Armed Forces / William Kelly, Private 13th Foot
« on: Sunday 03 February 19 20:11 GMT (UK)  »
I have hit a brick wall with a Great Aunt (Ellen Cannon b.1841 Birmingham) and her husband William Kelly, who born circa 1840 according to their marriage certificate (they married in B'ham in 1868).

William was a 'Private 13th Foot' at the time of their marriage which I believe was the Somerset Light Infantry. Excuse my ignorance but would he have been likely to have joined this regiment because he was from Somerset?  I am struggling to find William before 1868 and both of them after the marriage in 1868 (I have Ellen in all census's up to this point and her baptism details etc).

When I search military records there are so many 'William Kelly's'... would he have changed regiments at all depending upon which conflict he was taking part in?  I don't know anything else about him other than his father was a James Kelly who was a Blacksmith (also according to the marriage cert).

Any help pointing me in the right direction would be gratefully appreciated.

Many thanks

I've attached a copy of my great gran's baptism record; she is Sarah Jane Harris of Hatton, Warwickshire but I can't quite decipher all of the comments (about her father?) that have been noted on the record.

I would as usual be grateful if anyone is able to help.

Warwickshire / Whatever happened to Mary Hickey b.1857
« on: Wednesday 16 January 19 22:28 GMT (UK)  »
My gt grand-aunt was Mary Hickey, born circa 1857 in B'ham, Baptised at St Chad's B'ham on 2nd Feb 1857.  She appears on census's from 1861-1891 living with her parents Catharine and Patrick & siblings at various addresses around the Jewellery Quarter and Hockley.  At 1881 she is listed as a 'gilt toy maker' and the last census entry for her is at 1891 where she is living with her widowed mother Catharine Hickey in Pope Street.  At 1901, her mother assumes her maiden name of Cannon (as does her daughter Annie Hickey b.1877) living at Hockley Street with various grandchildren (none of whom are Mary's) but Mary isn't with her.

I'm unable to find Mary from 1901 onwards in census forms, electoral rolls or marriage / death certificates.

There is a Mary Ann Hickey (occupier) in a 1901 Rate Book at 5 house, court 14 74 New Summer Street but she doesn't appear here on the census...  strangely enough her younger sister Catherine Jukes (nee Hickey) does appear at the same address (except she lives in 8 house) as a boarder at the 1901 census so I'm assuming it's my Mary.

There are various other Mary's from 1901 onwards that I've found but none fit her age or status (most are married to a Hickey / Hickie).

Can anyone throw any light on my brickwall please?

Many thanks

I have a handful of photo's (sent from Street as postcards and enclosed in written correspondence) to 'Auntie Jinny and Uncle Charlie' who are my gt grandparents from 'Hilda' and 'Millie' whom I believe are 2 of the younger women in some of the photo's.  The young lad is 'Lennie' and I know that Millie married a Charlie and they had a son Ken.

My problem is finding out who they are and trying to find a family with a Hilda and a Millie (who could be Amelia, Millicent, Mildred, Emily or just Millie) so it would help if I could date the photo to give the family approximate ages.

The first photo is a small glossy white bordered photo; on the rear it says 'this is a snap at Weymouth'.  I believe the woman on the left to be Hilda and the boy 3rd left to be Lennie.

The 2nd photo is the same size and description as above; on the rear it says 'we took Len away for week at Weymouth August'.  I believe Len is the boy on the left.

The 3rd photo (in the field setting) I believe the young woman standing 3rd from the left is Hilda, Millie is possibly the female standing 3rd from the right and Lennie is sitting (this is an unwritten postcard).

The 4th picture is I believe Millie and Charlie's wedding.  Hilda is seated next to Charlie and Lennie is seated in front.  My gt grandfather is the gent standing at the rear, 5th from the right next to the chap in the bowler hat (my gt grandfather was born in 1878).

Many thanks for reading this and getting this far !  ;D

Somerset / Street, Somerset

Could anyone identify where in Street 'Dove Cottages' might be please?  It is on a postcard sent from members of my family in Street to family in Birmingham in 1931.

This photo was taken in Newport, Isle of Wight and is mounted with no border on thick white card (there is nothing printed on the back).

I believe the 2 ladies are my gt grandfather's older sisters, Hannah and Fanny Lovesey from Cropthorne  / Charlton in Worcestershire.

I know that Hannah who was born in 1863 was in Service in Sandown, IoW at the 1891 census; Fanny was born in 1872.  I believe the ages look about right for them if the photo was taken around 1891; I just wasn't sure whether their attire fitted that period.

The other alternative is that it is my gt grandfather's aunt Frances (Fanny) Stephens who in 1866 married Frank Woodford in the IoW and after his demise married Obed Jackman in 1878, also in the IoW.  Frances was born in 1837 in Ashton under Hill, Gloucs and died in the IoW in 1911...  she had several older sisters and one younger sister.  I am unable to find Frances at the 1861 census (but I'm trying various permutations); might this be her?

Many thanks in anticipation of any help received.

This is my friend's grandfather Thomas Bernard Cox born 1899; she believes he was a stretcher bearer due to the 'cross badge' on his arm but would like to know if anyone is able to enlighten us from the attached photographs  (he's the one on the left in the 2nd photo).

Many thanks

Mayo / Margaret Scanlon of Carrowniskey
« on: Saturday 28 December 13 20:27 GMT (UK)  »
I have a Margaret Scanlon who married Walter Cox in 1912 (registered at Westport)... Walter's family were from the Devlin area and Margaret was believed to be from the Carrowniskey area of Mayo.  Unsure of exactly when she was born but it was possibly around 1880-1884 but I'm having trouble locating any baptism records for her...  She is possibly the Margaret Scanlon age 30 at Fermoyle in 1911.

Any advice gratefully accepted thanks.

Nell  :)
