Renfrewshire / McAuslan, John, Paisley, Scotland born about 1770
« on: Monday 14 January 19 03:48 GMT (UK)  »
I am a MacAusland descendant living in Prince Edward Island, Canada.  You may have heard of MacAusland's Woolen Mills, they ship blankets etc. worldwide.  Anyway, one of my cousins had his DNA done and it showed a Scottish ancestor with roots in Scotland and in Pennsylvania, USA.  My ancestor was Samuel McAuslin, later changed to MacAusland, who came to Prince Edward Island in the early 1820's.  Apparently he had brothers, William, John and Archibald and they came to the US from Paisley, Scotland, which I believe is near Glasgow.  Just wondering if there are any MacAusland researchers from that area.  Thank you for your cooperation.

Aberdeenshire / David Adam & Elspet Conon family-Tough, Abderdeenshire
« on: Thursday 15 October 15 04:52 BST (UK)  »
Looking for the parents of Elspet Conon and David Adam's mother, his father is John Adam and John's father may have been William Adam.  If anybody has any knowledge of this Adam family, I would greatly appreciate hearing from you.

We were on a bus tour to Scotland and Ireland in late August and early September 2015 and the scenery was incredible.  We saw lots of sheep, mountains, lakes and castles.  They had to be a hearty lot to be able to exist in the Scottish Highlands.

Thank you.

Thanks to a Barry researcher from Tallow for providing me with the marriage record for the above couple:
Date of Marriage:  July 12, 1818
Parish/District       Tallow, County of Waterford
Groom:                 Thomas Barry
Bride:                   Brigid Cosgrove or Cosgrave
Both Roman Catholic
Witness 1              Joanna Cosgrove or Cosgrave
Witness 2              Mary Healy
Officiator:              Foran, N.
Place:                    Tallow

There was no information regarding their parents.  We know that Richard Barry and wife unknown were the parents of Thomas Barry.  We don't know who Brigid's parents were or if the surname was actually Cosgrove or Cosgrave.  I live in Prince Edward Island, Canada and at the funeral for my great grandmother, Mrs. Mary Barry, there were Cosgroves listed as her pallbearers so I am guessing there must be a relationship and that most likely Brigid and Joanna listed above were also related and were both Cosgrove.

If anybody could help with either the Barry or Cosgrove/Cosgrave families living in Tallow during the early 1800's, it would be much appreciated.  There must be a death record or grave inscription somewhere that other family researchers have found.

We are going on a tour to Ireland & Scotland in August-September so I am hoping that I can find some Barry or Cosgrove researchers from Tallow that I may be able to contact.

Thanking you in advance for any help.  It would be very much appreciated.

Lanarkshire / George & David Penman
« on: Wednesday 18 February 15 22:59 GMT (UK)  »
George Penman died in 1804 in Lot 13, Prince Edward Island Canada and David Penman died in 1824 in Tryon, PEI.  They were both living in Prince Edward Island (PEI) in the 1798 Census.  There is a record on Ancestry of a George and David Penman arriving at Boston in 1762.   We don't know the relationship between these two men but both named some of their daughters, Jane and Elizabeth.  Christy and Nancy as well as Margaret are names passed down in George's line.  George Penman appears to be married twice, 1st wife unknown and second wife's first name was Mary, the widow Cole, who had a son, Benjamin Cole born in 1762.  George Penman is the ancestor of famous author, Lucy Maud Montgomery, who wrote "Anne of Green Gables" published in 1908.

According to various sources, George Penman was a paymaster in the British army under Lord Rollo in 1775.  In his Estate papers in 1804, there were British redcoat military uniforms.  To date nobody has been able to find any military service for a George Penman.  According to the Montgomery family lore, George Penman came to PEI from New England, having lost all his possessions in the war.  We also have not been able to find a marriage record for George Penman anywhere in New England.  If any of this information is of interest, I would welcome a response.

Thank you.

