Lancashire Lookup Requests / Accrington St. Ann's baptism please
« on: Tuesday 07 October 08 12:23 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

If anybody has access to baptism records for St. Anns (RC) in Accrington, please can they look up the baptism on 3/11/1898 of Roland Kenyon?

I viewed this years ago at the county records office and there was a note written in the margin about Roland's subsequent marriage. It looked like he married Elizabeth Joanna Burowden (?) on 18/2/1930 at St. something in Sheffield - where the something could have been Weld/Vincent or, with hindsight, possibly Wilfred.

A helpful person in the West Yorkshire forum has spotted that there is an entry on FreeBMD in Q4 1918 in Sheffield for the marriage of Roland Kenyon and Elizabeth Smith or Snowden. This seems very promising, so if anyone can see the scribble in the margin, please can they tell me whether this is right??

Thanks very much
Alison

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Marriage look up Sheffield 1930 please
« on: Monday 06 October 08 13:28 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm trying to track down the marriage of Roland (or Rowland) Kenyon to Elizabeth Joanna Burowden(?) in 1930 on 18th February. The only details I have are from a small scribble in the margin of Roland's baptism, so it's really difficult to read, I'm afraid.

It looks like either St. Weld or Vincent or maybe Wilfred. The last one may be the best place to start as I have at least confirmed that it exists and is the correct denomination (RC).

Elizabeth's surname is also difficult to read, so "Burowden" is the best guess at the moment!

Thanks very much,
Alison

Durham / Red Robin Rogerson
« on: Wednesday 16 January 08 19:43 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

Does anybody have any information about Robin Rogerson (Red Robin) apart from what can be found on the Gateshead History and Tomorrow's History websites?

He was apparently the landlord of the Coach & Horses in Wrekenton and a colourful character by all accounts (especially with the red wig!) but I can't find out when this was ... or when he allegedly met his death by being beaten with his own wooden leg!!

I'm particularly interested because Rogerson is a family name and includes at least one Inn Keeper plus my late father-in-law reckoned he was an ancestor.

Any information would be great.
Thanks,
Alison

Durham Lookup Requests / Spennymoor Births/Baptisms - Carroll
« on: Wednesday 16 January 08 17:19 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I have been at a "brick wall" with this one for a very long time.... I'm hoping someone can help me, please!

We have a James Carroll born about 1864 (based on census ages and his marriage and death certificates). According to the 1891 and 1901 Censuses, he was born in Spennymoor.

His marriage certificate gives his father as also James Carroll (deceased) Clock Weaver.

Here's the problem: I can't track down his birth or baptism (even allowing for different spellings) - I have had a couple of returned cheques from register offices.

What makes this worse is I can't find him in the 1871 or 1881 censuses at all! (Or at least not with a father James.) Consequently I have no idea about his mother.

The only possible entry for a James Carroll (senior) that I have found in the 1861 census shows him as Single and a lodger (from Ireland).

Any help gratefully received!

Thanks,
Alison
