Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Two Free Online Genealogy Courses - futurelearn.com
« on: Saturday 27 January 24 02:53 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I am currently working through 2 free genealogy courses provided by futurelearn.com and the University of Strathclyde.

The 2 courses are in one week blocks and go for 6 weeks.  There are short videos to watch and articles to read.  There are also several quizzes that are completed in various sections. The 2 courses are Genetic Genealogy: Researching your family tree using DNA  and  Genealogy: Research your family tree.

There is basic information which would help someone who is just starting out in their family history.  I have been undertaking family history, constructing family trees and also looking into DNA, for a number of years and have found the course to be rewarding.  Thus far I have completed Week 1 and Week 2 has just been made available (27 January)

I am trying to find out information about a Mary Ann Southee born in Birchington, Kent in 1835. Her parents are John Southee and Sophia Sharpe.

John Southee married Ann Brooks in 1821 and they had 3 children:  Mary, John Morgan and James.  James and Mary were baptized in the Ebenezer Chapel (Independent), Birchington, Kent.  The dates are a bit difficult to read as the copy is very light.  Ann died in 1827.

John Southee then married Sophia Sharpe.  They had a number of children born and baptized in the Ebenezer Chapel.  Children baptized in the Chapel were William (1830), Alfred (1832), George (1833), Mary Ann (1835) and Henry Thomas (1837).

John and Sophia emigrated from England to New Zealand on the "Lady Nugent" with 6 children.  The ship left Gravesend in 1840 and arrived in Wellington in 1841.  Sophia did give birth to a daughter, Elizabeth, on the ship.  Two of the children from John's previous marriage, John Morgan and James, remained in England and can be found in the 1841 Census living with Grandparents Michael and Mary Brooks in Elmstone.  From articles in New Zealand Past Papers I believe that Mary born 1824/25, went with her father and step-mother.

There are a number of articles on Past Papers from interviews with Mary Ann Short, formerly Mary Ann Southee.  She states that she came to New Zealand in 1841 and she was aged about 16 or 17.  In another article she gives her birth day as 17 December 1824 and that she came with 2 brothers and 3 sisters.  This could be 2 sisters and 3 brothers. In interviews Mary Ann also mentions her brother Henry Thomas Wilkinson Southee who is several years younger that her.  Mary Ann Short/Southee died in 1925 aged 100 years and 6 months.  One child of Joseph and Sophia died in 1841 which possibly could have been on the ship when travelling to NZ.

The child I am trying to find out about is Mary Ann who was baptized in 1835 in the Ebenezer Chapel, parents John and Sophia Southee.  There are a number of trees on Ancestry that have the Mary born in 1825 as dying in 1825 and the Mary Ann baptized in 1835 as being Mary Ann Short, the one who died in 1925 aged 100 years.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Father of Judith and DNA Matches
« on: Sunday 20 November 22 07:22 GMT (UK)  »
Can someone with greater expertise in DNA give me some advice on matches based on the 2 charts I have prepared.

I have been working with another person to try and establish the possible father of Judith.  Her mother is Shirley.  Judith has matches with Will and Gary, Ollie, Brett and Ena.  Larry is her son.

Looking at Chart One and assuming Judith's father is SWH, would Will or Gary have a DNA match with Ollie, Brett or Ena?

Looking at Chart Two and assuming Judith's father is JH, would Will or Gary have a DNA match with Ollie, Brett or Ena?

Lancashire / Looking for Sarah Ann Shelton
« on: Sunday 24 July 22 13:11 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find a birth record and Census material for Sarah Ann Shelton.  She married a Frank Etherington on 25 December 1888 at St John's Church, Walworth, Surrey.  Sarah gives her age as 26 and her father is John Skelton (deceased).

I have been able to find Sarah Ann in the 1891, 1901, 1911 and 1921 Census.  In all of these she gives her birth place as Bolton, Lancashire.  Her birth years range from 1863 to 1865 on these.  On the 1921 Census, Sarah gives her age as 59 years and 6 months.

I do have a birth record for a Sarah Ann Shelton, 15 January 1864, Regent Road Salford, Lancaster.  Parents are Sarah Jane Shelton (formerly Smith) and Alfred Shelton (machine fitter, journeyman).  I am not sure if this is the correct one as father is Alfred and not John.

I have not been able to find Sarah Ann on any Census material prior to 1891, ie in her maiden name.  I would like some help in trying to find Sarah Ann's birth registration, assuming the one I have is not correct, and also in the 1871 and 1881 Census.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Thoughts on a 5th Generation DNA Match
« on: Sunday 16 January 22 10:13 GMT (UK)  »
For a number of years I have been trying to find out the parents of my maternal grandmother.  My grandmother went by the name of Ada Olive Grey Smith.  In Census data and on her marriage certificate she could be born anywhere between the years of 1879 to 1883.  The earliest I am able to find Ada is in 1901 in Gillingham, Kent.  The one consistent thing is that she gives her birthplace as Linton, Kent.  A number of people on this forum have attempted to find Ada but have not been successful.

I have been able to separate my paternal and maternal matches after my mother's niece did a DNA test for me and I have also put together a "dummy" tree to see how some of my maternal top matches are connected (149Cm to 43Cm).  This has been quite successful.

A couple of days ago I started looking at an Ada Mary Waghorn, born 1880 in Edmonton, Middlesex.  She appears in the Maidstone Workhouse in the 1881 and 1891 Census.  Her mother died in 1881 in Maidstone.  I have also looked at her parents and grand parents to get an idea of her ancestry. On my main tree I changed my grandmother's name from Ada Olive Grey Smith to Ada Mary Waghorn.  Looking at my matches, using Ada Mary Waghorn as my grandmother, I have come up with 2 sixth cousin matches (8 and 9 Cms).  Our common ancestor is our 5th Great Grandfather.