Cork / Mary Collins & Michael Saunders Marriage Record
« on: Sunday 08 February 15 19:11 GMT (UK)  »
 Michael Saunders was born 1797 in County Cork, Ireland, and died 15 Mar 1884 in Indian River, PEI. He married Mary Collins 1831 in Ireland. She was born 1806 in County Cork, Ireland, and died Abt. 1901 in Indian River, Prince Edward Island, Canada.

This Mary Collins was most likely a sister to my ancestor, Peter Collins, who also emigrated to PEI around the same time.  They settled in an area first called Fermoy in PEI.  She named her oldest daughter, Ellen Mary and the name Ellen is frequently listed in the Saunders descendants.  Apparently they were married in Mitchelstown (sp)  Peter Collins named one of his sons, Patrick, if that is of any significance.

If anybody is researching the Collins family from Cork,  I would appreciate hearing from you.
Thank you.

I am trying to find out if he may be the father of Ellen/Helen Mansfield born between 1821-23 in Ballyglavin, parish of Ardagh, Cork, Ireland.  If anybody has any information on the Mansfield families of the parish of Ardagh, I would appreciate hearing from you.  Thank you.

Argyllshire / George Penman, 2nd great grandfather of Lucy Maud Montgomery
« on: Friday 28 March 14 23:41 GMT (UK)  »
George Penman died in 1804 at Port Hill in Prince Edward Island, Canada.  Two of his daughters, namely Ann/Nancy and Elizabeth were the great-grandmothers of Lucy Maud Montgomery, famous authoress of "Anne of Green Gables."  Nancy Penman married Donald Montgomery and Elizabeth/Betsy Penman married David Murray of Bedeque, PEI.  Donald Montgomery, (Nancy's son) married Ann Murray, (Betsy's daughter) and their son, Hugh John Montgomery was Lucy Maud's father.

Below is a record showing a David & George Penman: Passenger and Immigration Lists Index, 1500s-1900s

David Penman also lived in Prince Edward Island, Canada  in Tryon, Lot 28 and he died in February, 1824.
David PENMAN died in 1824 in Tryon River, PEI.

DEATH;  Published in PEI newspaper (PEDR) 21 Feb 1824, page 3, column 2:  "Died lately at Tryon River, Mr.
David Penman, an old and respectable inhabitant of that place"

Another mention of David Penman is found in the following publication:

