Devon Lookup Requests / Elizabeth Henrietta Finch (or Ward) of Plymouth
« on: Monday 13 September 21 12:31 BST (UK)  »
Following on from my Phillips baptisms query of Dec 2019, still looking for Elizabeth Henrietta Finch born Plymouth 1875 Q3 in 1901 and 1911 censuses. She has 2 children by William Ward Hayden Phillips, Dorothy 1897 born Totnes and Nita born December 1898 and registered January 1899 when address is 7 Melbourne Mansions, Fulham. Birth certificates gives childrens surname as Ward (not Phillips). By 1901 census the 2 girls are visitors with Laskey family in Plymouth (haven't found any connection between Finch and Laskey). By 1911 census the 2 girls are pupils at a school in Essex.
Can't find any trace of Elizabeth Henrietta as Finch or Ward or Phillips in 1901 or 1911 or any obvious marriage or death or emigration. Father of girls never married her and died prior to 1901 census. His relations never mention girls in wills etc.

How to Use RootsChat (Please don't post requests here) / Members ready to help you!
« on: Thursday 09 September 21 10:58 BST (UK)  »
Am I the only person watching the number of members ready to help you message as the number increases! It's interesting to see presumably new members joining all the time. Just waiting for it to hit 280,000 now.
But - does anyone ever get removed? If someone dies and notification is passed on do they get removed from this number? How many of the 279,000 plus are active or have logged in in say the last 12 months?

Cheshire Lookup Requests / William Ormson - Altrincham
« on: Wednesday 14 October 20 15:33 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone find me William Ormson in 1891 census? In 1881 he is with parents at Sinderland and is joiner aged 24. He marries 19 March 1894 at St Lukes, Weaste (Salford) to Jane Taylor of Altrincham. His address is just given as Weaste. Have searched Lancashire and Cheshire 1891 with no success, also rest of census. By 1901 he is back in Altrincham area where he lives until death in 1936.
Note he is not the William Ormson of Norbury/Hazel Grove.

The Stay Safe Board / Track and trace
« on: Tuesday 25 August 20 11:08 BST (UK)  »
Government rules say cafes, restaurants etc should keep a list of customer contact details for 21 days so people can be notified if someone tests positive later for corona virus.
Note the word "should" - I have been surprised that various establishments do not do this eg M&S cafe - I asked environmental health and they said it was guidance not law so didn't have to be done!
Meanwhile local cafes are going the extra mile and taking these details.
Costa coffee yesterday just has a QR code on a poster that you are meant to scan - didn't see anyone do it  - and I hadn't got my phone on me anyway.
So basically it is going to be very hit and miss whether you are contacted!

The Stay Safe Board / Holidays situation Wales
« on: Sunday 16 August 20 13:10 BST (UK)  »
Went to Wales on holiday last week so thought would tell you what it was like.
Renting a house - had to arrive after 4 on Saturday as per property owner, though company website said after 6. (We got there 5.15 and got in ok). House had hand sanitiser inside entrance and had had cushions, books, cds, etc etc removed. Also had to take own towels (normally take them anyway) and bed linen(but that's normal for that house).
Natives not generally wearing masks, only the English. Queueing, entry number restrictions in shops as per England.
Beaches pretty busy, some groups of several families together but plenty of room if you made the effort to find somewhere a bit away from groups. Lifeboat station not open to visitors.
Had takeaway food a couple of nights, went in, ordered , then queued outside to wait for it.
Had coffee at Costa but the only contact tracing wanted you to scan QR code on phone, no handwritten details taken - but then our local M&S cafe does not take your details - yet garden centres do!
On departure had to open windows.
Fortunately weather was generally very good so none of the 30 degree plus the South sweltered in  so all in all a very good week and just glad to be away for first time this year - only downside was we normally have 6 or 8 of us with family, grandchildren etc but they thought it too much of a risk so the 2 of us had a much quieter time than usually. Hopefully they will be back with us there next year!

The Common Room / Yelverton as middle name
« on: Saturday 04 July 20 12:34 BST (UK)  »
Am researching for a friend. Her ancestor has middle name YELVERTON yet we don't know why and can't find any links with the places of that name in Norfolk and Devon. There are no connections with any Yelvertons as far as we can see. Father of this ancestor was butler near Woodstock, Oxfordshire.
Any ideas why they would suddenly come up with this as middle name?
