Nottinghamshire / Ordsall Church, Retford - 1884 onwards
« on: Saturday 23 April 05 14:52 BST (UK)  »
hello all,
I have found some references to the parishioners (?sp) and choir and some of the church clergy in a prayer book that belongs to my father.
It was originally owned by a Charles L Skelps (not sure if this surname is right - the writing is very old!), of lichfield Theological College, and was passed on to an ancestor of mine - Alonzo King.  The original owner made lots of notes about the choir - including a register of attendees - some of the names include Appleby, Powell, King, Haslam, Bamforth, Hinde, Goodwin, Bell, Benson, Banks, Brett, Glasby, Rowland, Cooper. It seems to cover 1884 and the following couple of years, although there is no date reference to the subsequent years they appear to follow on from the 1884 register.
There is also copious notes relating to obituaries from 1884 onwards - far too many names to mention!

If anyone has any rels who were baptised/buried/married at Ordsall Church around  1884 onwards then drop me an email, they may very well be mentioned in it!  There arent too many personal details that would help identify anyone, just mentions things like "Fred Bloggs, plumber, died jan xx 1885 after a long and painful illness. buried january 1885 athe cemetary. I and  Charles XXX were bearers."  and " John xxxx dies january 1885, interred at ordsall jan 8 1885 - myself and B roberts appoited by ???? to adminser the funeral money"

so, fire away...might take me a while to figure out the writing, but i will try.
and if anyone has any contacts with ordsall church, please let me know!

The Common Room / 'bumping' into distant relatives!!
« on: Sunday 16 January 05 13:18 GMT (UK)  »
just thought id share what has been a very bizarre last couple of days for me.
Have been mainly using the internet to do my family tree, over the last couple of years i have found out quite a bit of info, but not in quite the detail i wanted.  Anyway, went into my local studies library on thursday, and whilst being shown by  the historian how to use the electoral register microfiche happened to mention the surname i was looking up.  ''ooh'' she says, ''we have a @@@@@ working here, i'll get him to pop over and see you when he gets here''. unusual surname i was researching.....and lo and behold he and i are related!! going back many generations, on our fathers' sides,  gggf's are brothers!!!
of all the librarys in all the world , i walk into his!!!

second EXTREMELY bizarre situation happened at work on friday! Im a nurse, and was looking after a group of patients, when i noticed one lady had a very familiar name...checked date of birth and next of kin, had a call from another of her sons, and lo and behold it was my aunty who i havent seen for 20 odd years!!!! she and my father are brother and sister....I lost touch with my dad many many years ago, and so lost touch with his side of the family too.  HUGE family reunion....and the best bit, today i talked to my dad for the first time in 10 years!!!!
my children now have a grandad, i have a very caring family (I was overwhelmed by their affection towards me!)....and a long christmas list once again!!!!

one of my cousins' daughters is just starting her family tree research, so I have lots of info to share if she wants it, plus the distant cousin at the library is willing to share any info i want.....!!!!!

what a fantastic couple of days!!

Completed Census Requests / familysearch.org - question about...
« on: Wednesday 27 October 04 22:28 BST (UK)  »
hello all!
I wonder if anyone can help - I have been using the above site to search for any family of a couple of surnames.....the one I have just searched for is Booth.
Using just the surname and country search it obviously returned with thousands of entries...and when i searched through one of the lists - IGI - it stopped at 5000, at Cheshire. which is no good for me cos i want the county near the end of the list!!! similar happened when i searched another surname and searched through the ancestral file part...gives you only so many.
seems such a waste of time....i spent an hour looking through this list only to be stopped half way through!
Does this happen to anyone else or is it just me?
Am I doing something wrong?
Or am I expecting too much from an international site that must get thousands of hits every minute??
any advice/help would be gratefully received!!!!!!!!
cheers

Completed Census Requests / 1891 census - sheffield please
« on: Wednesday 27 October 04 10:53 BST (UK)  »
hello,
i wonder if i could beg another look up please?
Im trying to find a family called Booth...got a household record on 1881 census, but they seem to have disappeared in the 1891 cnesus.
from the 1881 census;
head - Aaron Booth  age 62 born Eckington,York, england
wife - Frances Ann Booth age 48 born sheffield, york, england
daur - Emily Booth age 13 born sheffield, york, england
dwelling at this point 58 Furnival Street, Sheffield.

i cant find any reference of either birth or death of Aaron or Frances,
by the 1901 census Emily was married to George Rodwell, but no reference to Frances still being alive.

im getting really frustrated with this side of the family (my mothers grand mother is emily)!

many thanks for looking..

Completed Census Requests / 1837online/census lookup please
« on: Saturday 09 October 04 22:51 BST (UK)  »
hello all,
i wonder if anyone can help me? Im trying to trace my mums father, but have had no luck in finding any trace of him.
His name in John Pyne (was originally spelt pine, but the family story goes someone changed it to p -y - ne to make it sound posher!). We think his date of birth is 15.03.1889, but it may be 1891 as his age on his marriage certificate (to ruth rodwell in 1921) is 2 years adrift of my mums recollection of his date of birth. My mum isnt sure where he was born...she mentions irish tinkers in his family, but has recollection of his family living in Ruabon in Wales. I cant find any reference to his birth anywhere....He was married in Sheffield, and died in sheffield in the 1950s.
He had a sister, Elizabeth who was born mid 1890s, and a brother Thomas, born around 1891.
On his marriage certificate in 1921, it states his fathers name was also John Pyne.
Can anyone help with an 1837online or census look up?, or have any advice on where I should look next?
Thanks in anticipation,

Sue
