Northamptonshire Lookup Requests / Newspaper Archive
« on: Saturday 16 January 21 15:02 GMT (UK)  »
I am researching my husband's tree and have found his maternal grandfather - George Ratcliffe - who died as a result of a pedal cycle accident in June 1946 in Cransley, Northamptonshire. Can anyone advise if there are likely to be any newspaper reports about this and, if so, how I go about finding them. Thank you

World War Two / How do I find ww2 service number
« on: Tuesday 20 March 18 21:17 GMT (UK)  »
My husband's father, William Thomas Charles Moore, served in ww2 but died in 1965. Hubby's Mum would never talk about his dad as she remarried and he has no info about his dad. Mum passed away last year so no chance of getting her to talk.
Is there any way we can find out what his service number was to see if there are any service records available for him. His details are:
William Thomas Charles Moore, born 1918 in Leighton Buzzard, died 1965 in Buckinghamshire. I can find birth marriage and death records but am at a loss with this one (and my FH research skills are a bit rusty after a number of years away)
Any help or suggestions greatly appreciated

My partners father served in WW2, we think in Royal Engineers. He was born in 1918 and died in 1965. We think he served in Tobruck and Palestine but have nothing concrete to go on. Does anyone have any ideas how we can find his service number and, if possible, any records relating to him.
Cheers

Technical Help / Device Manager help required - COMPLETED
« on: Saturday 04 July 09 16:18 BST (UK)  »
I have an XP machine with some entries in Device Manager that I need to remove but am unable to.

The entries relate to my previous mobile phone so I know they are unnecessary. However, when I try to remove them I get the following message

"Failed to uninstall the device. The device may be required to boot up the computer."

the items are:
Sony Ericsson Device 116 USB Ethernet Emulation (NDIS 5) - AVG miniport driver
Sony Ericsson Device 116 USB Ethernet Emulation (NDIS 5) - Packet Scheduler Miniport
Sony Ericsson Device 816 USB Ethernet Emulation (NDIS 5) - AVG miniport driver
Sony Ericsson Device 816 USB Ethernet Emulation (NDIS 5) - Packet Scheduler Miniport

I have been able to disable the drivers but can't uninstall.

Any suggestions????

Technical Help / Samsung PC Studio 3
« on: Tuesday 26 May 09 11:13 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I have just upgraded my mobile phone to a Samsung U900 (which I love) and installed the Samsung PC suite to link my phone with my PC.

It all works OK apart from the Multimedia Manager element. Whenever I try to load it I get the following error message

The instruction at "0x013290d4" referenced memory at "0x00000004". The memory could not be "read"

Can anyone explain
a) what this error means and
b) how I can correct it

thanks

Family History Programs, Tree Organisation, Presentation / 123-reg
« on: Tuesday 26 May 09 11:09 BST (UK)  »
Hi Guys

I've not been on the boards very much recently, lost a bit of my enthusiasm as so many brick walls, dont know which one to tackle first  :)

Anyway, i'm looking to change my ISP but the one i'm considering doesn't offer free webspace but I saw the above web hosting site in my recent YFT mag - the address is www.123-reg.co.uk - and it looks very reasonable.

I was just wondering if anyone had any knowledge of them and what you think about the site, etc.

Pricewise it also seems reasonable at £1.85 or £2.99 per month. I don't want to pay a fortune but should be saving about £12 per month by changing my ISP.

Thought that if I start with my site, I will (hopefully) get my passion back and get back into my research.

Thanks for any opinions

Canada / Canadian Search Advice needed
« on: Tuesday 03 March 09 16:12 GMT (UK)  »
My GG Grandmother was born in Canada c1840/45 and I have very limited information.

She was Mary Jane Gates and, according to the 1911 Census was born in Horton, North America Resident.

She married Thomas Hill in Halifax, Nova Scotia on 13/01/1868, and came to the UK with him sometime after that.

Her parents were William and Sarah according to the marriage register (which I have a copy of).

How would I go about tracing any further information about Mary or her family?

All advice most welcome

I currently have FTM2005 installed on my PC and it it quite easy to use. However, I have also been given a copy of Family Historian 3.

I know this question is a case of preference but has anybody used both programmes and what are your verdicts on them (plus or minus).
