World War One / Another Uniform Puzzle
« on: Saturday 14 November 20 21:56 GMT (UK)  »
To my knowledge I have two relatives who served in WW1. One joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force. In 1916 he was posted to France with 2nd Battalion, Canadian Victoria Rifles and was killed in action in July 1917. The second joined the Royal Ordnance Corps and worked in the ROC workshops in France. At some point he was invalided out, having been injured in a gas attack. I have been given the attached photograph and been told it is one of the above. I'm not sure. Sorry the cap badge is not very clear or is it just a prop for the photo ?

The Lighter Side / Pub Quiz
« on: Monday 20 July 20 14:18 BST (UK)  »
"Does anyone know the location of this pub/ex-pub? Ashby's was a Staines brewery"
Is a question being asked on another forum and I know it's the type of mystery the Sherlocks on this site might like.
There are lots of pub/brewery sites on 'tinternet but I'm thinking a genealogy mindset could be applied.

It's been suggested the lady sitting on the right in this photograph is my gg grandmother born in Ireland c.1839 and died sometime after 1911. The other two females are daughters born either 1862/75/82 and a son born 1871/73/75/76/80/84. The lady is dressed in black which suggests to me she is in mourning. Her husband died in 1896. He was a head constable and later land agent for Lord Tottenham in Ireland. My query is does the fashion match the time and place.

The Common Room / BOWLES family mystery. Canal Boatman ?
« on: Sunday 19 March 17 18:18 GMT (UK)  »
Looking for a mystery husband. ???

Ann Lydia HALLFORD born Paddington 1879 was from a canal boat family.

In 1901 census Annie was on a barge named "Diamond" with her parents George and Priscilla in Yiewsley Uxbridge.

In 1909 her father died and she married John Ambrose PEARCE. Both living in Horton Road, Yiewsley,Uxbridge in Rutters Cottage and Ivy Cottage.

The mystery is on their marriage certificate she is named Ann Lydia BOWLES (widow) father George HALLFORD boatman.

I can find no trace of any marriage between 1901-1909 or earlier between ? BOWLES and Ann Lydia HALLFORD. ( Many variations due to family illiteracy HOLFORD,ALFORD,ALCOME ? etc) :o

I don't know if John Ambrose PEARCE was a boatman but his father was a Market Garden Labourer.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Y not ?
« on: Friday 28 October 16 03:49 BST (UK)  »
The mystery; 1871 English census. Two boys Arthur and Ernest Robins age 6 and 4 years old listed as "boarders". That is the earliest record I have found in over ten years of searching.
The question; Are the boys full or half brothers ? ie. should I be searching for one or two fathers ?
The solution; YDNA ?
I'm a direct male descendant of Arthur Robins. I've found my 2nd cousin once removed, a direct male descendant of Ernest Robins. I persuaded my cousin to take a YDNA test to 67 markers ( I've already taken tests mtDNA,111 markers,Big Y etc.)
My theory; If YDNA only passes down the male line then if Arthur and Ernest had the same father then our YDNA should match. If they had different fathers we wouldn't see a match.
I have the results but before I say what they are is my theory correct ? ???

His second marriage was to Mary Maguire/McGuire in 1869 at Manorhamilton. Now I have to find his first marriage  dated 28/7/1853 to an unknown woman from Monaghan somewhere in Ireland .One clue due to my his job , he attended many court sessions in Castleblaney.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Edinburgh address
« on: Wednesday 17 June 15 19:20 BST (UK)  »
Hello folks,
This photograph has the photographers name and address as Lees 131 Lowthian Road Edinburgh. Thanks to Google I found an excellent site which tells me Lee had a studio at 131 Lothian Road for one year in 1915. So is it just a typo, a coincidence  or an earlier spelling of the street name?
Does the clothing suggest 1915 or earlier ?
