Australia / Louisa COLLINS-Botany Murderess-Have you got Louisa's dress?
« on: Wednesday 29 October 14 09:38 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Everyone,

Louisa Collins from Frogs Hollow in Botany NSW was the last woman to be hanged in NSW at Darlinghurst Gaol in 1889 for the crime of murder of her second husband Michael Peter Collins by arsenic poison. Her first husband Charles Andrews was also poisoned by arsenic shortly before Louisa had married Michael.

My Great-Great Grandmother Ellen Pettit was a witness in the case and was a neighbour of Louisa's. From family history passed down through the generations I understand that Ellen had lent Louisa a black dress (presumably for mourning) and it was this dress that Louisa was wearing when she was arrested.

After Louisa's death, a wax figure of Louisa went on exhibition in a travelling waxworks (Sohier's Waxworks) across Australia in what was known as the "criminals room" along side that of The Kelly Gang and Captain Moonlight and Captain Thunderbolt amongst others.

The last reference to the exhibition that I can find on Trove is on 19th August 1924 see: http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/78436023?searchTerm=%22louisa%20collins%22%20wax&searchLimits=sortby=dateDesc

I have contacted NSW state records and Madame Tussuad's with no luck yet.

Would any one know where the dress is or have any ideas or suggestions where to try?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Rebecca

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone would be able to help me identify the uniform which the man pictured here is wearing. The photograph was taken in 1941. The gentleman was not the groom but is believed to be a relative of the bride.

Thank you

Rebecca

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Request to date an old photograph
« on: Sunday 01 January 12 04:25 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I am trying to find out when this photo would have been taken.

I believe this was taken in Australia but am not 100% sure. It looks as though this photograph was taken at Christmas time as the children are pictured with an around toys. Perhaps the toys along with the clothing the children are dressed in would be good clues.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you
Rebecca

Australia / May ANDREWS - Daughter of Charles ANDREWS & Louisa HALL - NSW
« on: Wednesday 10 November 10 06:00 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I am trying to find out what became of May ANDREWS daughter of Charles ANDREWS and Louisa HALL. May was born in 1877 at Muswellbrook NSW.

During the late 1880's May lived at Botany, NSW -May had given evidence in 1888 at her mothers trial of murder of her two husbands 1. Charles Andrews & 2. Michael Peter Collins.

I have located a newspaper article that states she was adopted by James Geehan and his wife Mary Anne (nee: Maloney) from Windsor, NSW in January 1889 following the execution of her mother (May would then have been 12). This is the last that I know of what happened to May.

James died in 1907(May would have been 20) I thought that he may have left part of his estate to May as he only had one other surviving child at the time and that his will, would have possibly provided me with further details eg. a married surname -  but that was not the case. There was no mention of May in James' will.

I have been unable to locate a marriage or death for May. I have been researching Louisa's trial hence my interest.

Any assistance or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thankyou
Rebecca

Australia / Trying to locate Birth & Death of George son of Bertha Ellen MARTIN
« on: Wednesday 20 October 10 07:28 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I have tried to make my request as short as possible, but for best results need to provide all information.

I am trying to locate details on the birth or death of "George" son of Bertha Ellen HURST (nee Martin). (I do not know the name of Georges father)

Bertha's death certificate in 1960 lists that she had two children in the following order- George (deceased) & Sylvia Bertha Maybelle HURST (my grandmother b. 1923). The informant was Robert Husband. (Sylvia's husband & Berthas son in law).

Bertha Ellen MARTIN was born in Magill, South Australia in 1883. As per electoral roles Bertha was living in Botany, NSW in 1916 and married William James HURST in 1919 in Redfern, NSW when she was 36. (Her marriage certificate lists her as a spinster). There is no mention of George on Sylvia's birth certificate or on Williams death certificate in 1925 in which Bertha was the informant.

I checked SA & NSW BDM indexes and have been unable to locate a birth or death certificate for George son of Bertha. I have searched under both surnames of MARTIN and HURST but it is possible that Bertha had George out of wedlock. Also George could have been born anytime from the late 1800's to 1923.

Unfortunately my Nan is no longer alive so I am unable to ask her what she knew. I know that Sylvia had grown up as an “only child”.

Any assistance or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thankyou
Rebecca

Hi,

I am trying to locate my GG Grandmothers death certificate.

Born Elizabeth Livingston/Livingstone/Levingston approx 1838 in Fermanagh Ireland, she married George Hurst on 25/8/1865 at St Andrews Church Sydney NSW.

Geroge Hurst (Elizabeths Husband) died 1/5/1910 at Turramurra NSW. Georges death certificate however does not list Elizabeth as deceased.

I know that George & Elizabeth had lived at Lane Cove Road Turramura NSW for several years.

Together they had several children including William James Hurst (my Great Grandfather) in 1866 at Frederickton, McLeay River NSW.

William was married 5/4/1919 and his marriage certificate states mother Elizabeth "Livingston" as deceased.

Therefore I assume Elizabeth died somewhere between 1910 & 1919 and would have been approximately 70-80 years old. I have searched NSW BDM index for deaths of Elizabeth Hurst between this period to no avail.

Could someone please assist in how I would be able to locate / purchase this certifiate.

Thank you

Rebecca

Fermanagh / Hurst / Levingston/ Livingston(e)
« on: Friday 22 February 08 10:45 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I was wondering if anyone can help me by provide any information on my GG Grandparents George Hurst & Elizabeth Livingston(e) / Levingston.

George Hurst was born in Fermanangh in approx. 1838. His father was James Hurst and mother was Mabel (unsure of maiden surname).

Elizabeth was also born in Fermanagh, in approx. 1839Livingston(e) - as per their marriage cert (to George Hurst on 25 Aug 1865 @Sydney NSW Australia). / Levingston - as per their son William's birth certificate (4 Jan 1866 @ Macleay River NSW Australia)

I know for certain that George & Elizabeth immigrated to Australia some time before 1865 and believe both James and Mabel (George's parents) also did. I am not sure when this occured or if they came to Australia together aboard the same ship.

Any information / help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Rebecca
