Death was our Bedmate is a new publication by Campbell Thomson & Agnes McEwan about the history and suffering the men of the 155th Lanarkshire Yeomanry suffered as Japanese POW's during WW2. Featured in the April edition of WDYTYA magazine this book is a must read.
Campbell will be giving a talk at the book launch in April at the Lanarkshire Family History Society's monthly speakers evening on Thursday 11th April 2013 at 7pm. Glo Centre Muir Street Motherwell.
Its free for all to attend.

Scotland / Petition to keep the Scottish Catholic Archives in Edinburgh

HI All,
Currently the Catholic Records for Scotland are housed in Drummond Street Edinburgh with the Archivists looking after them and free public access to anyone. They are under threat of being dispersed to the various diocese, which is a major threat to both the public access and the upkeep.

Midlothian / Headstone Photograph - Dean Cemetery

Hi Al,
I'm hoping some kind rootschatter can help me, I'm working on a publication of Local men who fell during WW1, and am looking for a photo of a headstone in Dean Cemetery Edinburgh.
Its  the family headstone of Thomas Greenshileds Leadbetter, who's son Edmond is one of these brave men who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Lanarkshire / 1911 Avondale Census

The 1911 Avondale Census has been published in 2 volumes by local Strathaven man J Fleming.
If interested in a copy its available from the Computer shop in Strathaven.
Vol 2 has some real interesting items about what was happening and some key figures of the parish at the time. Cost for both Vols is £16

Lanarkshire / NLC Archives temporary closure

The North Lanarkshire Council Archives currently based at Lenziemill in Cumbernauld are moving to the Heritage Centre building in Motherwell as part of efficiency savings by NLC.
As as result of this the Archives operation will be effected as follows -
Search room: From Thursday, 1st December 2011 we will only be able to accommodate visits regarding burial and poor law records.
From Monday, 19th December 2011 the search room will be closed until the opening of our new facility scheduled for the beginning of April 2012.
 
External enquiries:From Thursday, 1st December 2011 we will only be able to answer burial and poor law enquiries.
From Monday, 19th December 2011 we will not be able to answer any external enquiries until the opening of our new facility scheduled for April 2012.

Lanarkshire family History Society have newly published the MI's for this churchyard and the new side cemetery. They also have it available on disc format which includes photographs of the headstones.

Lanarkshire / Anyone related to a Lance Corporal Donald Simpson

I have a request for any information regarding a Private or Lance Corporal Donald Simpson. He served with the 5th battalion, Cameron Highlanders during WW1 and his service number was S-18621. He is the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Margaret (nee Graham) Simpson and was killed in France on the 18th October 1916 aged 29 years. I believe his parents lived at 32 Motherwell St, Airdrie at the time. If I have the correct mother she was born in Airdrie on the 10th August 1849 and died on the 9th July 1925.

Donald is mentioned on the family headstone in New Monkland's Cemetery, Airdrie.

It is possible that his relations uprooted and moved to Australia.