Are the matches that I have come up with by changing the name of my grandmother from Ada Olive Grey Smith to Ada Mary Waghorn reliable?

Hi,
Could the photograph of Albert and Florance be improved.  This is possibly their wedding photograph taken in 1918.  Thank you.

Lancashire / Sarah Skelton/Shelton/Sheldon 1863 Bolton
« on: Thursday 30 December 21 12:55 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find a birth registration for a Sarah Skelton/Shelton/Sheldon who married a Frank Etherington on December 25 1888 at St John the Evangelist Church, Walworth.  On Sarah's marriage certificate she gives her age as 26 and her father John Skelton (deceased).  Sarah Etherington consistently gives her birthplace as Bolton, Lancashire although her birth year does range from 1863 to 1865.  I am trying to find a birth record for Sarah but am struggling to find one.

I do have a certificate for a Sarah Ann Shelton registered in Salford, January 1864 but this is not the correct one.  The father listed on this is Alfred and the mother Sarah Jane, formerly Smith.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

I had a DNA test with Ancestry several years ago.  My highest match is with my first cousin who I asked to do a test so I could work out connections with my mother.  The cousin is the daughter of my mother's sister.

I do not know who my maternal great grandparents are.  My grandmother was not open about her parents and the earliest she can be found is in 1901 aged 20 working as a domestic servant.  I have not been able to find anything prior to 1901, (birth/baptism records, census material) and information on official documents after 1901 has not lead to anything about her background. The name of the father given on her marriage certificate can not be found.  I have spent many years trying to work things out through traditional paper records and then decided to turn to DNA.

The highest match I share with my cousin is 149cM over 10 segments.  I have sent emails to this match and they do not reply.  His tree has 13 people on this and these are all but one marked as private.  I have managed to work out who this person is and have started constructing a tree with his ancestors.   The match is about 10 years younger than me, his father born in 1918 and his mother around this time. My mother was born in 1919.  My grandmother was born somewhere between 1880-1882.  His grandfather in 1867 and grandmother in 1874.  Going back further, his maternal and paternal great grandparents were born in 1836.

When putting the 149cMs and the paper record together, at what level should I be looking for our connection.  I have used the DNA painter tool and have some idea where I should look but would like some advice from others who have some expertise in working with DNA.

My mother died about 6 years ago and she does not have any surviving brothers and sisters.

London and Middlesex / William Thomas Hammond born 28 November 1873
« on: Saturday 17 October 20 03:31 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I have completed quite a bit of research on a William Thomas Hammond, his birth registered in the sub district of Hanover Square, Middlesex on the 28 November 1873.  His parents are a Thomas Hammond and Mary Ann Hammond, formerly Cotterill.  (I have the certificate for this and there is also a baptism record on Ancestry for this.)  Thomas Hammond was baptized in 1820 in Petworth, Sussex and Mary Ann in 1841 in Berkshire England.

I have Thomas in the 1861 Census as living in the parish of St Martin in the Fields, Middlesex, working as a Stablehand.  Thomas married Mary Ann Cotterill on Oct 29 1865 in Teesdale, Durham, Yorkshire.  Mary Ann and Thomas remained in Durham for several years and by the time the 1871 Census was taken they had moved to Norwood, Middlesex and then later to Chelsea, London where Thomas worked as a Groom and Coachman.

The children I have for Mary Ann and Thomas are:

Martha Bell (baptized May 6, 1860)  born prior to marriage of Thomas and Mary Ann therefore Thomas may not be the father.  Martha lived with her grandparents Joseph and Maria for over 10 years but then by 1881 was living in London.  In 1881 she is living with Elizabeth Maria.  Martha married a Henry Harry Harrold and then later a George Strevens.  Martha was in the London County Lunatic Asylum for a number of years.

Joseph Henry born October 10 1862 in Streatley, Berkshire.  Joseph did at the age of 12 years.  Again, not sure if Joseph is a son of Thomas.

Elizabeth Maria, bory September 17 1866 in Staindrop, Durham.  Married a Charles Reuben Charman in Chelsea in 1888.

Frances (Fanny) Ann Mary birth registered in 1868 in Teesdale, Durham.  Married Francis Herbert Brown in Chelsea in 1890.

Charlotte Sarah, baptized 1871 and married George Henry James Molyneaux in 1896 in Hampshire.

William Thomas, born November 28 1873 and married a Hannah Thick on December 24, 1893 in Chelsea.

Harriet Emma, born July 17 1875 and married a Walter Gladstone on December 26, 1904 in Chelsea.

Harry Samuel, born January 10, 1878 and married Ellen (Nellie) Greenwood on February 10, 1897 in Chelsea.

Rosa Louisa, born July 17, 1883 and married Arthur Charles Staddon on March 15, 1903 in Chelsea.

The person that I am interested in is William Thomas Hammond.  I have William Thomas marrying Hannah Thick but I am not sure if this is the correct marriage.   There are a number of things on the marriage certificate that ring bells that this is the correct marriage, but a couple of things are not correct.  Additionally the William Thomas I have followed through with Census data has varied places of birth.  I have newspaper articles stating that Hannah and William had separated and Electoral Registers have William living at 29a Tetcott Road, Chelsea from 1919 until his death in 1928.  I have a death certificate for a William Thomas and also a newspaper report that was in the paper for an inquest into the death.

I do have a Hammond tree on Ancestry.  There are a number of trees on Ancestry with William Thomas married to a Hannah Thick in them but all differ from mine.  I am starting to doubt if my research is not correct and I have things not right on my tree.

Regards Kay
