Completed Census Requests / Query about Ancestry
« on: Saturday 21 November 09 23:55 GMT (UK)  »
My cousin belongs to Ancestry and has been doing our family tree on there, she invited me to look at it and I have been on there many times checking out new content as I get an automatic e-mail to say new content has been added.  I do not subscribe to Ancestry but it has never been a problem doing this however this time it won't let me look unless I subscribe.

Does anyone know if they have recently changed the rules and is there anyway round this without paying out to join as I can't afford it at the moment.

Sussex Lookup Requests / 1901 census look up please
« on: Saturday 14 November 09 18:28 GMT (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone would be kind enough to look up a Stephen Dowdy born 1896.

I have looked at the free part of the census and have him age 4 born Sussex Wildhams Wood but would love to know what his parents names and ages  are.  There should be at least one other child Nora or Norah birth about 1900.

I hope someone can help, thank you.

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / searching for missing charles
« on: Thursday 15 January 09 19:54 GMT (UK)  »
I wonder if some kind person with access to 1901 census would havea little look for the following person.

Charles (possibly George as middle name) Edwards born in 1898 I think in or around Eastborne.  I have tried to find him in FBMD ann the IGI to no avail and wondered ifhe would pop up age  about 3 in the 1901 census.  It would be great to find his parents names as we could then maybe track back from there.

He is not my relative but  have bored the wotsits off my workmate by going on about family history and now she is interested and gave me this to work on.  I smugly said we will have a look in FBMD and then go on to IGI and soon have some clues. Armed with his info we got on the pc at work (in our break time of course) it will  teach me not to try and be so clever as there was no sign of him that I could find.

So please please help me out so that  can take something in for her tomorrow or she wll think I am all puff and wind and even if thats true no point in proving it.  Seriously though we are great mates and I would love to give her some decent information.

The Common Room / Quick question
« on: Thursday 27 November 08 19:51 GMT (UK)  »
On a marriage certificate, if the father is deceased does it always say so.
We know an uncle died in 1941 yet we believe we have the marriage certificate of his son in 1958 and it doesn't have deceased by the fathers name.

World War Two / What does this mean
« on: Thursday 11 September 08 23:37 BST (UK)  »
Could anyone tell me what W/CQMS means. The gentleman belonged to 249 Field Coy RE Airborne unit.  I have tried googling but although there are the same lettes after peoples names it doesn't say what it means.

I did wonder if maybe it referred to a quartermaster and hope someone here can tell me.  Thank you.

World War Two / wartime maps
« on: Friday 05 September 08 18:32 BST (UK)  »
My sister in law has two maps in a silk like material about 24 inches square.  One is a general map of Germany and the other is divided up into 5 more detailed maps of Germany.  The scale is 31.5 English miles to an inch.

She was told these were maps carried by her father who was attached to the 6th Airborne Division.  Can anyone tell me if this was the style of map carried? She just wants to verify the information.

Armed Forces / 6th Airborne
« on: Wednesday 30 July 08 20:59 BST (UK)  »
Just making an enquiry on behalf of my sister in law whose dad was in the 6th Airborne Royal Engineers.  She has the two silk maps he was given for the attack on Pegasus Bridge and is now trying to find out his war service record.  Any help appreciated in how she should go about this.

The Common Room / found missing child
« on: Saturday 17 May 08 10:39 BST (UK)  »
A while ago I made a post looking for missing Claridge children.  I had an obituary of my grandmothers stating she was survived by her eleven children.  I had named most of them but and found another thanks to help from here but we were still missing one with no idea of name or sex.

My cousin has just found the missing one by checking baptism archives for churches in the area.  The odd thing is that I have no recollection of my dad ever mentioning his name although I recalled the names of all the others, my cousin says his dad never mentioned him either.  Another family member made some reference to realtives in Australia so now I am trying to check that out in case he emigrated.

Its funny how when you solve one puzzle another rears its head, I guess that is what keeps us all at it.
