederick 1857 - 1902
Frances 1860 - 64
On the 1841 Census, William is a Coffee Roaster
from then on, on the 1851 1861 1871 William is a Bill Poster. Interesting that it was a full time occupation which supported a family and Ambrose and John followed their Dad and became Bill Posters too.
That led me on to other jobs - I looked on the 1851 Census for Laidlaw Court, Manors where William & Isabella lived - there were 32 people doing such things as Cattle Dealer, Bread Baker, Straw Bonnet Maker, Brass Founder, Tailor, Carpenter, Potter, Char Woman & Errand Boy. (I don't know how many rooms the 32 people lived in.)
In 1861 The family lives at 3, Manors. 35 people this time - Dressmaker, Grocer, Seamstress, Joiner, Bricklayer, Coach  Smith, Chain Maker, Tripe Dealer, Charwoman, Draper.
Interesting that all these people doing such different jobs lived together is what was probably very crowded accommodation.
Have you access to the Census returns?
I'll put William and Isabella's parents on next time :)

Northumberland / Hartley Widow
« on: Saturday 04 August 12 16:56 BST (UK)  »
Anyone who has researched relatives in the Northumbrian mines will have heard of the Hartley Pit Disaster of 1862, where 204 men and boys were killed.

I have a distant relative who died down there - Winship Jack (or Jaques), who was my 1st cousin 3x removed.

I have always wondered what happened to his widow. Elizabeth Jaques (nee Wanlass ). She lost her husband and 3 brothers in the disaster. How on earth did she cope?

Elizabeth & Winship (named for his mother's maiden name) married on Earsdon on 23 May 1857. She was left with three little girls,  Isabella 1857, Ann 1859, and Elizabeth 1860. I can find no sign of them. I presume Elizabeth married again.

There is an Elizabeth Bruce living with a Thomas and Mary Wanlass in 1871, but the ages of the Bruce children don't fit with her marrying again, and the three girls aren't there.

Has anyone come across Elizabeth or her girls?

Northumberland / Fairbridges in Ovingham
« on: Tuesday 31 July 12 16:49 BST (UK)  »
Please does anyone know where I can find Ovingham on the Durham Bishops Transcripts?

I'm looking for the Fairbridge family.

William Fairbridge was born c 1700, so his birth may not be there. If anyone can go further back, I'd be grateful.

Northumberland / cemetary?
« on: Thursday 05 July 12 17:22 BST (UK)  »
I know that there was no church at Matfen until 1842, for baptisms and marriages.
and the villagers had to travel to Stamforham.
Would the dead be buried at Stamforham too? Is there any record of the names of the graveyards?

Thanks in advance

Perthshire / Stewart - Reidough
« on: Thursday 05 July 12 16:29 BST (UK)  »
Hello, I'm finding that many of my roots go to Scotland, even though I was born south of the border.

Can anyone give me a marriage date for
Walter Stewart, 3rd Laird of Baldorran and Euphemia Reidough, of Cultobraggon?

It could be around 1505.

Any other dates or information would be appreciated

Thanks
Liz
