Sussex Lookup Requests / Poor law lookup - ROE Linch, Sussex please
« on: Tuesday 20 July 10 20:01 BST (UK)  »
If anybody could help with this, I would be so grateful; this is my brick wall!!!!

I am trying to find out anything I can about SARAH ROE - all I know so far is that she had a son Jonathan born 30 Aug 1789 in Linch, Sussex. Jonathan appears to be illegitimate and Sarah is listed as a 'pauper'...are the poor law records for Linch where you would look next?

Any help most gratefully received... :)

Canada Lookup Request / Canadian Women's Hostel, Drummond St, Montreal
« on: Saturday 17 July 10 19:12 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm trying to find what happened to my Nan's sister who emigrated in the 30's with the address of destination being 'Canadian Women's Hostel, 1155 Drummond St, Montreal'. She was a domestic. Does anyone know what this place was? Or where I could find any records to find out where she went from there?
I'm failing so far to find any trace of her after that...we think she may have married a man named Fritz, but we don't know if that was his first name or surname even?
Her name was Constance Evelyn Cowan Begg b abt 1909

Any help most gratefully received!

Sussex Lookup Requests / ROE - Linchmere baptism look up please
« on: Sunday 18 January 09 15:22 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I think I may have fallen foul of boundary issues and might have been looking in the wrong place...I've been looking at Linchmere Surrey, but I now think it might be Linchmere SUSSEX?!

Please can anybody look up JONATHAN ROE for me -b 1789 in Linchmere. I'm wondering if he might have had any siblings too? and if possible who his parents were - although there is a record on the IGI which Tricia kindly spotted and it looks as though his mother may have been SARAH ROE but he was probably illegitimate.

I am also looking for the baptism of his son WILLIAM ROE but that I believe was in Bramshott which I think is in Hampshire?!? I have William's sons birth cert which confirms that William Roe was the father and his mother was a Sarah Roe (nee Cobb).

Any help most gratefully received! I'm really stuck with moving any further ???

Lanarkshire / Begg family, Glasgow
« on: Sunday 06 July 08 19:43 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I posted this on another thread, but it was suggested to try here too - I'm trying to find out about my grandmother's cousins
Barbara Begg b Jul 1921 and Jane Cowan Begg b Jan 1926. I appreciate they may still be living, but my Nan died 16 years ago so I wondered if sadly they had too?

They lived in Glasgow (Dorset Street and Newton Terrace) as far as I know. Their parents were James Begg and Margaret Montgomery. ANother kind rootchatter has found the marriage of James and Margaret, but that is the only info I have.

I can't seem to find a marriage for either Barabara or Jane? If anyone could do a birth / marriage or death lookup for me that would be great.

Would also love to hear from anybody who is related or has any info that might help  :)

Sussex / Heathfield Chapel, Sussex -memorial?
« on: Tuesday 01 July 08 12:43 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Does anyone know the Heathfield Chapel in Sussex? Is it still there? My third great grandfather was the Reverend there and there is apparently a memorial to him outside. His name was Rev James Pert

If anyone had a picture of the chapel, or was able to take one of the memorial I would be so grateful  :D

Lancashire / deciphering a certificate - Liverpool Clayton Square
« on: Monday 30 June 08 19:47 BST (UK)  »
I'm going to try posting an image of the certificate discussed in this thread
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,312697.0.html and a bit in this thread
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,311477.0.html

I think it says 'union (something), back of Clayton Square, Liverpool'.

Can anybody work out / does anybody know what the 'something' is?! Do you think I'm right with the other bits too.

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Clayton Square, Liverpool c1840's
« on: Monday 30 June 08 12:20 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I've just received a birth certificate and the address seems to read
'union Fap / Jalp, back of Clayton Square, Liverpool'

Can anyone tell me what it might be or anything about the area then? It definitely says union, but the other word is really hard to decipher. I'm pretty sure it reads 'back of Clayton Square' though.

If anyone knew anything more I'd be really grateful.
The family were named RUNCORN. It says the father George was a domestic servant. The mother was called Ellen (formerly Ellen Grant). They had 2 children I know about called Catherine and George both b 1847 - 1849. It is Catherines birth cert from 1847 which gives the details I've listed.

Many thanks :)

*sorry!! I've just realised I posted this under look ups, but I meant to post it under general; I don't think I can move it can I?

Armed Forces / Sgt Major William Roe - help!!
« on: Tuesday 24 June 08 17:51 BST (UK)  »
I hope you can help me  ???

We were left some family history info.
One part was a family tree; I've done quite a bit on this and now think the tree I have is correct. Nearly at the root of this tree is a WILLIAM ROE b 1815 in Bramshot Hampshire.

BUT... in the grandparents book there is lots of info about a SGT MAJOR WILLIAM ROE 1791 - 1868. This William Roe had a long military history and there is a copy of a book detailing 50 years service with the 22 Regiment of Foot. He enlisted 6 Sep 1833 and seems to have worked his way up to being Sgt Maj from 4 Sep 1849 - 26 Sep 1854.

My question is about how the Sgt Major William is related to us, if at all - I get the feeling the family are confusing him with the other William Roe from the book even though there is an obvious discrepancy in the dates, but at the same time I have not been able to prove or disprove any link. However, I can find nothing on the Sgt Major as i have no other info.

Can anybody help please?
I'd be most grateful :)
