The Lighter Side / A Challenge for anyone with nothing better to do just now.

Hi,
I came across this on my local news channel, since we don't get a lot of chatters from the US I thought this might get a few people out of their comfort zone.

Technical Help / The Dreaded Black Screen....HELP please.
« on: Sunday 12 August 12 11:54 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,
my main computer looks dead.  :-\ All I have is a black screen with a small white bar blinking in the  top left corner.
The blinking bar makes me think I might be able to type in some DOS command, but I don't remember how.
Any help at all would be MOST appreciated.
Thanks,
Leonie.

Technical Help / Please recomend a good, simple, free webspace.
« on: Tuesday 10 July 12 09:34 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,
I volunteer for a group who've had some gov. funding but no longer have that suport. So we're looking for a new place to set up a free web page/ internet site that's easy to work with.
I have my own with yuku but don't think this is what we want. I've looked, so far, at Weebly, but that's as far as I've gone.
Any sugestions would be most gratefully accepted.

Hi all,
would there be a death certificate for this death in 1792?
And if so, would it be likely to have her parent's names and how would I find it?
Thanks,
Leonie.

Australia / John CORBETT 1840-1871 Murdered in Queensland.
« on: Saturday 14 April 12 08:06 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,
I have a knife with the name B.E.CORBETT, possibly branded but could be engraved, on the handle. It was found (120 years later) within about half a mile of the grave of John CORBETT who was killed by natives in 1871.
The headstone at the grave site was erected by his brother Patrick, their father was also Patrick. So the knife didn't belong to any of these three.
However, I can't find any other family members who might have given John the knife, or even in fact if the knife did belong to John when he was murdered. Anyone living in the area could have been named CORBETT, but it's a bit of a coincidence and a lot of a mystery.
I'm still working on the origins of the knife, the hallmarks are quite clear and that shouldn't be a problem.
But I'd really like to know the story of this knife.

FH Documents and Artefacts / Help with Hallmarks Please.
« on: Sunday 08 April 12 05:42 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,
I have three pieces of cutlery I'd like to identify. They are not a set, but my husband has put them into a single box for display. I think they are two cake lifters and a cake knife, maybe not, but they look OK together.
The first piece, a cake lifter or spoon, has the marks;
WP in a crown - EP in a shield - Prince of Wales Feathers in a circle - what looks like stylised P o W Feathers  or single wheat sheaf  in a heart - B in a diamond. (capital B with serifs)
I'm just thinking it might be best if I do these separately to save confusion.
I'll also add photos and dimensions.
The Prince of Wales Feathers is not something I've seen before in English Hallmarks, so I'm intrigued.

The Common Room / Apprenticeships. Help please.
« on: Monday 19 March 12 02:09 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,
I've spent a lot of time going through lists and links, (what would we do without Berlin Bob ??? ) but I can't find a link or any sort of direction to an apprenticeship list.
I know there is some sort of list at the Nat. Archives, somewhere, but have never been able to work with that web-site. Very frustrating.
Can someone please help me find a list?
I'm looking for some sort of proof that John RYLAND was an apprentice engraver about 1770-77, and who he was apprenticed to.
As usual there will be a reward (  ;D ) for any information. Seriously, I'll be most greatful for any help I recieve.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Is this latin? Help please.
« on: Wednesday 29 February 12 11:03 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,
the date given for Mary Skivington is 20 Mar 1738, but the actual written record doesn't have a date.
Is the wording Latin for Ditto? I haven't seen it before.
Thanks for looking,
Leonie.
