Somerset / Elizabeth Mitchell born about 1822 Merriott
« on: Monday 20 June 22 14:44 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I’ve never been able to find birth details of my 2 x great grandmother Elizabeth Mitchell. She appears in the 1861 census after her marriage in 1848 in Marylebone, London, to my 2 x great grandfather George Elliott (born about 1815 in Ilchester, Somerset). In 1861 her place of birth is given as Merriott, Somerset, birth year 1822. Their marriage certificate gives her father as Alexander Mitchell, farmer.
Any help would be appreciated

Bedfordshire / Thomas and Mary Peacock
« on: Saturday 05 April 14 17:34 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
Having seen the post from Mike (xpq194z) about his Peacock family reminded me about the Thomas and Mary Peacock with whom my great grandmother Louisa Crowsley was living in Bedford on the 1851 and 1861 censuses.  Thomas was born c.1814 and Mary c.1810, both in Elstow.  Several years ago I got help with finding out more about Thomas, for which I was very grateful.

However, I never solved why Louisa was listed on the censuses as "niece", I couldn't find a connection, except that they all came from Elstow (Louisa was baptised there in 1842).  I have recently been looking again at the Crowsley family and noticed that Louisa's father William, baptised 1821 in Elstow, had a sister Mary, born c.1808? Elstow, and wonder if it was she who married Thomas Peacock, making Louisa their niece.  But I haven't been able to find such a marriage.  Can anyone help?

Hi,
I have tried several times recently to attach photos to posts, but each time I get a message saying there is already a file with the same name.  I don't know how to change a file name, so give up in frustration!  I expect it's my lack of skills, so would be glad of assistance!

London and Middlesex / John Henry Conquest, born 1875, Stoke Newington
« on: Tuesday 14 May 13 16:08 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I have a puzzle about the death year of John Henry Conquest.  A death record gives his death date as April/May/June quarter 1954 in Islington, but a probate record states he died 1 June 1964 at the Royal Northern Hospital, Islington.   Everything else seems to add up, except this ten year difference.
I wonder which is right?

Northamptonshire / Edwin Arthur Conquest, born 1870, died 1938
« on: Friday 12 April 13 15:57 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I've discovered that Edwin Arthur Conquest, my great uncle, died, according to his probate record, on 12 April 1938, at LMS Railway Station, Isham, Northamptonshire.  The family story is that he fell from a train, but we have no other details.
Is there any way of finding out more?  I assume there must have been an inquest, and wonder whether this would have been reported in a local newspaper.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi
I'm trying to find my gt grandfather William Conquest and family in 1891 census.  From an electoral roll entry on Ancestry I know he was living at 8 Laurel Terrace, Camberwell, that year, but cannot find them in the census.  His wife was Louisa, born 1842 in Kempston, Beds, and children Edwin, Henry, Alfred and Katherine.
Hoping someone can help, thank you in advance.

Bedfordshire / William Crowsley, born about 1774
« on: Friday 29 March 13 19:48 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I have always thought that William Crowsley, my 3 x great grandfather, was born in Elstow, about 1774, although I've never found a record of his baptism. 1841 census gives his place of birth as Bedfordshire. However, I have just come across his second marriage to Elizabeth Smith at Elstow in 1797 in Pallot's Marriage Index which says he is 'of Lewes, Sussex'.  I wonder if this means he was working there, it seems a long way away from Elstow in those times.
I realise we shall never know the answer, but wonder what thoughts Rootschatters might have.

Bedfordshire / Conquest family in Bedfordshire
« on: Thursday 15 November 12 13:08 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,
For some years I have been researching my Conquest ancestors and have made very good progress, but have never been able to get back further than Thomas Conquest born about 1706 in Cardington, married to Judith Bettle.  However, since getting on line at home, rather than using library computers, I have subscribed to Ancestry, where several trees have this branch going back to Sir Richard Conquest of Houghton Conquest and further.
I can't find anyone with any evidence of the truth of this, and I am sceptical about it.
I wonder what other Rootschatters think.

Canada / Louisa Conquest, b.1842, to Canada 1908
« on: Thursday 03 September 09 18:25 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I've just discovered that my gt. grandmother Louisa Conquest, born 1842, Kempston, Bedfordshire, went to Canada, arriving in Montreal on 12 June 1908. I have found her on the 1911 Canada census, living with son Henry James, born 1875, Lambeth, and Katharine, born 1883, Camberwell.

She must have come back to England some time after 1911 census, as I have found her arriving back in Montreal on 19 October 1912.

Is there any way of finding out when she died, and also what might have happened to Henry and Katharine?  In 1911 they were both single, Louisa a widow (her husband William died in December 1908).

Thanks, Ann