VOLUME I,  WM. SCHURMAN LOYALIST AND HIS DESCENDANTS:  PEI Archives, Charlottetown.
"Wm Schurman, born in New Rochelle (a Huguenot town) in New York, ca. 1743.  His people had been living in New York for over one-hundred years.  His ancestor, Harman Schurman.
Page 26, August, 1785
'Here we see him working by the day for a neighbour, (DAVID PENMAN), mowing on the marsh, building a bridge, harvesting oats, and doing other unspecified jobs at the rate of 3 shillings (Halifax currency) a day - about 60 cents - assisted by 16-year old Peter, whose salary works out to about 25 cents a day!'
               ~~~~~~~~-------------------
The Census of April 1798 for Governor Fanning by Rob't Fox, D. Surveyor, shows in
LOT 28:  David Penman:   1 Male 16-60 yrs              2  Females under 16 yrs
                                          1 Male over 60 yrs           1 Female over 60 yrs    - TOTAL:  5 PERSONS
We don't know the relationship between David and George Penman but they both named two of their daughters, Elizabeth and Jane.  Two other daughters of George were named Ann/Nancy and Margaret.  David's other daughter was called Martha.  There were no sons for either George and David Penman but George did have a stepson, Benjamin Cole born about 1762 and his mother's name was Mary, the widow Cole.
If anybody recognizes any of these names in their Penman family history, we would appreciate hearing from you.  According to Lucy Maud's family stories, her ancestor, George was supposed to be the paymaster for Lord Rollo's army who came to PEI in 1758.
According to page 366 of Clint Morrison's History of Lot 11:
John Ramsay or nicknamed "Justice John" married Margaret Penman, resided at Port Hill, Lot 13.  (Margaret was a daughter of George Penman who had been the Paymaster of the Garrison under Lord Rollo in 1758}
Thank you.
Cork / Thomas Barry & Bridgid Cosgrove
« on: Wednesday 19 March 14 01:10 GMT (UK)  »
Thomas Barry & Bridgid Cosgrove lived in Tallow, Ireland, which I think is near Waterford.  He had a son, John Thomas Barry born in 1820 in Ireland, who emigrated to Prince Edward Island, Canada.  His other children were Francis, Richard and Elizabeth.  His brother, John Richard had a son called Benjamin, so maybe that is the Benjamin he is referring to in the following letter to his brother, John.  Apparently the marriage record of John Thomas Barry lists his father as Thomas Barry and his mother as Bridgid Cosgrove.  If any of these names are familiar, I would appreciate your getting in contact with me.  Thank you.
Below is a letter from John Thomas Barry to his brother, Richard Barry, both sons of Richard Barry and wife unknown:
Source:  "Along the North Shore"  Pages 226 & 227
A Letter From Ireland:
On February 26, 1851, Thomas Barry of County Waterford, Ireland wrote the following letter to his brother, John who lived at Egmont Bay, Lot 15. John Barry had left County Tipperary via Waterford in 1812 to Newfoundland and in 1815 moved to  Malpeque before settling at Lot 11. He moved from Lot 11 to Egmont Bay and several descendants still live in Wellington area today.  The original document in the possession of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Bulger, Foxely River.  Joseph's grandmother was Catherine Barry (1825-1889), very likely a daughter of John. The letter is a realistic portrayal of the problems and concerns of Irish tenants during the mid-nineteenth century. One can almost feel the sorrow in the writer's heart as he corresponds with a brother he has not seen for nearly thirty years.
                                                                                 Tallow, 26th Feb. 1851
My Dear Brother:
I write you these few lines hoping to find you and your family in good health as this leaves me at present.  Thanks be to God for his mercy.  The reason I write this letter now is for fear that you did not receive my letter I wrote you in the month of last November.  Which in that letter I stated all particulars respecting myself and family and also the reason of my son not going out (to PEI) in the fall. I also stated to you in that letter respecting the answers I received from Mr. Wm. Yeo which if you received that letter I am sure that it would give you every information.  But for fear that it should miscarry, I write you this second letter now.  The reason I delayed my first was to let you know about the answer I received from Mr. Wm. Yeo. When I first wrote him a letter he said in reply to me that he could not give me a decided answer as the barque did not arrive up to that time.  But he requested of me to write him a second letter which I did and his answer was then that the season was rather late and that the vessel would not go until in or about the first of April precisely and that I could go.  I also stated to him to know whether he would find my son in provisions for the passage or whether you said anything about it and he said nothing to me in either letter I received from him.
Dear brother, I hope that as soon as this letter reaches you that you will write me an answer as the time is drawing near and also that you will send me a few Pounds in money to fit him (his son) out for the passage as I am not able to do so for myself.  You may easily judge of the state of things in this Kingdom now since your absence from it. The flannel in your time we were paid 1/1 1/2 (pence) per yard for working it.  We must do it now for 1/2 pence per yard and not employed three parts of the year round at that same price.
I hope that you will do all that lies in your power to take my son John out, as he being the eldest in the family now.  The second boy his name is Francis  and the youngest his name is Richard, called after my father.  I had but one daughter.  Her name was Elizabeth.  She was married and her husband was killed by a fall from his scaffold and she died immediately after hearing tell of his death.  I have a little boy aged seven years, a fine hearty young fellow.  My son Francis enlisted in the line and is now soldiering in the East Indies.  I also wrote to Benjamin as you desired and received no answer from him. I also feel sorry for the loss of your wife and son and I hope that I will see you before I depart this life.
                                                                                  Yours,                                                                                                                         Thomas Barry,
                                                                                   until death.
