Lancashire / J. Halsall living at 49 Netherley Road, Wigan in 1947.
« on: Saturday 04 May 19 14:16 BST (UK)  »
Hello, I am looking for help in finding out information about a gentleman called J. Halsall. Unfortunately I do not have a first name. In March of 1947 his name appears on a death certificate as the informant. His address is given as 49 Netherley Road, Wigan (the Coppull area, I think). His relationship to the deceased is given as nephew. The deceased is William Henry Sherratt. William is the subject of another long post of mine, I know. I apologise for starting another one but I do not wish to clutter up the previous post. I wish to focus attention on Mr Halsall in the hope that his name (along with the connection with the address) may catch somebody's eye.

The Common Room / St. John Ambulance Association emblems on necklace chain.
« on: Wednesday 13 March 19 17:23 GMT (UK)  »
Whilst clearing out my late father's house recently, I came across something of interest. A necklace that once belonged to my grandmother features a locket (containing small portrait photos of my dad and uncle) and a set of attached St. John Ambulance Association items - a standard medallion, with a cross of St. John(?) and two small 'bars' (for lack of a better description), one bearing the date 1912 and the other 1940. On the reverse of the medallion is the inscription, 119356 Harry Smith. On the reverse of both bars is just the number. I have been researching my family for some years now and have never come across the name of Harry Smith. However, he must presumably have held some significance for my grandmother. She spent most of her life in the Leigh area of Lancashire and died in 1995 aged 91. I gather, after looking on the internet, that any research inquiries related to the St. John Ambulance Association have to be directed to the relevant local area branch. Does anybody know how I find out who to contact in the lancashire area? I am intrigued  and would like to find out a bit more about Harry Smith.

Other Countries / Translation from Danish
« on: Wednesday 06 March 19 10:40 GMT (UK)  »
I am putting together a portfolio of my aunt's ceramic artworks. I have an article from a Danish newspaper (from 1992) in which she features. I have managed to translate most of the article by using what I think are some fiendishly clever apps. However, the start of the article does not seem to be translating well. I am hoping that somebody can help with an accurate translation of the relevant part. The underlined bit is what I am struggling with, the rest I have included simply to provide some context.

"TUSINDKUNST FOR EN TI'ER: Hvadenten man ynder sin kunst lille eller stor, stillestaende eller i bevaegelse sa har Multi Kunst 92' i Silkeborg Showroom nok noget, der passer."

I would be grateful for any assistance.

Other Countries / Moran/Muller (or possibly Mueller) marriage in Africa
« on: Monday 04 March 19 11:26 GMT (UK)  »
Looking for details of a marriage that took place in Africa (possibly Kenya or Malawi) in late 1940s or early/mid 1950s (at a push it may have been even later). Frank Moran, a planter, born c. 1920 married Pamela Muller (Mueller), born c. 1924. Pamela was apparently born in Africa and her mother's surname was Campbell. Both parties are now deceased. I know some of the information is a very vague but what I have is as accurate as I have been able to ascertain thus far. I am particularly keen to establish Pamela's mother's first name. This research relates to a line of inquiry I am following about family in the West of Scotland.

The Common Room / Tracing somebody.
« on: Thursday 13 December 18 11:06 GMT (UK)  »
I think I know the answer to this already but I would just ike some clarification. Sadly My mother passed away recently. Every Christmas she received a card from an old and much loved friend (even though they had not actually seen each other for many years). The friend herself may have passed away too (she was born in 1924/1925). If however she is still alive I would like to inform her of my mum's death. I am aware of the conditions surrounding inquiries about living people so can think of no way to get in touch with the lady concerned if she is still alive. I have an address which my mother had for her but this might well be obsoslete by now. For instance, if she is still alive the lady may have moved to a nursing/care home somewhere else. My mum had been living in Scotland and her friend in England. I would appreciate any advice about how I make contact, if still possible.

Armed Forces / QARANC look up please.
« on: Thursday 29 March 18 11:50 BST (UK)  »
Can somebody do me a great favour? I am not on the Forces War Records website - and I am not entirely sure if the information I am after is contained on it. My mother was in the Queen Alexandra's Royal Army Nursing Corps between approximately 1955 - 1960. She served in Malaya during the 'emergency' and I  have her medal that she was awarded. I am trying to find records relating to her. My mother's name then was Ishobel McAlpine Stewart. She was born in November of 1932 in Argyll, Scotland and was a Lieutenant and then a Captain in the QARANC. I have a great many wonderful photos of her from her time in Malaya/Singapore. I would just like some more service details to complete my research. I am aware of the fact  that by calling the conflict an emergency it meant that it allowed the government of the day to declare that it was not a war in the technical sense of the word. Therefore it may be that there are no relevant records to view on the Forces War Record website. That being the case does anybody have any ideas where  else  I can look for the records. I would be grateful for any assistance.

I have been with Ancestry since about 2008 and have not encountered any problems until now.

For the last few weeks I have been unable to view transcripts of any documents. All 'View' boxes are now very narrow. When I click on them I initially just get a black screen then a dialogue box pops up saying, "Oops, we've hit a snag, we are unable to retrieve the image. Please try again". Needless to say trying again makes no difference. All other aspects of  using the site are fine, just this one irritating issue. I take it that because the problem is obviously recognised by Ancestry themselves and flagged up via one of their own dialogue boxes, the problem is at their end.

All advice appreciated.

Ireland / Records of inquests in Ireland late 1800s.
« on: Thursday 12 January 17 15:31 GMT (UK)  »
I have a general inquiry about how to obtain details of inquests held in Ireland during the late 1800s (between 1888 and 1891 inclusive, to be more precise). Is it a similar process to finding the information for England. I have been trying online to find the details of the inquest in to the death my g. g. grandfather who moved from England to Ireland after 1888. He was apparently killed during an accident on a building site. To avoid repetition/additional complications I don't want to expand on the particulars in this post because I have explored this subject previously on RootsChat. I just want to know if is there an Irish organisation or similar that holds historic information on inquests or is it simply a matter of continuing to trawl through old newspapers. All help would be much appreciated.

The Common Room / Mary Ellen Wilson, born Kirkdale, Liverpool Nov. 1872
« on: Thursday 22 December 16 16:43 GMT (UK)  »
I am hoping that somebody also has 'my' Mary Ellen Wilson in their family tree. I am investigating some new avenues in order to try and  discover more about the demise of my g.g. grandfather Robert Wilson, Mary's father (the link below is one of my previous postings about Robert which will provide some background detail). Mary's mother was Mary Jane Dickinson. Mary's parents were married in the Edge Hill area of Liverpool in 1866. Mary was born in Kirkdale in November of 1872. In August of 1891 she married Samuel Flynn in Leigh Lancashire. In 1901 Mary and Samuel are living at 11 Birch Street(?), in the Lancashire parish of Tyldesley with Shakerley. Their children are Mary, John and Dorise (or possibly Doris). By 1911 the family are living at 2 Mort(?) Street. They have another child, Samuel. In each census entry Mary's middle initial is incorrectly given as 'H', maybe because the middle name has been heard as 'Helen'.

I would be very grateful to anyone who can shed new light on what became of Mary's father. I am hoping that any relative of Mary's who comes across this post might be able to provide some new insights.
