Hi

The below marriage is possibly the William Hoaten/Hooten that I am looking for.
Mar Qtr 1907, Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire
William HOOTON and Elizabeth EVANS
Married: Shelton St Mark Stoke on Trent.

Any suggestions on who his parents were and where they were before and after the marriage

If this is the person I am looking for, they would have sailed from Southampton to South Africa on The German. His occupation in 1907 was a Warrant Officer in the BSAP/- R.S.M. (S.R.V?.)- English British Subject.

Thanks

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / William Charles Hoaten

Hi

I am really stumped with this man, have been hitting a brick wall with him for 4 years.

If anyone out there can help me I would be very grateful.  This is what I know:
William, born in Staines in 1876 or 1879, came to South Africa in 1899. Soon after he was attested in to the BSAP and did service in the Anglo-Boer war and in WW1 (a Lieutenant in German East Africa, now Namibia).

His 1st wife was came to SA in 1907. After she died he married Mabel Mary Crombie nee Cookson.
Major Hoaten was a major in the BSAP (British Police in Rhodesia).  By the time he retired, he was said to have been one of the highest ranking officers in the fledging defence forces.

There is a cutting from a Rhodesian newspaper about 1938 that describes the wedding of Mabel daughter with her 1st husband,  Mary Elizabeth Crombie to Stuart Clarkson.  In it, she is "given away by her step-father Major Hoaten."  also "There was no formal reception owing to the health of the brides mother, but some intimate friends motored out to Hillside to the resdent of Captain and Mrs Hough where the cake was cut.. ."

I am more interested in his information before he came to South Africa - his parents, siblings etc.
I have searched for any information on this William Charles Hoaten, but so far nothing has been found. It is almost as if this was a newly created person who did not exist before he came to SA - did he create a new identity or am I not looking in the 'right' places?

Please, if anyone can help me, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks

Michelle

Hi All

I am helping an 86 year old friend research the following Barkan family.

This branch were known by the surname Barkan, but their cousins were Copelands. They all lived in the Manchester/Salford area.
Jacob Nathan Barkan (Yankel Nossen) born about 1890 - possibly Riga.

Brothers: David, Benjamin and Jud. Benjamin was the youngest of the boys
Sisters: Ethel, Tilly and Rose
Ethel married Abie Luft
Tilly married her cousin Lionel Copeland
Rose married Abie Galpern from Scotland

Jacob, the eldest, came to Manchester as a very young child.  The
others were born in Manchester/Salford area.

The 3 youngest children were born in Dublin.

Thanks

The Common Room / Cookson/Montaigne marriage
« on: Monday 19 April 10 14:43 BST (UK)  »
Hi All

I am looking for the marriage certificate of a Percy Charles Cookson  (born 1872) and Adelaide de la Montaigne, married at the British embassy around 1894. They possibly got married later by his father Rev Osmond Cookson in Elmstead as well.

There does not seem to be an online information from UK national archives.

It seems that the UK national archives has given all their infomration to commercial enterprises like Find my past and Ancestry. Both these sites demand payment without confirming they have the information I am looking for.  I am happy to pay for the correct information but do not want to pay and then find out they do not have the information I am looking for.

Any idea where I can find this information? ???

Thanks

Hi

In a census Alice L. WILLIAMS is listed as Octavious Bawtree's Niece, Age 31 Born: abt 1850 in Aberton, Essex, England.

I am looking to find this relationship - it does not fit in with any of his sisters -  one married a Robinson the other a Hunt.
