Durham / Elusive Mary Ellen born 10 September in Gateshead.
« on: Tuesday 21 September 21 20:50 BST (UK)  »
I have been trying to find Mary Ellen Mallachin/ Johnson since I found her with my grandfather, their mother, step father and stepbrother on the 1911 Census.
I had not known anything about my grandfather until 1911 census was published. I had been told (by his only living child that he was born 9 June 1900 but found out that the year was actually 1899 and he was born in Gateshead workhouse as per birth certificate. His sister was born 10 September 1901 as on her baptism record but I have never found a birth registration for her. On baptism record she is Maria Helena Mallachin daughter of Margaretha Mallachin. Presumably RC.
Her mother married a Charles Johnson in 1904 but he died a few months after. Both children were then known as Johnson.  Their mother then married a Thomas Coyne in South Shields begore moving to Blyth.
Mary Ellen only appeared on 1911 census and then on my grandparents marriage certificate and nowhere else after. I have kept going back to her and now have found her via marriage record but I wonder if it was normal for children not to have birth registered or is it just an oversight somewhere in the system.

Thanks in advance.
Emma.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Hansen siblings from Blyth
« on: Monday 20 September 21 17:01 BST (UK)  »
I was wondering if anyone could help date the boy in the attached photo. The girls are his sisters and the one on the left was born in 1903 and the elder one (my grandma) was born in 1897. I originally thought it was one brother born 1895 before I learned of the younger brother born 1901. Hopefully I can amend my tree and make sure it is correct.

Northumberland Lookup Requests / William Hansen b1902 Blyth
« on: Wednesday 14 November 18 13:21 GMT (UK)  »
The above was one of my grandmothers brothers. I have a photo of him in army uniform (had thought WW1). found hid army records and he enrolled on 13.03.1920 but was consequently deemed to be unfit for service 26.11.20 length of service 26 days. Looking at his medical report it states his disability dated (ear problems) August 1918 mercantile service and place of origin of disability Mediterranean Sea.
This has got the brain cells going as just a few weeks ago my cousin asked about one of the brothers who was in the merch navy and went to join his first ship but wasn't full crew and was sent home. The ship did sail but was sunk. Also another relative had a story very similar to this (told second or third hand). how would I be able to find out about his Merchant navy service?

Thanks.

Northumberland Lookup Requests / Newspaper lookup for Cecil Noble of Blyth
« on: Wednesday 06 July 16 18:54 BST (UK)  »
I was just wondering if anyone who has access to newspaper reports could do a lookup for me.
The name is Cecil Noble who was born in Blyth in 1916. The ship S.S. Waterland hit a mine off Dover on 10 March 1941 and he was one of the seven crew killed. I have seen the war grave entry and a photo of where the monument is in Tower Hamlets, London but was wondering if there were any local newspaper reports.  Also where would hid death be registered as I cannot find it. thanks, Barbara.

London and Middlesex / Mallichan surname
« on: Friday 20 June 14 21:00 BST (UK)  »
I have been looking into my family tree on my grandfathers line.  He was called Charles Johnson to us but I eventually found his birth under Mallichan via 1911 census.  He was born in Gateshead workhouse to Margaret Mallichan from Edinburgh. She then had a daughter (Mary Ellen) who apart from 1911 census and a baptism record on FS.  Maria Helena (guess catholic.)

I have (with help from Rootchat) traced the family in Edinburgh up to 1901 census but the hit the wall again. Like a dog with a bone I have kept gnawing and have found some Mallichans in london electoral rolls.

I would be eternally grateful for any help with this family as there was nothing known about this family.

Thanks in advance
Barbara.

Durham / Mary Ellen Mallichan (various spellings)
« on: Tuesday 06 May 14 21:43 BST (UK)  »
Not sure if this is the correct board to post.

I am looking for information about the above.  She was the sister of my grandfather.

It took a long time to find grandad due to the fact that to us he was Charles Johnson b 1900 but when 1911 census came out I found his mother was born Margaret Mallachin from Edinburgh.  I searched FBMD and found him born Charles Mallichan 1899 in Gateshead workhouse.

His sister Mary Ellen on 1911 census also has her born in Gateshead but I have not found birth record for her under either surname.

A couple of months ago I found a baptism record on FS for a Maria Helena born 1901 Gateshead with mother Margarethe. I think this is her but have no solid proof unless I find a birth record.

Is it possible that this record has been missed?  How can I move on as I know nothing about her after 1911 census.

Barbara. ??? ??? ???
